OpenAI prepares Apple Health integration for ChatGPT app
OpenAI is preparing a new Apple Health integration for the ChatGPT iOS app, according to newly discovered code in the latest version. The feature is not active yet, but internal assets and strings clearly point to planned support for syncing health data like steps, sleep and nutrition.
A hidden connector inside the app
Digging into the latest version of the ChatGPT app for iPhone has revealed references to a new connector labeled “Apple Health.” The code analysis shows both a specific icon and internal strings tied to health-related data categories. This isn’t just a generic placeholder or speculative file name. It shows up in the same settings structure used for existing integrations like Google Drive and Slack, under the “Apps & Connectors” menu.
That suggests OpenAI plans to handle Apple Health access in a similar way, likely allowing users to link their data directly to ChatGPT via iOS’s built-in privacy permissions. This would move the app a step closer to acting as a contextual health assistant rather than just a text-based tool.
Data categories being considered
The code doesn’t suggest OpenAI will get blanket access to everything in your Health app. Instead, it seems designed to request user permission for individual categories. The strings mention five specific areas: activity, sleep, diet, breathing and hearing. These are some of the most commonly logged types of data in Apple Health, and they make sense as first-wave options.
This would allow ChatGPT to respond to your queries with much more personal context. Rather than asking how you slept or what your step count was, it could already know. That opens the door to more proactive coaching prompts and targeted feedback based on your actual behavior and recent history.
A more contextual experience
If this integration goes live, it could turn ChatGPT into something closer to a lightweight, conversational health assistant. It wouldn’t replace a fitness platform like Garmin Connect or Apple Fitness+, but it could fill in the gaps for casual users who want quick suggestions and insights without switching apps.
For example, if your step count is unusually low and your sleep was restless, ChatGPT could suggest adjusting your workout plan or bedtime routine. If you’re logging calories and hydration, it might flag under-fueling after a long run. All of this depends on having the right permissions, of course. And on whether OpenAI actually launches this feature publicly.
Nothing official yet
At the moment, the Apple Health integration is not live. The files are buried in the code, and the feature itself is disabled in the interface. This type of placeholder isn’t unusual. Companies often test and stage integrations well before making them public, and many never reach release.
OpenAI has not commented on the discovery, nor has Apple. But given how central health data has become in the iOS ecosystem, it wouldn’t be surprising to see ChatGPT follow the same path as apps like Strava, MyFitnessPal and others that now support granular HealthKit access.
Until then, this remains an opt-in-only scenario. If it does arrive, expect the usual iOS privacy screens asking for permission by category. Apple’s health privacy system is strict, and users have full control over what gets shared and when.
