Zepp OS 6 finally shows where Amazfit watches are heading next

Zepp OS 6 has finally stepped out of the shadows. The new operating system debuted on the Amazfit Balance 3 and Balance Ultra, and we now have a much clearer idea of what it adds beyond the new hardware.

More context for recovery

Recovery stats are getting more context, although some of this is not exclusive to Zepp OS 6. HybridCharge, for example, is also rolling out to watches running Zepp OS 5.

HybridCharge builds on BioCharge and adds LifeLoad, which lets users log stress, illness, alcohol, physical strain, travel and jet lag. Zepp OS 6 also adds RPE logging, so users can record how hard a workout felt once it is done.

Boundary reminders can appear before or during workouts when HybridCharge is low or when the watch thinks the user is close to a daily limit. That makes recovery less of a static morning score and more of something that can guide training choices during the day.

Better training and navigation tools

Zepp OS 6 adds Training Calendar, so planned workouts and past sessions can sit in one place, with support for Zepp Training, custom templates and third-party training plans. There is also a Training Library, with Zepp Training courses available directly on the watch.

HYROX gets proper support, with training templates and Virtual Pace. These include stage guidance, target progress and next-up previews, which fits the Balance 3 range’s stronger focus on hybrid fitness.

Hybrid Training modes are also included, with AMRAP, TABATA and EMOM. Running gets grade-adjusted pace, lactate threshold estimates and lactate threshold-based heart rate zones.

Zepp OS 6 also adds Recovery Time Update, with clearer cues on whether to keep things easy, return to moderate effort or resume harder sessions. Gear Management is included too, so users can track mileage on shoes and bikes and get reminders when equipment may need checking or replacing.

Beyond that, navigation has also been improved. Route Progress can show remaining distance, ascent and descent to the next waypoint and final destination, while Elevation Chart gives a clearer view of the route profile ahead.

The Launcher gets a rethink

The most visible everyday change, though, may be the new Launcher. Zepp Health has reworked it around the watch face, with swipe right opening workouts, swipe left opening apps, swipe down opening notifications and controls and swipe up opening Shortcut Cards.

That is partly about consistency. Zepp Health says different Amazfit watch lines had developed different Launcher structures over time, so Zepp OS 6 brings the core navigation model closer together across devices.

The new layout also gives physical buttons a bigger role. That makes sense for workouts, where touch controls can be awkward because of sweat, rain, gloves or movement.

Shortcut Cards now become the main home for quick information. Zepp Health says horizontal widgets and Shortcut Cards had started to overlap, so Zepp OS 6 moves that glanceable content into the vertical space below the watch face.

A clearer direction for Amazfit watches

The main question now is rollout. Zepp Health lists Balance 3 and Balance Ultra for Zepp OS 6 at the moment, but it also says more devices and features will be added through future software updates.

Interestingly, some of the listed features are already appearing on watches running Zepp OS 5, so this is not a clean split between old and new software. HybridCharge and lactate threshold are examples. That makes the upgrade picture a bit less straightforward, because older watches may get selected tools without moving fully to Zepp OS 6.
