Garmin watches get official Google Maps integration but Android only

Just as predicted by recent leaks, Garmin has now made Google Maps available through the Connect IQ store. The catch is that, for now, it only works for Android users.

Google Maps arrives but with Android-only support

The addition of Google Maps to Garmin’s ecosystem has been a long time coming. While the brand has leaned on its own mapping engine for years, it was never the best option in cities or urban environments. Google’s superior point-of-interest data makes it more convenient when walking, running or cycling through crowded streets. Garmin’s built-in maps, in contrast, tend to shine in remote areas, where topography and trails matter more than coffee shops and post offices.

That said, this is not a full onboard mapping app. It works by syncing directions from your Android phone. You install the Connect IQ Google Maps app, authenticate it, and then whenever you set a destination on your phone, your Garmin watch will mirror the turn-by-turn directions. You get vibration alerts for each step, so the phone can stay in your pocket the entire time. There’s no full visual map on the watch face, just simplified directions and an overview of what’s coming next.

iPhone users are out of luck for now

Unlike most app rollouts where iOS gets early support, this one is different. iPhone users cannot access this feature, even if they own the latest Fenix 8, Forerunner 965, or Venu X1. The feature works exclusively via Android’s APIs and Google’s own restrictions, so there’s no workaround unless Garmin and Google find a way to open it up in future.

This is unfortunate because many Garmin users use iPhones. It’s unclear if this is a technical limitation or simply a matter of prioritisation, but as of now, the limitation is there.

How to download

Google Maps isn’t just any app – it’s one of the most widely used navigation platforms globally. Seeing it land on Connect IQ is excellent news. Also made available today is Google Health Connect direct sync with Garmin Connect.

The app is available now through the Connect IQ store. Compatible models include most recent editions across the Fenix, Epix, Forerunner, Enduro, Venu, Vivoactive and Tactix lines. You’ll need to be on Android, of course, and have the Google Maps app on your phone to initiate directions.
