Suunto Race 2 leak confirms thinner build & ZoneSense recovery

Suunto’s Race 2 has broken cover a bit earlier than expected. A major retailer briefly published a product listing complete with high-resolution images, specifications, and a September 1 availability date.

A familiar shape with subtle improvements

At first glance, the Race 2 doesn’t try to reinvent anything. The watch keeps the 49mm diameter of the original but trims thickness to 12.5mm. It also comes in lighter depending on the material. The composite version weighs 65 grams, stainless steel sits at 76 grams, and there’s mention of a titanium model as well. Colours shown include black and light grey.

The overall design sticks with the established Race formula but looks more refined. The side buttons and crown layout remain intact, though the buttons now appear slightly more integrated into the casing. The charging system switches to a snap-in connector, and the rear sensor layout is more compact.

From the front, the high-contrast AMOLED display stands out. The product copy specifically highlights its clarity, especially in demanding outdoor conditions. It is not yet clear whether the size of the display will be bumped up from the 1.43 inches of the current version.

What’s new inside

The listing confirms dual-band GPS with multi-satellite support and quotes up to 50 hours of runtime with GPS enabled. Smartwatch mode is listed at 12 days. There are now over 115 sport modes including trail running, swimming, cycling, and skiing.

The watch comes with ClimbGuidance, ZoneSense recovery tracking and a feature called Suunto Coach. Ghost racing is also part of the package. Voice feedback during workouts is supported too, as long as you’re using Suunto Wing headphones.

Navigation and outdoor tools are unchanged for the most part. The Race 2 retains the compass, weather alerts, sunrise/sunset data, and heatmaps. Hydration reminders and customisable data fields are also listed.

The heart rate sensor has been upgraded. This is expected, given the Race 2 was already known to feature a new optical module with a flatter profile. The Ambiq Apollo 510 chip mentioned in earlier filings likely powers the improved performance.

Price bump, but not extreme

The titanium model is listed at €599. Based on past pricing tiers, the stainless steel version should land around €499. That’s a roughly €100 jump compared to the original Race, which has recently been selling closer to €299 during promotions.

That price bump could raise eyebrows. On paper, the Race 2 brings a thinner chassis, a better heart rate sensor, and the new ZoneSense recovery system. Otherwise, many features remain the same. Offline music support hasn’t been confirmed, though real-time voice cues hint at audio integration. Of course, there could be further additions that have not been mentioned in this retailer leak.
