Amazfit T-Rex 3 gets a massive software overhaul with Zepp OS 5

The Amazfit T-Rex 3 is finally receiving its major upgrade to Zepp OS 5, bringing a completely refreshed interface and support for Stryd power meters. This firmware version 4.1.5.1 has started rolling out now and includes over a dozen specific improvements that range from niche sport modes to better sleep management.

A smoother interface and visuals

The headline change here is the shift to Zepp OS 5. This is not just a version number bump. It brings a new visual system with upgraded animations and a more interactive interface. If you have felt the previous system was a bit rigid, this should feel much more fluid under the finger.

The update also addresses a common complaint regarding readability. You can now adjust the system font size directly in the settings. This is a small tweak that makes a huge difference when you are trying to read notifications on a moving wrist.

New energy metrics and sleep tools

The watch is also finally getting the BioCharge score. This completely replaces the previous Recovery Metric. Already available on a number of devices, it mimics what you get on Garmin’s Body Battery. So something that replenishes when you get rest and falls when you exert yourself. It aims to give you a single metric to understand your current energy levels based on your recovery and activity.

Sleep tracking also gets more flexible. You can now delete and edit nap records. This is vital for those of us who get false positives when watching a movie or sitting still for too long.

The one-click measurement app has also been upgraded. It now supports multiple consecutive measurements and can even run during sleep, providing a better picture of your overnight health data.

Training upgrades

For the runners and hikers, this update adds significant utility. Stryd pod support is here. After binding the pod, you can use it for professional running data in your running and walking activities.

The T-Rex 3 is also leaning harder into its rugged persona with new sport modes. Rucking and mountain climbing are now distinct activities. We actually spotted both of these in the app code about a month ago, so knew they were arriving.

Rucking supports recording the weight you are carrying. This is excellent for anyone training for a heavy pack expedition. You can also add weight settings to trail running and outdoor hiking. This ensures your calorie burn and intensity metrics actually reflect the extra load you are hauling up the hill.

Navigation capabilities have been expanded to more sports. You can now use terrain map pages and route navigation for driving, kitesurfing, and skydiving. The route navigation itself is smarter. It now includes uphill reminders to help you track incline changes.

Best of the rest

The change log is quite extensive. Another worthy addition listed there is a new screenshot function that allows you to capture the screen by pressing the SEL and DOWN buttons. This is automatically saved to your phone. The notification center now allows you to zoom in on images, though this is currently limited to Android phones. And finally, travellers will appreciate the new time zone manager.
