Google confirms Pixel Watch battery drain bug as owners wait for a fix

If your Pixel Watch has suddenly started dying before dinner, it may not be the battery getting old. Google has now confirmed a battery drain problem and says a fix is on the way.

The issue appears to affect several generations of the watch, with owners reporting sharp drops in battery life over the past few days. Some watches that previously lasted between 24 and 48 hours are now struggling to make it beyond 12 hours.

Google says a fix is coming

Google acknowledged the problem through its PixelCommunity account on Reddit. The company says it is aware of a battery drain issue affecting a small number of Pixel Watch users and is working to roll out a fix as soon as possible.

That is all the company has confirmed for now. There is no explanation on what caused the drain in the first place and no expected date for the update.

Owner reports mention all generations of the Pixel Watch. Which points towards software rather than ageing batteries.

The timing makes a recent software or background service change an obvious suspect. Google rolled out a substantial Pixel Watch 5 update in September, while the Google Health platform has also been changing as features such as Health Guardian reached Pixel Watch owners.

There is no reliable workaround yet

Owners have already tried the usual fixes, but nothing appears to work consistently. Restarting the watch and turning off the always-on display have helped in some cases, while others say the battery continues dropping quickly even when the watch is sitting idle.

A clean factory reset has reportedly restored normal battery life for a few people, but it has not worked for everyone. With Google already preparing a fix, wiping the watch and setting it up again feels like a lot of effort for something that may return.

For now, the safer option is to restart the watch, install any pending updates and use Battery Saver if the drain becomes difficult to manage. Google’s official battery guidance also suggests reducing screen use, limiting background activity and switching LTE models to automatic or off when a cellular connection is not needed.

This is not the first software problem to disrupt health or everyday use on Google’s watches. Earlier this year, a Pixel Watch 3 and 4 update interrupted SpO2 and skin temperature data, showing how a relatively small software change can affect the features people rely on overnight.

Google says only a small number of users are affected, and plenty of owners are still seeing normal battery life. But for anyone whose watch has abruptly gone from lasting all day to needing two charges, at least there is now confirmation that the problem is real and a fix is being prepared.
