This is Xiaomi’s second smartwatch. It follows from Mi Watch which was announced at the end of October and made available for purchase in China shortly after. The few reviews that have been posted so far suggest this is a fairly decent device. Mi Watch looks like an Apple Watch but runs on a customized version of Wear OS. It has support for eSIM cards, 4G LTE, NFC for payments on the go, GPS, a voice assistant and plethora of fitness sensors.
But now we have the arrival of Mi Watch Color and this one looks nothing like the Apple Watch. As shown in these images, it is more akin to the Amazfit GTR. To remind, Amazfit-branded watches are manufactured by Chinese-based Huami. This is the same company that manufactures Xiaomi’s Mi Band.
The cheerful looking, circular timepiece looks to be targeted towards younger buyers and fashionistas rather than hard-core fitness geeks. Xiaomi says there are 1,540 different customization combinations to choose from via 110 different personalized dials, 2 different color bezels and 7 different color straps. The quick-release strap should make it easy to switch between bands.
The 47mm variant of the watch has a 1.39-inch circular display with 454 x 454 pixels screen resolution, protected with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and a small stainless-steel bezel. The thing has the usual fitness tracking sensors including an accelerometer, barometer and heart rate. There’s also support for 9 Firstbeat metrics including: Vo2Max, Training Effect: Aerobic, Recovery Time Adviser, Calories Burned, All day stress, Body Resources, Sleep Detection, Sleep Analysis and Sleep Coach.
Battery life is said to be an excellent 14 days in normal smartwatch mode. This climbs up to 22 days in basic mode, and falls to 22 hours with GPS switched on.

According to Xiaomi Ecological Chain, Qu Heng, the watch aims to fill the gap between fitness bands and fully fledged smartwatches. He actually refers to a new category of “long battery life smartwatches”, i.e. wearables that you don’t need to worry about charging too often, and that can be utilized for fitness tracking and every-day use. Qu Heng says a true smartwatch should have a built-in eSIM so that it can function independently from a smartphone.
Mi Watch Color is available for purchase in China from today for CNY 799 (around $115). The timepiece is currently not compatible with iOS.
Some two months since its reveal, we are still waiting for Mi Watch to make its way across the Chinese border. Let’s hope the international release of Xiaomi’s second smartwatch does not take as long.
