Garmin Connect IQ Store now accepts payments, premium apps launch

Garmin has announced the addition of paid apps and watch faces to its Connect IQ Store. This move marks a transition from the store’s previous model of offering exclusively free content, although some software required payments through third-party platforms to unlock certain features.

As detailed in a press release, the introduction of premium content brings several notable brands to the Garmin ecosystem. Disney fans can now purchase watch faces featuring iconic characters such as Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Grogu from “The Mandalorian,” and Tony Stark from the Marvel universe.

For those with other interests, Porsche has released three watch faces showcasing their wordmark, crest, and the classic 917 Salzburg livery design. Golf lovers can display their passion with a TaylorMade watch face inspired by the dimple pattern of a TP5 golf ball.

Garmin paid apps

Beyond branded watch faces, Garmin has also introduced new functionality through paid apps. One of the early additions is the GoPro Camera Control app. It allows users to remotely operate their GoPro cameras directly from their Garmin smartwatch. You can start and stoprecordings and capture still images.

For those interested in space exploration, Garmin offers a collection of NASA-inspired watch faces. These designs feature images from the James Webb telescope and pay homage to the Apollo missions.

Pricing, reasons for launch

This update to the Connect IQ Store represents a new direction for Garmin. It brings the platform closer to the likes of the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Pricing for these new premium offerings starts at $4.99, with some variation depending on the region.

Of course, content that was previously free will remain free. This just introduces a paid tier that works through Garmin Pay.

The idea is to allow third-party developers to be rewarded for their efforts and incentivise them to create more. While some users may be hesitant to pay for watch faces and apps, this move by Garmin could lead to a wider range of high-quality options in the Connect IQ Store in the future.
