IFA 2024 | Amazfit T-Rex 3 – bigger screen, better features

Following a flurry of teasers yesterday on various social media platforms, Zepp Health has made official its latest creation – the Amazfit T-Rex 3. This device really takes things up a notch for the brand. So let’s dive in to see what’s new.

The gizmo was presented at an event this morning. We received an invite and were looking forward to learning all the nitty gritty about the timepiece. To remind, like last year, Zepp Health is not attending IFA in Berlin. But it organised its gathering on the opening day of Europe’s largest tech show, a mere 5 minute walk from its venue.

Amazfit T-Rex 3: A much better looking watch

The T-Rex 3 is a continuation of the popular Amazfit adventurer watch series. However it has undergone a redesign.

Instead of a round, it now adopts a octagonal shape. On-board is a larger 480 x 480 pixel 1.5 inch AMOLED screen (versus 1.39 on T-Rex Ultra), that is also brighter than before – up to 2000 nits. This allows for a night display where your data is illuminated in bright red, green, or orange. As well as an innovative Glove Mode where your display stays responsive to touch even when you’re wearing gloves! Nice.

We actually picked up a press sample at the presentation this morning. And the screen definitely is one of the highlights of the device. It is incredibly sharp and clear.

Mind you, this is still a masculine watch. It measures 48.5 x 48.5 x 13.75 mm and weighs more than 60 grams. You do need some heft for an outdoorsy watch. But it may not be to everyone’s liking.

As you would expect T-Rex 3 comes with military-grade durability and 10 ATM water resistance. Also on-board is a certification of durability for diving down to 45 meters.

Zepp Health: The complete gamut of features

In terms of features, you get a device running on Zepp OS 4 out of the box. Coupled with that is integration with AI, a richer app ecosystem and offline storage for music (32GB). Zepp Health says it has enhanced privacy options for location data and fitness tracking, which sounds useful.

The fitness and health functionality is ported over from other Amazfit devices, but you now also get skin temperature measurements. The 170 workout modes should cover most of the sports out there, including Hyrox Race and freediving. There is multi-band GPS (6 satellites) and third party device support.

Another area where this device shines is in battery life. Thanks to a massive 700 mAH battery, you can expect up to 27 days of typical use on a single charge. And up to 180 hours of continuous GPS tracking. This should come in handy when using those free offline maps, turn directions, and other forms of navigation.

The brains behind everything come in the form of a new ZPS3044 processor. This is supported by 64MB of RAM.

All things considered the timepiece is a nice upgrade for the Amazfit T-Rex series. Its predecessors include T-Rex, T-Rex Pro, T-Rex 2, and T-Rex Ultra. The new device costs €299 in Europe and $299 in the US. You can pick it up on the company’s website starting today in Onyx and Lava options.

As mentioned, I will be testing out the sample in the coming days. So keep an eye out for my review to land in the near future.
