Garmin brings Strength Coach to Forerunner lineup

Garmin is expanding its Strength Coach feature to several popular Forerunner models through the latest beta firmware update 21.18.

The feature, which was previously exclusive to the Fenix 8 series, Enduro 3, and Fenix E watches launched last September, is now making its way to the Forerunner 955, 965, 265, and 255. These devices were previously limited to running and cycling plans.

The Strength Coach feature offers users three distinct training pathways:

  • Athletes focusing on pure strength can opt for the Increase Max Strength program, which emphasizes low repetitions with heavy weights and extended rest periods.
  • Those seeking muscle growth can select the Build Muscle Mass option, incorporating moderate weights with higher repetition ranges and balanced rest intervals.
  • For looking to improve general fitness, the Get Fit program provides varied weekly exercises using lighter weights, higher repetitions, and shorter rest periods.

Users can customize their experience based on their available equipment, choosing between full gym access or dumbbell-only workouts. After selecting their preferences, they receive personalized training plans typically spanning 4-6 weeks.

The beta firmware update also addresses several technical issues. Users will find fixes for weather glance navigation, sleep mode behavior, and correct activity profile display for triathlon configurations.

Here are all the changes:

  • Adds compatibility for Garmin Coach strength training plans. –
  • Fixed an issue where device would return to previous page when browsing weather glance.
  • Fixed an issue where sleep mode would resume after user manually exited sleep mode.
  • Fixed an issue where triathlon activity profile copies were showing as run profiles.

While the Forerunner 165 is not included in this update, the expansion of Strength Coach to mid and high-range Forerunners is welcome. Notably, the Forerunner series is receiving this update ahead of the Fenix 7 and Epix range, though these models will likely receive the feature in a forthcoming firmware release.
