Oppo Watch S brings a slim design and ECG
Oppo has officially unveiled the Watch S today, and it is one of the thinnest full-featured smartwatches around. It comes with ECG, a bright AMOLED display and up to ten days of battery life.
Slim build, bright display and daily durability
The Oppo Watch S measures only 8.9 millimetres thick. But it still manages to feel solid, with 5 ATM water resistance, an IP68 rating for extra reassurance and military-grade durability.
The case is 45 millimetres across and houses a 1.46-inch AMOLED screen. It pushes a peak brightness of 3,000 nits in supported sports modes, which should make it readable in full sun. For everything else, Oppo limits brightness to 1,500 nits to help manage battery life. The display also offers a 464 x 464 resolution, making it crisp enough for small text and rich graphics.
Weight is a mere 35 grams. So the watch should wear comfortably throughout the day and night.
ECG analysis and flagship sensors
Health tracking is central to this timepiece. The Watch S includes an ECG sensor (rated as a Class II medical device in China), with software that offers real-time prompts. Users can expect analysis of sinus rhythm, detection of atrial fibrillation and alerts for premature beats.
The sensor package is described as flagship grade. It supports 24-hour heart rate monitoring, and with the addition of skin temperature, the watch could be a good candidate for sleep insights and stress analysis as well. There’s also a 16-channel blood oxygen sensor onboard along the 8-channel heart rate sensor.
For those using the watch during workouts, Oppo has included dual-frequency GPS. That’s a helpful upgrade over single-band systems, especially in areas where signal reflections might be an issue. Whether it lives up to expectations will depend on testing, but the feature places the Watch S in the same league as some higher-end fitness watches. There is compatibility for BeiDou, Galileo, GLONASS and QZSS.
The company calls the device, the first AI sports coach. It is capable of spitting out exercise plans and real-time guidance during runs. All of this is based on your physiological metrics, like HRV during sleep and your last seven days of workouts.
Cross-platform support with added perks
The Watch S supports connection with both Android and iOS devices. Oppo even claims it can stay connected to both systems at the same time, though the real-world benefit of that remains to be seen. But this is not a WearOS watch. It runs on ColorOS Watch 7.1 with 4GB of eMMC storage.
The inclusion of a native WeChat app makes the watch more useful as a standalone communication tool. Users can read messages, reply, and check updates directly from the wrist, without needing to pull out their phone. Plus there is support for AliPay and Xiaobu Assistant.
Battery life is rated at up to ten days in energy-saving mode. With more typical use and the always-on display active, Oppo says users can expect around four days of runtime. That’s a solid performance for a device with a large AMOLED screen and a thin profile. A full charge takes an hour and a half, while a 10 minute top-up gives you enough juice for 24 hours.
The Oppo Watch S should be available in China for CNY 1,499 (around $200). Global availability details are yet to be confirmed. Colour options available include Vibrant Green, Rhythmic Silver and Racing Black with stainless steel cases and fluororubber or woven straps.
