Microsoft is an American multinational corporation headquartered in Redmond, Washington. Microsoft develops and licenses various technology products including computer software, consumer electronics, mobile devices, and personal computers. The company was founded by Paul Allen and Bill Gates to develop and sell BASIC interpreters for Altair 8800. It rose to dominate the personal computer operating system market with MS-DOS in the mid-1980s, followed by Microsoft Windows. Microsoft entered the wearables arena in 2014 with the release of its Microsoft Band smartband, as well as the launch of its Microsoft Health fitness data aggregation platform. It has, in the past few years, retreated from the wearables space.
