Garmin has launched the Bounce 2, a kids’ smartwatch with LTE, music playback and real-time tracking. Like its predecessor, the device is designed to help parents delay giving their child a phone while staying connected.

Built for everyday use

The Bounce 2 features a vivid 1.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen and is swim-ready. The news here is that this is Garmin’s first kids’ watch to include an AMOLED display. This should help to improve clarity for both apps and activity tracking.

The interface is designed to be responsive and easy to navigate, using both the touchscreen and side buttons. It’s also built with enough durability to handle everyday bumps, splashes and rough handling. Just what you want from a kids watch.

Garmin is positioning the Bounce 2 as a step between simple GPS trackers and giving a child a full smartphone. It supports two-way calling and voice messaging. Kids can also send texts using a full on-screen keyboard. Voice messages can be automatically transcribed if listening isn’t an option.

What’s more, parents can view their child’s location in real time and set up safe zones. A new geofencing feature sends alerts when those zones are entered or exited, and can be set to expire automatically.

Music and voice features keep it fun

Kids can download Amazon Music playlists directly to the watch for phone-free listening, provided there’s a subscription in place. Simple voice commands like “call mum” or “set a timer” are also supported, letting kids interact with the device without needing to swipe through menus. Watch faces and colour themes can be customised with animated styles to keep the experience light and playful.

Essential reading: Top fitness trackers and health gadgets

Activity tracking is built in too. The watch supports sports modes including running, biking, jump rope and even pickleball. Activity summaries are sent to Garmin Connect so parents can keep track of their child’s movement history and basic health data.

The battery lasts up to two days depending on usage, and the LTE plan is managed entirely through Garmin. It costs $9.99 per month, removing the need to set up a separate mobile account.

The Bounce 2 is available in three colour options: light purple, turquoise, and slate gray. It retails for $299.99 on Garmin’s website.

Fitbit has unveiled, today, the Ace LTE. The smartwatch is part of its range designed specifically for children, but it’s a notable departure from its previous offerings. Running on Wear OS, the Ace LTE offers a blend of fitness tracking, engaging games, parental controls, and communication features. However, its premium price and subscription model may raise some concerns.

Design and hardware

Visually, the Ace LTE resembles Fitbit’s adult smartwatches like the Sense 2 or Versa 4, featuring a square touchscreen display protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3. The device is water-resistant up to 50 meters and comes with a free bumper for added protection.

Under the hood, the Ace LTE is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon W5+ Gen 1 chip, boasts 2GB of RAM, and offers 32GB of storage. It is equipped with a variety of sensors, including an accelerometer, optical heart rate sensor, altimeter, magnetometer, ambient light sensor, and gyroscope. This tech enables accurate tracking of various activities and metrics. In fact, the specs are not too far off compared to what can be found in Google Pixel Watch 2.

The device’s battery life is estimated to last up to 16 hours, which may be a drawback. But that’s what you get with wear OS. You will need to charge it daily. It’s just the way it is.

Here’s how Ace LTE compares to its predecessor – Ace 3. As can be seen, the two devices may be similar in name – but they are very different as far as specs.

Feature

Fitbit Ace LTE

Fitbit Ace 3

Battery Life

Up to 16 hours

Up to 8 days

GPS

Built-in

No

Connectivity

4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC

Bluetooth

Games

Yes

No

Screen

Color PMOLED touchscreen

Monochrome OLED Touchscreen

Sensors

Accelerometer, optical heart rate sensor, altimeter, manometer, ambient light sensor, gyroscope

Accelerometer, vibration motor, optical heart rate sensor (deactivated)

OS

Wear OS

Fitbit OS

Software and features

The Ace LTE stands out with its interactive 3D games, accessible through the Fitbit Arcade. These games encourage physical activity by unlocking new levels and rewards as kids reach their movement goals. This gamified approach contrasts with the Ace 3’s simpler focus on step tracking.

In terms of communication, the Ace LTE enables calls, text messages, and voice messages between the child and parent-approved contacts (up to 20) through the Fitbit Ace app. It also offers real-time location tracking for parents’ peace of mind. Additionally, the device supports tap-to-pay functionality, providing a convenient and secure way for kids to make purchases.

Essential reading: Top fitness trackers and health gadgets

It’s interesting that Fitbit chose Wear OS for the Ace LTE, marking a departure from its proprietary operating system. This decision could signal a broader shift for Fitbit, potentially leading to a future where Wear OS becomes the primary platform for its devices. This turnout of events actually wouldn’t surprise us.

Pricing and subscription model

The Ace LTE is priced at $229.95, positioning it as a premium offering in the children’s smartwatch market. Additionally, a subscription to Fitbit Ace Pass is required for LTE connectivity and access to certain features, including the Fitbit Arcade and regular updates. This subscription costs $9.99 per month or $119.99 annually, with an annual subscription also including a collectible Ace Band. All of this makes the device very pricey.

While the Fitbit Ace LTE is primarily aimed at children, its gamified approach to health and fitness could offer valuable insights for Fitbit’s adult smartwatch strategy. By incorporating similar interactive elements and focusing on enjoyment rather than solely on data, Fitbit could potentially attract a wider audience who may find traditional fitness trackers like Garmin or Apple Watch uninspiring. It would make sense for Fitbit devices to prioritise engagement and fun as a means to promote a healthier lifestyle.

Obesity and excess weight are significant public health issues in developed nations like the US. This is a problem that affects the younger generation as well as grownups. We discuss the best fitness trackers for teenagers in this article.

The latest statistics show, 18.5% of Americans aged 2 to 19 were obese. For the teenage generation, this rises to more than one in five.

Essential reading: Best fitness trackers and health gadgets

Teenagers are advised to engage in at least an hour of cardio each day, according to physical activity guidelines. This actually isn’t that much. Sporting activities such as brisk walking, dancing, or even kicking a footbag in the driveway can all help people get a decent cardiac workout!

As they approach adolescence, kids occasionally lose interest in physical activity. Let’s face it, there are many diversions now that technology is so advanced. And its only going to go downhill from here.

By giving your teen an activity tracker, you can encourage them to be active. Teaching children the value of fitness and health at a young age can help them avoid heart disease, diabetes, and other health issues as they age. Additionally, if you wear a fitness tracker, it can even encourage friendly competition.

Here’s our pick of devices if you’re looking for a fitness band for your teen.

Jump to

Fitbit Inspire 3
Xiaomi Mi Band 7
Garmin Vivosmart 4
Fitbit Ace
Amazfit Bip S
Fitbit Luxe
Fitbit Charge 5
Apple Watch SE2

Frequently asked questions

Fitbit Inspire 3

The most well-known manufacturer of activity bands worldwide offers a cost-effective fitness gadget called the Inspire 3. This page covers a number of Fitbits, including this one.

The device’s simple, buttonless design doesn’t add much new to Fitbit’s offering. However, Inspire 3 does incorporate many features of its predecessors packaging them in a sleek and appealing product.

All the activity tracking basics are there. This includes steps, distance, calories, and heart rate and sleep (Light, Deep, REM). There is even SpO2 tracking. An altimeter for counting floors is the only thing that is missing. Not an issue for most people.

Fitbit Inspire 3 | Image source: Fitbit

For those who are interested, Inspire 3 will even connect to the smartphone’s GPS to deliver more precise information on running pace and distance. Because call, text, and calendar notifications from connected smartphones are included, your children will have no justification for not seeing your message.

The device’s excellent resolution AMOLED display replaces the monochrome one of its predecessor. This screen is actually one of the highlights of this device. Everything is considerably easier to read compared to Inspire 2, especially when on the go.

The battery life comes in at a respectable 10 days. As it covers the essentials without overwhelming with information, the water-resistant device is a fantastic choice for people just beginning to track fitness. It is reliable and effective at what it does.

Like all fitbits, the gadget will work with any phone, including iPhones and Androids. It connects to the smartphone app and there is also an internet dashboard.

Release date: August 2022 | Display: 1.4 inch AMOLED | Battery life: up to 10 days | Water resistance: 5 ATM (swim-proof) | Weight: 20 grams | Sensors: 3-axis accelerometer, vibration motor, optical heart rate sensor, SpO2 | Built-in GPS: No | Music storage: No | Cellular: No

Xiaomi Mi Band 7

The Mi Band 7 is an improved model of one of the most well-liked low-cost fitness bands in the world. Since its release earlier this year, the highly anticipated wearable has been flying off the shelves. Although not the cheapest device on the market, this one offers great value for money.

The seventh generation tracker shares a lot of similarities with its predecessor in terms of appearance. After all, there is only so much you can change in a fitness band. However, the Mi Band now has a sizable 1.62 inch AMOLED display. The modification gives the wearable a sleek appearance.

Additionally, there are many additional sports modes and an upgraded SpO2 sensor that can now track blood oxygenation around-the-clock. Additionally, you gain access to a number of performance measures including Vo2Max and Recovery Time. However, there is still no built-in GPS; instead, Connected GPS is available, which is a bit disappointing.

Xiaomi Mi Band 7 | Image source: Xiaomi

The same sturdy, rubberized design that is perfect for the younger generation is still present. It makes no sense to purchase something expensive that may be damaged easily. This is a robust device.

With its thin, stylish, water-resistant design, and intelligent fitness monitoring features, Mi Band gets the fundamentals right. Other features include caller ID, alarm clock, reminder notifications, weather, alarm, and a variety of clock faces.

The fitness tracker has awesome battery life and can stay on for up to 20 days before you’ll need to reach for the USB charger cable. As we note in our hands-on review, this is a device that ticks most boxes and will not break the bank.

Release date: May 2022 | Display: 1.62 inch AMOLED | Battery life: up to 20 days | Water resistance: 5 ATM | Weight: 23 grams | Sensors: 6. axis sensor: low power-consumption – 3-axis accelerometer and 3 axis gyroscope, PPG heart rate sensor, SpO2 | Built-in GPS: No (Connected GPS) | Music storage: No | Cellular: No

Garmin Vivosmart 4

Garmin Vivosmart 4 is yet another excellent choice. It comes in a small form-factor so is ideal for those with small wrists or if you are after something discreet.

The list of sensors under the hood is comprehensive. Even at night, the device will track blood oxygen levels, giving you more insight into how well your children sleep. Although Garmin would refrain from diagnosing these, the sleep monitoring feature could even be utilised to help detect disorders like apnea.

Garmin Vivosmart 4 | Image source: Garmin

The standard step, distance, calorie, floor, heart rate, sleep tracking, and numerous exercise modes are among the additional features. The Vivosmart 4 connects to a smartphone’s GPS and, like many other Garmin wearables, monitors stress, VO2 Max, reps and sets in the gym. If you already own a Garmin sports watch, this might be a great option for your teen.

View on Amazon*

Release date: September 2018 | Display: 0.26 inch OLED | Battery life: up to 7 days | Water resistance: 5 ATM | Weight: 23 grams | Sensors: 3-axis accelerometer, barometeric altimeter, optical heart rate sensor, SpO2 | Built-in GPS: No (Connected GPS) | Music storage: No | Cellular: No

Fitbit Ace

Given that it is intended for individuals 8 and older, this is a choice that may be utilised for younger children as well. Fitbit’s first fitness tracker for kids tracks sleep, active minutes, and steps automatically to motivate young people to stay active. We’re talking about the fundamentals here as there is only an accelerometer and vibration motor inside. Not even a heart rate monitor.

The tracker resembles the Alta quite a bit, as those who are familiar with the brand will notice. But this has been adopted for the younger generation.

Your children may monitor their development in real time thanks to the device’s B&W OLED tap display. With Fitbit’s family account, parents can control what their children see on the device. It also provides parents with the option to choose who their little ones connect with.

The tracker dispenses prizes for exercising along with upbeat messages and entertaining, virtual badges to add a little extra motivation. The shower-proof device, which is barely 15mm wide and has a battery life of up to 5 days, is available in a variety of colours.

Amazfit Bip S

Amazfit Bip S | Image source: Zepp Health

Amazfit Bip S is a great device for those on a budget. The gadget shares a striking resemblance with its well-known predecessor. This version has been upgraded with new sports modes, an enhanced GPS chip, better water resistance (5 ATM), and more.

The watch’s battery life, which was its predecessor’s main selling point, is still fantastic at 30 days (22 hours with GPS turned on), and it is now even lighter at just 31 grammes.

There’s a transflective colour display on-board that is always on and doesn’t deplete the battery. Worthy of note is that the display has good visibility in bright outdoor conditions.

This is not the best smartwatch you can buy – far from it. But it offers a lot.

In our review, we note that this is not a sports watch. But it offers a lot of the same functions for less than half the price. In fact, you will struggle to find a timepiece that delivers so much for the price. Bip devices have a loyal following for a reason.

Fitbit Luxe

Fitbit Luxe | Image source: Fitbit

Luxe is one of the more elegant-looking Fitbit models. Some believe that this is the most attractive product the company has produced to date. Having said that, the simple design might not be appealing to some. There are no longer any physical buttons, hard angles or edges, or even the Fitbit branding beneath the display. Everything has been streamlined.

The display of Luxe, an AMOLED with 124 x 206 pixels, is its most notable feature. Similar to other Fitbits, the menu system allows you to navigate by tapping and swiping on the display.

Although the strap is removable, we advise teenagers to go with silicon bands. These are kept firmly in position by a classic watch buckle made of anodized metal. We’re talking about polished stainless steel here, so the construction is incredibly robust. The device’s 26 gramme weight makes it hardly noticeable on the wrist.

There is a lot going on below the surface. An optical heart rate monitor, a three-axis accelerometer, a temperature sensor, a vibration motor, and an ambient light sensor are all part of the technology. The average battery life is 5 days.

There is no built-in GPS, but there is connected GPS. You’ll need to go for the next device on this list – Charge 5 – for that.

Fitbit Charge 5

Fitbit Charge 5 | Image source: Fitbit

When it comes to activity and health tracking, Charge 5 is an incredible powerhouse. The improvement over Generation 4 is substantial. Additionally, there are some lovely design tweaks. For instance, the tracker now supports a touchscreen with full colour AMOLED technology. The predecessor’s TFT Grayscale display wasn’t all that impressive.

The tracker has ECG and EDA sensors, which is new technology. Only one other Fitbit has them; however, Sense is a fully functional smartwatch. The key difference between the two is that this one comes in the form of an activity band and the other in the form of a watch. Both devices have essentially the same technology within.

It is worth noting, to get the full benefit from the advanced sensors you will need a Fitbit Premium subscription. But each purchase comes with free 6 months access. That should give your teen enough time to decide whether they need all the advanced stats.

There is also built-in GPS. Your teenager will value this if they are serious about outdoor activities like running. One of the few fitness bands with built-in GPS is Charge 5.

There’s also some smart functionality sprinkled in. This includes notification support, NFC for contactless payments, Spotify, and more.

Charge 5 is priced quite reasonably considering everything it does. The gadget provides most of the advanced fitness tracking smarts that Fitbit has to offer.

Apple Watch SE2

The 2022 Apple Watch SE is a newcomer on the block and is aimed for teenagers who are looking for a fully functional smartwatch. In fact, Apple is promoting the timepiece as something for teens that could be used instead of a smartphone. The device now takes the Series 3’s place as the entry-level Apple Watch.

The majority of people concur that the Apple Watch is, without a doubt, the best smartwatch available right now. You can choose from a huge selection of third-party apps. Additionally, watchOS 9 includes some useful updates.

SE brings many of the features of the regular iteration. This includes the new Crash Detection feature and Fall Detection.

The watch has a 30% larger display than Series 3. And it is 20% faster than the previous SE thanks to the inclusion of the new S8 chip. This is the same chip that can be found in Series 8.

FAQ

What percentage of teenagers in the US are obese?

The most recent figures show that 18.5% of Americans between the ages of 2 and 19 are obese. For teenagers, this proportion increases to more than one in five.

Teenagers need to exercise, but how much should they do each day?

The recommended amount of physical activity for teenagers is at least an hour of cardio each day.

What are the advantages of providing a fitness tracker to a teen?

Giving a teen a fitness tracker is a great way to get them moving and instil in them the value of fitness and health from an early age. As they get older, this can help them prevent health problems like diabetes and heart disease. Fitness tracker usage can promote friendly competition.

Which fitness tracker for a teen should I choose – there are so many devices out there?

Fitbit, Garmin, Amazfit, or Xiaomi are all excellent options if the teen’s main goal is to track exercise. These are all well-known companies with devoted consumers and a long history in the fitness tracker industry. Avoid unknown brands because their hardware or supporting software will likely be of questionable quality. As far as a fully fledged smartwatch, we would recommend the Apple Watch SE2.

Why are kids’ fitness trackers so popular?

Childhood obesity is a serious problem in many countries putting kids at risk for poor health. In the US, obesity now affects 1 in 6 children.

In fact, worldwide obesity has nearly tripled in the last 40 years. Over 400 million children and adolescents aged 19 and below are overweight or obese. Recent statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO) show this is not only a problem for high-income countries. Almost half of all overweight children under 5 live in Asia and a quarter in Africa.

The causes of excess weight gain in young people are similar to those in adults, including factors such as a person’s behavior and genetics. Weight management is a long-term approach to a healthy lifestyle. It includes a balance of healthy eating and physical exercise.

Children who have obesity are more likely to become adults with obesity. Adult obesity is associated with increased risk of a number of serious health conditions including heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer. If children have obesity, their obesity and disease risk factors in adulthood are likely to be more severe.

Physical activity declines over time

The view that physical activity is high in children and does not decline until adolescence continues to be widely held. However, a new study shows this to be wrong. It is actually an assessment of 50 published studies from around the world covering some 22,000 youngsters between the ages 2 and 18. The assessment was led by researchers at the University of Strathclyde, but also involved scientists from University College London, the University of Glasgow and the Aspetar Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Hospital in Doha, Qatar.

According to their figures, daily activity falls by around 3 to 4 minutes each year from the age of four or five. This is the case for both boys and girls.

“The view that physical activity is high in children and does not decline until adolescence – and even then chiefly among girls – continues to be widely held among policymakers and practitioners around the world,” said Professor John Reilly, of Strathclyde’s School of Psychological Sciences & Health.

“As a result, policies and practices aimed at promoting activity have focused on adolescent girls, who are seen as a group at high risk group of low and declining physical activity; our study indicates that, while the relative decline is greater among girls, there is no one high risk group. All children face a high risk and physical activity needs to be promoted to them – and their parents – before they even start school.”

Separately, the World Health Organization found that four out of five children between the ages of 11 and 17 do not meet current physical activity recommendations.

Kids may even be less active then their parents!

Another recent survey in 10 countries found that over half of children play outside less than an hour each day. What’s more, the report suggests kids are less active than their parents, four in five of whom head outdoors on a daily basis.

The report comes from market research firm Edelman Intelligence. They collected data from 12,000 parents who have at least one child aged 5- 12. Around 1,000 interviews were conducted across Brazil, India, Turkey, Portugal, China, South Africa, Vietnam and Indonesia; and 2,000 interviews in the US and UK. The study consisted of a 20 minute online interview.

Not surprisingly, the study found that more than two-thirds of youngsters watch TV every day. Kids also found around of 11 hours per week for chatting on the phone or typing away on the computer. Only a third of parents said their child’s favourite activity was playing outside.

In terms of actual figures, 69% of youngsters cited watching TV as a favourite activity after school. This was followed by playing outdoors (56%), playing indoors (48%) and playing on the internet/social media (45%). When asked to pick their favourite past time, playing outdoors was cited 36% of the time, followed by watching TV (28%), playing on the computer (26%), playing on smartphone/tablet (17%), playing indoors (16%) and watching Youtube videos (14%).

How active does my child need to be?

It can be difficult to motivate your child to move more. Medical guidelines from the World Health Organisation on the amount of recommended activity suggest 60 minutes of physical activity per day. This can include either moderate-intensity aerobic activity such as brisk walking, or vigorous-intensity activity such as running. Be sure to include vigorous-intensity aerobic activity on at least 3 days per week.

In the US, physical activity guidelines have recently changed. There are new key guidelines for children ages 3 through 5 and updated guidelines for the 6 to 17 year olds.

For pre-school children, the emphasis is on active play of light to vigorous intensity for at least 3 hours each day. This is important to enhance their growth and development. Teenagers should still aim for at least 60 daily minutes of moderate-to-vigorous activity.

Are fitness trackers good for kids?

Children love to achieve something. It makes them feel more important, it gives them something to work towards. By setting goals, getting feedback and being rewarded, little ones are encouraged to do more. Fitness trackers for kids create a sense of achievement, whilst making fitness seem like a game and promoting friendly competition.

And let’s not forget the all-important cool factor. That’s an area in which kids will always naturally compete: who has the best toys.

By teaching your children about their activity levels, you can help to make fitness a habit, not a chore. The more they learn about the benefits of movement and activity, the more likely they are to make an effort to stay fit long into their adult lives.

On top of all of this motivation, you can be sure that using the fitness trackers will be excellent for you as a parent. You will know when to reward effort and when to push for more, just by glancing at the stats.

What are the best fitness trackers for kids?

Trackers for kids may not yet be as commonplace as they are for adults, but perhaps they should be. What follows is our selection of some of the best devices on the market right now. Make sure that you give your kids the best start at fitness by getting them the coolest and funkiest fitness trackers.

These devices should not be confused with gadgets that enable parents to stay connected with their children throughout the day. Although some share the same functions, these wearables typically use a GPS system to pinpoint the exact location of your child on a map.

1. Garmin Vivofit Jr 2 – Best overall for kids

Cons:

More suitable for younger kids

Let’s cut right to the chase. Out of all fitness trackers for kids we’ve come across, Garmin Vivofit Jr 2 is our choice as the best device. The activity band ticks all the right boxes.

The gizmo comes with two important upgrades over its predecessor – an always-on color screen instead of a B&W screen. And second, Garmin has teamed up with Disney to deliver branded designs.

Yes, you still get all the great features. This includes a variety of educational mobile adventures for the kids, and family step challenges to get the parents off the sofa. As young ones reach their daily 60-minute activity goals, fun facts and a mobile adventure trail are unlocked. The tracker also features reminders for kids to stay active with a move bar and even monitors sleep.

Parents are able to assign their child chores to do around the house and Vivofit jr 2 will give the kids a nudge to complete them. Kids can even earn virtual coins for every task you assign, which they can then use to redeem in-app rewards.

The waterproof device comes with an accompanying smartphone app for parents. You can add multiple children to the app to see all your kids’ daily activity in one place. Characters from the bands will also show up in the mobile app.

The Vivofit Jr 2 band is available in a number of colorful themes including Star Wars, Stretchy Avengers, Marvel and Minnie Mouse. If you prefer, you can also opt for the first generation device which comes at a slightly lower price and similar specs.

Bottom line: This is the one to pick if you’re after the best fitness tracker for kids. It comes with an always-on colour display wedged in a rugged design, it gamifies fitness, there’s no charging and it comes from a well known brand. The only caveat is if you yourself own a Fitbit. In this case your little one might be better off with a Fitbit Ace or Ace 3 with their Family Account options.

2. Garmin Vivofit Jr 3 – best for younger kids

Ages: 4+

Pros:

Leading brand,

64 color screen,

educational app adventures,

Cons:

More suitable for younger kids

The look is the main difference between Vivofit Jr 3 and 2. The latest edition comes in the form of a smartwatch with a more high-res, 64 color display. This makes it more suitable for younger kids. The second generation takes the shape of a traditional fitness band with its 8 colour screen.

This iteration also keeps your kids engaged with educational app adventures. Parents also have the ability to set chores and tasks giving your little ones an opportunity to earn rewards.

Distance travelled is the only thing added to the third generation but it loses the move bar. The other thing it gains is a widget that holds your child’s emergency contact information.

The tracker can be picked up in a choice of designs. This includes Disney Princess, Marvel Studio, and a generic Garmin one.

Bottom line: More suitable for younger kids than its predecessor, Garmin Vivofit Jr 3 takes across most of its functions but packs it into something that looks like a kid’s smartwatch. The display is a nice improvement – not only is it bigger this time around but it’s also colour.

Fitbit was not someone you would associate with fitness trackers for kids until recently. With the Ace range, little ones finally got a Fitbit of their own. However for older kids there are other options.

One of these is Inspire 3. A replacement for the Alta range, this is something that can be used by anyone. The showerproof device automatically tracks steps, active minutes, sleep and provides encouragement to be active. It has up to 10 days of battery life and comes in a number of vibrant colours.

Because Ace has a 1.4 inch AMOLED display, your kid can see their progress in real time. Sensors on-board include a 3-axis accelerometer, vibration motor, heart rate and SpO2. Plus, if you have a Fitbit yourself you can promote a bit of friendly family competition.

Bottom line: Fitbit has a range of fitness bands on offer including some purely dedicated for kids. But with its adult look Inspire 3 is more suitable for older kids. It is a complete activity tracking solution that can also be used by adults.

4. Fitbit Ace 3 – Best Fitbit for kids

Ages: 6+

Pros:

The best Fitbit for younger kids,

can take a beating,

large display,

8 day battery life,

Family accounts in app,

virtual badges

Cons:

only tracks fitness (no games like Vivofit Jr 2)

Ace 3 is an activity band designed for children 6 and up. To serve this purpose it comes with a more rugged design than the previous generations generation, along with better water resistance (5 ATM).

This is a direct successor to Ace 2, making that iteration pretty much redundant. The two are practically identical, the changes are slight. The bumpers around the display are more streamlined and there are some other visual tweaks and more watch-faces. However the main improvement is that the battery life has been increased from 5 days to 8 days.

In terms of activity, Ace 3 tracks all-day steps and active minutes, sleep, there’s a 1-hour active minutes goal (as per WHO recommendations), virtual badges and more. Unlike Ace 2, Ace 3 has a heart rate monitor. This is currently switched off but as its there, don’t be surprised if Fitbit enables it via a future software update.

Along with the wearable, the San Francisco outfit has recently introduced a family account which allows parents to safeguard their kids’ privacy and stay on top of their activity. The Parent view lets you navigate between your view and your kid’s view to check their activity and progress. It also allows you to manage who your children connect with and what information they see.

Bottom line: If you are after a device for younger kids, Ace 3 is a great choice. Particularly if you own a Fitbit yourself. It covers all the kid-friendly basics without overloading with features.

As they move and earn points, kids unlock each of the additional eight pets and earn virtual toys for each of them.

Bottom line: Now a few years old, this one is suitable for very young kids. The wearable comes with a fun design which should keep your little one engaged. No fitness stats on this one, kids get fun physical challenges instead.

No physical buttons, can be difficult to navigate display

It is a popular choice for adults as it gets the basics right and with its lightweight, slick, water-resistant design, looks good enough to wear during the day, in the office or for an evening function. But this is a lightweight wearable that is also suitable for kids.

The seventh generation comes with a massive 1.62 AMOLED display that is easy to read. As detailed in our hands-on review, that is the main upgrade over the predecessor generation.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Why should I buy a fitness tracker for my kids?

Fitness motivate your child to move more by creating a sense of achievement, turning fitness into a game and encouraging healthy competition amongst friends and family. By teaching your children about their activity levels, you can help to make fitness a habit, not a chore. Kids will learn about the benefits of movement and activity, which will make it more likely they will stay fit long into their adult lives.

What is the best fitness tracker for my child?

You are typically best off going with well known brands. Fitbit and Garmin have a wide selection of fitness trackers for adults as well as kids.

Our device of choice is the Garmin Vivoactive Jr 2. It has an always-on color screen, colorful designs, it gamifies fitness, a variety of educational mobile adventures for the kids, doesn’t require charging. However, if you have younger kids, you are better off going with the third generation tracker.

What is the best Fitbit for kids?

Our recommendation is to go for Ace 3. The device is an iterative upgrade over Ace 2. Fitbit will probably sell off the stocks of the second generation and phase it out. If you have older kids, you might be better off going with Inspire 3. The other option is to go for an adult Fitbit. Charge 5 is not bulky and might be a good fit for a teen.

You can read more about various Fitbit options for little ones on this link.

What is the best device for teenagers?

Statistics show that obesity prevalence totaled 18.5% amongst Americans aged 2-19 years. This goes up to more than one in five for the teenage generation. So a device to motivate your teen to move more is a good purchase.

We have done a separate piece on the best fitness trackers for teenagers. You can check it out on this link.

What about privacy concerns?

A lot has been written about privacy issues to do with kids wearables. Concerns have been raised about GPS devices for kids that have been discovered to have security flaws which make them vulnerable to hackers. The good news is that you will not have such worries with the devices on this page. None of them have built-in GPS so are not as vulnerable to outside intrusions.

The problem is there for kids smartwatches and safety tracking devices, but not fitness bands. Many of these are produced in Asian countries, which don’t have such stringent safety procedures, and imported elsewhere. This is why it’s best to opt for a well recognised brand.

Why purchase a smartwatch for kids?

Today’s little ones are growing up surrounded by computers, tablets and Youtube. Technology has always been a part of their life – quite different from just a couple of decades ago.

Smartwatches for kids are becoming more and more popular these days. Some parents want to encourage their child to be more active so opt for a smartwatch that tracks fitness. Others want to know their children are safe, so opt for a wearable that allows them to track their GPS location at all times.

Purchasing a device with a built-in SIM card allows parents to stay in touch even if their kids don’t have a smartphone. This does come with an on-going monthly subscription, though. Just like with a smartphone.

Should I worry about smartwatches for kids privacy issues?

This article wouldn’t be complete if we didn’t touch on privacy concerns. A number of GPS smartwatches for kids in recent years have been discovered to have security flaws which make them vulnerable to hackers. Similar concerns have been raised about kids’ connected toys in the past.

Some of these devices have been revealed to transmit and store data without encryption. This means that in a few simple steps, a stranger could track, eavesdrop or communicate with the kids, or even make it appear a child is at a different location. Furthermore, some devices sent personal information to servers, lacked proper terms and conditions and an option for users to delete their accounts.

Many of these smartwatches seem to originate from and/or be produced in China, and are imported to different European and North American markets through specialized websites run by startups or enterprising individuals, in addition to traditional retailers. This is why it’s important to opt for a well recognized brand.

In Germany, the regulator has gone as far as to ban children’s smartwatches with listening capabilities as they go against the country’s surveillance laws. This seems a bit extreme and has attracted controversy. In addition to hacking, the reason for the ban was that some parents had used the devices to secretly monitor teachers!

Enthusiasm for kids smartwatches nevertheless remains. We are not exactly spoiled for choice when it comes to quality smartwatches for kids so its important to do some research before deciding on a purchase. What follows is our selection of devices that are worth considering.

1. Garmin Bounce

Ages: not specified

Bounce is Garmin’s first smartwatch for little ones. The company has more than a decade of experience in sports watches and it is now porting this knowledge over to the kids’ wearable space. Mind you, the outfit does already have a few fitness trackers for kids, but this is its first effort on the smartwatch front.

Bounce packs a 1.3 inch LCD and comes in Green Burst, Black Camo and Lilac Floral case options. This is a robust yet lightweight timepiece. It only comes in at 37 grams. Water-resistance is an excellent 5 ATM. This means the kids can wear the watch worry-free 24 hours a day.

There is basic fitness tracking tech on-board but no heart rate sensor. Your little one will be guided to achieve specific health goals such as 60 minute daily activity.

Beyond that, the watch packs LTE tech. This will set you back $9.99 per month or $99.99 for a full year. The connectivity does not require a phone number as it is directly managed by Garmin servers.

This allows for two-way texting and voice messaging with pre-approved contacts. Parents can set defined geogrpahical areas and children can use the check-in feature to share their current location. There is also an Assistance feature which will send a notification at the press of a button.

All in all, Garmin Bounce is a comprehensive offering. Some other features worth mentioning include the ability to assign chores through the smartphone app, there are games, alerts and some more kid friendly features.

Garmin*

2. Verizon Gizmowatch 2

Verizon announced in April last year the second generation of its GizmoWatch for kids. Strangely enough, despite a bump in specs this iteration is cheaper than the original.

You get 2-way voice calls and messaging, GPS connectivity, 4GB memory, 4G LTE support, IP-67 water-resistance, sending and receiving emojis and fun voice recordings. There’s also a step counter to help keep your little ones active.

Verizon has gone big on safety features this time around. Gizmowatch 2 packs a GPS locator feature that allows you to find your child at any time. There’s also geofencing and you’ll get a notification if your little one strays outside the pre-defined safety zone. All of this can be managed from the smartphone app.

For added security, up to ten parentally-approved contacts are accessible and can be Quick Dialled from the watch. This ensures no numbers outside the predefined ones can be added. The thing can also be set to Auto Answer after repeat calls.

The New York-based telecommunications company is a well known multinational telecommunications conglomerate. Currently, Verizon is ranked as the largest mobile network in the US, ahead of T-Mobile, AT&T and Sprint. Mind you, all of these have smartwatches for kids but GizmoWatch is probably the most popular option amongst them.

The Kidizoom DX2 is the new and improved version of the company’s original watch. Now better than ever, this is one of the most popular devices for kids on Amazon. It lets young ones take pictures, videos, play games, tell time and more.

The previous generation DX allows little ones to take pictures and videos via a 0.3 megapixel camera. There is a voice recorder that lets them change their voice and give it cool effects, a pedometer, and games which can be played via the touch screen.

The second generation brings all of this and more. With a new sleek and stylish design the DX2 includes 55 digital and analog customizable watch faces. It features two cameras that allow children to capture everything from action videos to selfies and allows them to customize them into watch faces via the accompanying smartphone app. There is also an assortment of new games.

The watch helps teach kids how to tell time by letting them choose between a number of 3D digital and analog displays. In addition to the alarm, timer and stopwatch, there is a calendar feature and calculator so your child can work out simple addition, subtraction, multiplication and division problems.

Unlike some of the other options in this article Kidizoom DX is very budget friendly. The one-off cost is low and there’s no on-going monthly subscription.

Ages: 5 to 12

A new addition to this list, TickTalk 4 is the fourth generation of the kid’s wrist phone with locator. It improves on the third version in a number of different ways.

TickTalk 4

This touch-screen device tries to cover all the bases. It combines 2-way video calling, voice calling, Wi-Fi calling, smart secure messaging, and location-tracking capabilities, parental controls, SOS contacts into one simple device. The company says this is the only kids’ watch phone that can make video calls smoothly in the US.

Unlike its predecessor the wearable also has some health features. These come in the form of step tracking.

A novel feature is the free streaming music powered by iHeartRadio Family. You won’t find this on other kids smartwatches.

To keep your little ones busy, there are 2x 5MP Selfie and Snapshot photo and video cameras. With all this, the timepiece represents a good and safe cell phone alternative.

An improvement is the newly added dedicated GPS for location tracking. The display is also better than in the previous version and battery life has been much improved. In fact, there’s a massive 1,000mAh battery inside – which is probably part of the reason the device is so bulky.

In essence, the watch works like a standalone cellphone. TickTalk is offering a $10 prepaid monthly plan with RedPocketor, but you can add a new line to your own GSM carrier, such as AT&T, T-Mobile, Metro PCS, and Cricket.

The kid-friendly GizmoPal provides easy, reliable ways to keep track of your children, and offers simple two-way calling so you can stay in touch at all times.

The durable form factor uses safe and sturdy materials for your child’s active lifestyle. The thing is IPX3 water resistant rated for everyday use (e.g.,hand washing).

At any time parents can open the smartphone apps and view their child’s location. You can also receive alerts of their location at pre-set times.

Furthermore, after setting boundaries the watch will send notifications if it detects the child crossing them. This is great if they’re outside playing, or if someone is home watching them.

GizmoPal works as a phone, too. Your child can make calls to two caregivers and receive calls from up to four preregistered numbers. For added safety, the phone auto-answers calls after 10 seconds.

To get your kids moving, there are few motion-sensitive games, too.

The watch has a plethora of other features. It functions as an activity tracker, music player, calculator, calendar, alarm, stopwatch and more. The front-facing camera allows for selfies and recording of videos with photo filters and frames, with 256MB on-device storage.

Kurio can also be setup to communicate with the parents smartphone via Bluetooth. This serves as a hands-free way to text, and make and take free voice and video calls. No phone or contract required.

In case of emergency, there’s an app on the thing where you can enter your child’s vital information such as blood type and allergies. Contact information is there as well, so you can be contacted quickly.

The watch comes with a 1.54” touchscreen, along with a scratch resistant and splash proof design. In the box there are two interchangeable bands to match your kid’s style!

7. Sprint WatchMeGo

Ages: 4 to 13 years

Sprint launched its first smartwatch for kids in early 2020. Cleverly dubbed WatchMeGo, it aims to give parents peace of mind when their kids are not at home.

The Kansas-based telecommunications company is a well known wireless and internet service provider. Currently, Sprint is ranked as fourth largest mobile network in the US.

Sprint represents a slightly more budget friendly rival than its cellularly-enabled competitors. WatchMeGo retails for $144 on the company’s website, and requires parents to cough-up about $10 a month to enable the watch’s security and communication functions.

As its name implies, WatchMeGo is designed predominantly with safety in mind. For starters, there’s real-time GPS tracking via a smartphone app for parents. The software allows for defining safety zones so if the little one strays across a boundary, an immediate notification will be sent out. Multiple watches can be tracked from a single app. Kids, on the other hand, have an SOS button they can use to manually send an alert.

You can’t use the timepiece to make or receive voice calls, but text and video messaging is available. This is done through the watch and app. Kids can send messages directly on the watch while parents will need to use a smartphone.

There’s an optional smartphone app for the little ones, as well. Called Kidomy it provides hundreds of educational games, videos, e-books and activities for Android and iOS devices.

The attractive looking watch comes with a Gorilla Glass watch face for durability, as well as IP67 water-resistance. Under the hood there’s 4GB of ROM and 512MB RAM, with everything powered by an Arm Cortex A7 processor and a 400mAh battery.

This is a decent offering although there is nothing really groundbreaking about it. The most interesting part about the watch is the attractive design, and the fact that it comes from one of the “big four” wireless service providers.

8. Little Tikes Toby Robot

Ages: 4 to 8 years

Ohio-based Little Tikes is a well-known American manufacturer of children’s toys. Previously, the company predominantly focused on low-tech plastic toys for infants and young children. But now it’s got in on the smartwatch game.

At first glance Tobi Robot looks like other smartwatches for kids. What makes it different in terms of design are the moving robot arms and legs. The thing comes with fun sound effects, over 50 watch faces and tons of expressions to keep your kids interested. They are able to wear it on their wrist or attach it to their clothes using the included clip.

The Tobi Robot smartwatch comes with a range of games including some augmented reality ones. A number of these encourage your little ones to be active. For example, there are dance activity games that rely on the motion sensor that is built into the pedometer.

The watch also has two cameras on-board so your little ones can take video, selfies and photos. The device itself can store up to 3,000 photos or 30 minutes of video.

Little Tikes says the watch is easy to use. It comes with a touchscreen and rechargeable battery. There’s also wireless connectivity and messaging between pre-approved Tobi Robot smartwatch devices, timers, alarms and more.

Another edition to this range is the Toby 2. It comes with a different personality, over 100 emotive expressions, innovative games and many of the features of Toby Robot. Check it out in the video below.

9. Timex Family Connect

Ages: 5 to 10 years

The Timex Family Connect runs on the T-Mobile network. This is a fully featured cellular connected smartwatch for kids with two-way calling on 4G LTE, voice and instant messaging – all on a private secure network.

For your little one’s safety there are one-button SOS alerts, real-time location sharing, parents can set GPS safe zones and approve contacts and reminders through the iPhone/Android parent’s app. Finally, there’s also basic activity tracking and step counting.

The watch is designed for small wrists and comes with a comfortable, durable design. It comes in only a teal and space blue color option. The full price is $168.00 but there is a 24 month monthly $7 finance option. On top of this is a monthly subscription for the cellular service.

What about the big brands such as Fitbit and Apple?

Fitbit is building a smartwatch for kids

Fitbit is reportedly building its first fully fledged smartwatch for kids with 4G connectivity. The company has taken under its belt Hong Kong-based Doki Technologies in an effort to release the device in the near future. The company currently has a few fitness bands for kids but nothing in the smartwatch department.

If you’ve not heard of Doki Technologies, they are the Hong Kong-based startup made the world’s first kids video watch a number of years back. The latest addition to its arsenal was unveiled a couple of years ago. Dubbed dokiPal, it comes with 4G LTE connectivity, location tracking, video calling AI voice assistance, fitness tracking and more.

Fitbit bought Doki Technologies on October 22nd 2019, which is shortly before the Google acquisition of Fitbit went through. Which means it was a last minute deal that could have easily gone awry.

Fitbit will reportedly use Doki’s platform and hardware knowhow to conjure up a 4G kids smartwatch. This will likely take on other functionality from the existing Doki offering. No doubt Google will have input and knowhow to contribute to the project.

The market for kids fitness trackers and smartwatches is a growing one. Apart from Fitbit the only other mainstream brand with a significant presence in this space is Garmin. But unlike Fitbit, it has recently made an entry into the kids smartwatches with Garmin Bounce.

Apple is also making headway into this space

Apple is one of the brands looking to gain an entry into this lucrative space. The watchOS7 operating system will also come with Parental Controls.

With Family Set Up, parents can pair their iPhone to their little one’s Apple Watch. That allows them to track their child’s location through GPS, communicate with call or text messages and utilize parental controls and limits on what apps and services their kids can access.

All of this means the Apple Watch is a viable alternative to a fully fledged kids smartwatch. It costs a bit more but you can always opt for the SE version which does not run as much. It is very likely all of this is a prelude to an Apple-made smartwatch for kids in the near future.

In this article we provide a selection of Fitbit devices for your kids and teenagers. These wearables only focus on fitness tracking so lack safety tracking functionality that can be found in certain other devices. Fitbit is yet to come out with such a device, or a smartwatch for kids for that matter. It is rumoured to be working on one, though.

Introduction – why get a fitness tracker for your kids?

Activity tracking devices for children may not yet be as commonplace as they are for adults, but perhaps they should be. Childhood obesity is a serious problem. In the US, nearly a third of youths are overweight or obese.

Fitness trackers for kids motivate your child to move more by creating a sense of achievement. They also turn fitness into a fun game and encourage healthy competition.

By teaching your children about their activity levels, it helps to make fitness a habit, not a chore. Kids and teenagers learn about the benefits of movement and activity, which makes it more likely they will stay fit long into their adult lives.

On top of all of this you can be sure that using a fitness tracker will be excellent for you as a parent. You will know when to reward effort, and when to push for more, just by glancing at the stats. And hey, it might even motivate you to get off that sofa!

Until a few years ago Fitbit did not have activity devices solely designed for kids. Now it has.

The most recent addition to the range is the Fitbit Ace 3. As its name implies, this is its third fitness tracker for children. But some of the company’s other wearables can be used by kids and teenagers, too. And if you have a Fitbit yourself, this means you can promote a bit of friendly competition. Encouraging one another is a great way to stay motivated.

Fitbit Ace 3 – the best Fitbit for younger kids

Ace 3 is designed for children 6 and up. To serve this purpose it comes with a much more rugged design than the first generation along with better water resistance (5 ATM). So there’s great durability there. You can view Ace 3 as an iterative upgrade on Ace 2. It pretty much makes the second generation redundant.

The wearable has a large screen, so much so that it looks more like a smartwatch than a fitness tracker. The bumpers around the display are designed to protect the wearable during playtime.

In terms of activity, Ace 3 tracks all-day steps and active minutes, sleep, there’s a 1-hour active minutes goal (as per WHO recommendations), virtual badges and more. Kids can make the tracker their own with bands and accessories. There are also lots of clock faces, including some that are animated and change throughout the day.

Battery life is a decent 8 days between charges. That is one of the biggest upgrades over Ace 2 which only has 5.

Parents will be happy to know there’s a family account which allows them to safeguard their kids’ privacy and stay on top of their activity. The Parent view in the Fitbit app lets you navigate between your view and your kid’s view to check on their activity and progress. It also provides you with a means to manage who your children connect with and what information they see on the OLED display.

For those with a good memory this fitness tracker resembles the old Fitbit Alta. The device has been discontinued but Ace lives on.

The tracker is specifically designed for kids 8 and older. It has up to 5 days of battery life and comes in two vibrant colours.

Because it has an OLED tap display, your kid can see their progress in real time. The tracker dishes out rewards for moving with celebratory messages and fun, collectible badges.

Fitbit Ace 2

This is Fitbit’s first activity tracker for young kids. The device is very rugged and has excellent water-resistance.

In essence, Fitbit Ace 2 comes with most features that you will find on the third generation. However its battery life is shorter. You only get 5 days as compared to 8 days on the latest device. It also misses out on some watch-faces and the display quality is a tad bit lower.

We’ve pulled together a detailed comparison between Fitbit Ace 3 and Ace 2 in case you are interested in all the minute details.

The price difference between the two wearables is only $10. So in our mind, there’s no real reason to purchase the old device instead of the new one.
A interesting addition to Fitbit’s range, this is a fitness tracker for adults that can also be used by older kids and teenagers due to its lightweight, slim design.

Inspire 3 does not come with anything revolutionary. Rather, it repackages Fitbit’s existing technology into a more modern form-factor, and makes it affordable to the masses.

The device is a good option for adults starting to track their fitness or teens as it covers the basics without overloading you with data. It’s currently one of the best value for money fitness trackers in Fitbit’s range.

Fitbit Luxe – a feature-rich option for teens

A new device, this one comes in the form of a discreet activity band but it offers a lot.
A highlight of the device is its beautiful AMOLED display. Water resistance is also great.

Parents might be happy to know there are some more advanced health tracking functions. This includes blood oxygen and skin temperature variation monitoring. These types of metrics might be useful in these covid times as they can be an early indicator of illness.

If you’re a Fitbit fan you’ll have probably heard of Charge 4. It is one of the most popular fitness band manufactured by the company.

A great choice for adults, it can also be used by older teens due to it’s small form-factor. We would not suggest using it for those that are younger as it is an adult fitness band.

An important upgrade over Charge 3 is that Fitbit Charge 4 has built-in GPS – so no smartphone needed for detailed tracking of some outdoor exercise modes. Teens are unlikely to use this so you might save a few bucks by opting for the third generation device. Its other features are nearly identical to the latest iteration.

The fitness device tracks all the important stats around the clock.

The built-in GPS is still there. Mind you, this cannot be used for safety tracking – only for activity tracking. Which is not too useful for most teens apart from older ones serious about their athletic pursuits.

The other big upgrade between generation 4 and 5 is the AMOLED screen that can be found on the new tracker. It is a thing of beautify and makes Charge 5 look really nice.

Best features

Packs a plethora of fitness and health tracking functions

Recommended age: 13+

Bottom line: This device is one of the most fully featured health and fitness bands in existance. It is for those that want something attractive with all the bells and whistles.

Fitbit Versa Lite – a lightweight smartwatch that won’t break the bank

Moving onto smartwatches. Until recently Fitbit didn’t have any smartwatches. This has now changed. We are still waiting, though, for the company’s first smartwatch for kids. But some of the existing devices can be used by teens.

Top of this list is Fitbit Versa Lite. The wearable is light on price but not on features. We’ve included this device rather than the first or second generation Versa as we feel it’s more suitable for teenagers.

Why you ask? Well, Lite is a stripped back version of those devices.

It lacks the physical buttons for navigating the display, an altimeter for counting floors, on-board storage for music, NFC for contactless payments and a few other extras. But this makes it quite affordable. So you don’t need to worry if you’re teenager damages the watch or looses it!

Best features

Great value for money

Has all the activity tracking essentials

Weighs only 38 grams

4 day battery life

Recommended age: 13+

Bottom line: At the moment, this is probably the most suitable Fitbit smartwatch for teens. The device is lightweight on price but covers the fitness tracking essentials. Worth noting is that battery life is only around four days.

View on Amazon*

Fitbit Versa 3 or 4 – a more spec heavy smartwatch for older teens

This is close to the top of the range as far as Fitbit smartwatches. The only device that surpasses are in the Fitbit Sense range.

Instead of Versa 4, you could go for Versa 3. There is very little difference between them. It pretty much ends with a slightly sleaker look and a few more workout options. The benefit of going for the third generation tracker is that you are more likely to find good discounts.

If, however, you want top of the line – you won’t go wrong with Versa 4. And hey, if you kid doesn’t like it – you could always wear it yourself!

The device has a lot to offer. It’s worth noting, some of the more advanced functionality sits behind a pay-wall. With a Fitbit Premium Account you also get access to the Health Metrics Dashboard. That comes with the addition of Breathing Rate, heart rate variability, skin temperature and more.

If your teenager wants a great smartwatch, Versa 4 is a great option. It might also be a good choice for older teens that are into athletics and other sports pursuits.

Best features

One of the most feature-packed Fitbits out there

FAQ

Hopefully, this guide has helped you narrow down the device that might be suitable for your little ones. There’s a nice selection of Fitbit devices to choose from and it’s only going to get better from here.

The bottom line – which Fitbit wearable for kids should I choose?

To recap, for younger kids the latest Fitbit Ace 3 is the device of choice. It is suitable for those 6 and above, it comes with lots of features and a very sturdy design. The third generation pretty much makes the second generation redundant.

Those slightly older should opt for Fitbit Ace. The device looks like an adult tracker but works through the family account, so their parents can keep a tab on things.

Teens can always opt for a device for adults. Inspire 3 is the most discreet option and suitable for those with small wrists. For a more serious device, Charge 4 or Charge 5 are the way to go. The first doesn’t have built-in GPS the second does. Your child probably does not need built-in GPS as this is for more serious tracking of outdoor exercise.

As far as smartwatches, Fitbit does not make a dedicated smartwatch for kids. At least not yet (see below). So you’re only choice are those that are built for adults such as a watch from the Versa line.

How does a Fitbit Family Account work?

Fitbit provides a Family Account designed to give parents peace of mind. It allows them to safeguard their kids’ privacy and stay on top of their activity.

They can control who their kids connect with, and what information they see on the display. Parents can also check to see how active their kids are. Kids, on the other hand, can access their account through a secure Kids View.

Only a Guardian can create and delete child accounts. They are the one that creates the Family Account in the first place. A family can assign multiple Guardians, all of which need to be over 18 years old.

You will need to have a Family Account the first time you set up device from the Fitbit Ace range. After that add your child and set up their profile. Then sync the Ace tracker with the Fitbit app on the phone or table your child will be using to see their fitness stats. From that point on they are good to go.

Does Fitbit have a fitness tracker for kids with GPS?

At the moment Fitbit does not have a fitness tracker for kids with GPS. This is because it is focusing on fitness tracking rather than safety tracking.

Kids devices with GPS typically use the satellite signal for this purpose. We are still waiting for a Fitbit for kids with GPS, so you will have to look for other options.

Having said that, Charge 4, Charge 5 and a few Fitbit-made smartwatches do have built-in GPS. But these are only utilised for outdoor activity tracking. You can not use them to monitor the location of your little ones. At least, not yet.

Does Fitbit make a kids smartwatch?

Fitbit is reportedly building a smartwatch for kids with 4G connectivity. These are all rumours for now. But to make the job easier, the company has taken under its belt Hong Kong-based Doki Technologies. If you’ve not heard of them, the Hong Kong-based startup made the world’s first kids video watch a number of years back.

The latest addition to its arsenal was unveiled in July 2019.

When are we likely to see this watch? In 2020 there was talk it would be out by the end of the year. Now that Fitbit is under Google’s belt, it might delay things further. It’s only a matter of time, though, until Fitbit does come out with a smartwatch for kids. It is an untapped market – there are a few players but not many big names such as Apple, Garmin and others.

Legality issues and Fitbit for kids and teenagers – the small print

A few years ago there were no fitness trackers for kids. This has all changed now. But of course there are legality issues.

Fitbit prohibits anyone under the age of 13 (or the minimus age in the country where the person resides), to use the Fitbit Service unless they have their parents consent. So teenagers do not need this permission, but kids do.

Hence the Family Account described above and the fact that Guardians (parents) need to set up the account so that their little ones can start using the Ace fitness tracker. This way the parent gives consent in accordance with applicable laws.

There is Privacy Policy for Children’s Accounts that explains what information Fitbit collects to set u kids accounts, what information they use for the children’s use of their services, and how they share that information. You can read more about it on the Fitbit Legal – Kids’ Privacy page. The most important thing to know is that Fitbit does NOT gather location tracking data from your child.

When the child turns 13, then they can create their own Fitbit account the same way as an adult would do. In this case they don’t need their parents permission any more.

Fitbit is reportedly building a smartwatch for kids with both cellular and GPS connectivity. This is in order to allow for safety features.

The rumour should come as no surprise to anyone. The company has been said to be working on such a device for a number of years now.

Fitbit has a few activity bands for little ones in the Ace series. But these are primarily focused on fitness tracking and have no cellular abilities.

Essential reading: Best Fitbit for kids & teenagers

The market for kids fitness trackers and smartwatches is a growing one. Apart from Fitbit the only other mainstream brand with a significant presence is Garmin. But just like Fitbit, it currently doesn’t have a kids smartwatch – only fitness bands.

Fitbit has been working on this for at least 3 years

Just prior to the Google acquisition Fitbit had taken under its belt Hong Kong-based Doki Technologies. The deal went through on October 22nd 2019. Which means it was a last minute transaction that could have easily gone awry.

Fitbit’s original aim was to release a fully fledged smartwatch by the end of 2020. The Google deals has obviously shifted things around.

If you’ve not heard of Doki Technologies, the Hong Kong-based startup made the world’s first kids video watch a while back. The last addition to its arsenal was unveiled in July 2019. Dubbed dokiPal, it comes with 4G LTE connectivity, location tracking, video calling AI voice assistance, fitness tracking and more.

Reportedly, the plan was to use Doki’s platform and hardware knowhow to conjure up a 4G kids smartwatch. This would likely take on functionality from the existing Doki offering. It turns out, this could still be on the cards.

A cellular Fitbit smartwatch for older kids

As revealed in an article by Business Insider yesterday, the smartwatch Fitbit is working on will be aimed at older kids. It will have cellular and GPS connectivity and comprehensive safety features.

Beyond that, the smartwatch will have fitness tracking abilities and will be “designed to help kids form healthy relationships with their phones and social media”. All of this sounds very much along the lines of the Doki offering.

The device was, apparently, prototyped with and without a screen. As part of a possible subscription service, there’s an idea to send users a new band each month.

The work on the kids watch is part of “Project Eleven”. Interestingly, this team is being led by Anil Sabharwal who is a former executive in charge of Google Photos. Don’t expect the Fitbit smartwatch for kids tomorrow. This project has a 2024 launch date.

Hearth Display is your bulletin board reimagined. This is a tool you can use to simplify organization and task management for the whole family.

Unfortunately stress has become all too commonplace in these fast times. Technology is meant to help us. But often it contributes to making our lives even busier. Hearth Display is something that is meant to eliminate the chaos from your life.

Think of it as a digital white board and task manager that features a large 27-inch colour display. All members of your household can connect to keep tabs and check off tasks that have been completed. Which means no more posting notes on the fridge and back and fourth texting with your kids to try and stay on top of things.

Essential reading: Top fitness trackers and health gadgets

The device comes from Brooklyn-based company that goes by the same name as the product. Earlier this year they raised more than $3 million in new funding that will go towards advancing product development. Furthermore, the company has opened pre-orders on Indiegogo for those that want to pick up the device ahead of launch at a discount. So far more than $500,000 has been raised on the crowdfunding platform from around 1,000 individuals.

Heart Display – how it can help simplify your life

Hearth Display is ideal for those that want to keep track of chores, grocery lists and all other to-do items. You can connect existing Google calendars to Hearth, use Hearth’s native calendar, scan an image of a schedule and more.

Up to 20 people can add their profiles to the device and AI will sift through them and flag up conflicts. Events, appointments, to-dos, chores, and routines are organised in one place so you can visualise what is happening.

This can be a great tool for your kids, as well. It can help them build routines and independence. So no more nagging to get things done. The calendar notifies of important information and chores! You can also set up a family’s “shared” list so that anyone can pick up the slack. And when you are not so busy, Hearth Display can be set to display your photos and art.

New items can be added to the calendar directly from Hearth. Or sync your existing Google calendar and any changes will be uploaded automatically.

This can be great in managing your health as well. Create a Google Calendar called “Health” and then just add entries for anything you want to note such as “hay fever”, “diarrhea” or “period started.”

Parental controls, like profiles and settings, as well as your family information that is shown on Hearth can be managed from a smartphone app and web dashboard. In the future, the company plans to expand features to include caretakers/nannies, grandparents, extended family and more. All of this will arrive via over-the-air software updates. iCal and Outlook integration is also coming soon.

Installation is simple

The device itself comes in three frame finishes: Wood Veneer, Matte White and Matte Black. The dimensions come in at 16.5 inch width and 26.7 inch height. The colour display has an anti-glare coating and there’s a built-in camera with a privacy cover attached. As far as connectivity, you can choose between a wired setup (via Ethernet) or wireless (WiFi/Bluetooth).

There’s an accompanying mount in the box which you can use to hang Hearth Display on your wall. Then simply plug it in, connect to WiFi, set up your account and you are good to go.

As mentioned, the company is running an Indiegogo campaign where you can pre-order the device. It costs $499 which is 28% off what it will eventually retail for when it is made available in May next year.

Zepp Health’s (known as Huami in China) has released in China its first ever smartwatch for kids. Instead of focusing on educational tools, Amazfit Happy Duck Children’s Health Watch packs health and sports tracking functionality.

The Amazfit brand has seen the release of a plethora of smartwatches over the years. Some would even go as far as saying there have been perhaps a few too many. Strangely enough the outfit has been very quiet this year and we didn’t see many new launches.

Essential reading: Top fitness trackers and health gadgets

A couple of weeks back we found out the brand is working on a new version of its operating system and chipset for smartwatches. Along with this, it was announced that blood pressure measurements from the wrist are coming by the end of this year. Then we saw a visual revamp of the Zepp Health app.

These are certainly positive developments. Rather than focusing on spitting out lots of new devices, the company is taking some time to improve the software and work on the next generation tech.

One thing that has been missing so far from the Amazfit lineup is a device solely dedicated to kids. Until now.

Amazfit Happy Duck – a health watch just for kids

The new device was officially launched only in China for now. When we reported earlier on the story, it was our understanding it would be called Amazfit Pop Pro. In the end this was not the case. Instead, the watch goes under the name Amazfit Happy Duck Children’s Health Watch (translation from Chinese).

The other name it goes by is Happya Children’s Health Watch. This is because alongside the watch the company announced a mascot called Happya. The idea is to inspire children to engage in more sports and physical activities.

The CEO of Huami, Huang Wang, said in a series of posts that they’ve first thought about a kids watch more than six years ago. That is when the company received an offer for such as device, which they rejected in favour of conquering the smartwatch space. But it is clear that Huami has been kicking around the idea for some time.

“Back then, children’s watches were used primarily to meet children’s real-time communication and positioning security needs,” said the CEO.

“They were made like children’s cell phones strapped to their wrists.”

Unlike the adult market, the kids smartwatch market is not saturated with big names. Garmin, Fitbit, Samsung, Apple and other big names are yet to make an appearance in this space. Which leaves it dominated by a large number of smaller wearable tech players. For some reason, the well known names remain hesitant to take advantage of this and grab a slice of the pie.

So what does Amazfit Happy Duck children’s health watch bring?

Unlike some other kids watches, the focus of Amazfit Happy Duck is on sports and fitness. Huang Wang says that this is because the small display of kids watches may lead to eye defects, such as myopia. So instead of games and learning resources we get something aimed at improving health.

Stemming from this is an innovative feature. The device keeps tabs on how much time a kid spends outdoors by analysing sunlight and environmental data. It will then send reminders and suggest a physical activity when your little one is spending a bit too much time indoors.

As the pictures show, this is a robust looking watch that has a IP68 water-resistant rating. There’s a 1.4-inch TFT screen on-board with a resolution of 240×240. Under the hood is Huami’s Huangshan No. 1 AI portable processor and BioTracker PPG high-precision biological tracking sensor.

The weight of the watch is 51.4 grams and the dimensions of the polycarbonate body come in at 43.4 x 16.4 x 231.6 mm. The whole thing is attached to 20mm food-grade straps.

Amazfit Happy Duck comes with a lot of kid-friendly sports and fitness modes. A few on the list are rope skipping, sit-ups and running. There’s also 24 hour heart rate tracking (something not typically seen in a kids watch), an accelerator for steps monitoring, sleep tracking and more. You can also keep tabs on the height and weight of the child, presumably by manually entering these metrics.

Not to be left behind, Amazfit Happy. Duck does offer some kids smartwatch functionality. This includes 4G cellular, AI multi-positioning, a rotating 88 ° wide-angle high-definition camera for taking pics and making video calls, the ability to add contacts, XiaoAI voice support and more. Finally there’s also an SOS button and geofencing that can tap into GPS and Beidou.

All of these internals make the watch pretty battery hungry. Luckily there’s massive 700 mAh battery inside that keeps the gizmo ticking for around 4 days between charges.

The watch can be pre-ordered in China for around $120 in a choice between blue or pink. Actual sales and availability begin on August 18th. Most Amazfit devices have made it across the border so we guess this one will be no exception. No word yet, though, on when that will happen.

Norwegian outfit Playfinity has launched an Indiegogo project this morning to fund Backyard League. Aimed at kids, this is a connected baseball and league designed to encourage young ones to play.

It is fair to say that baseball has been behind the curve when it comes to smart technology for amateurs. There have been a few products but not many and nothing really aimed at kids. The latter is one of the things that makes Backyard League so unique. It is not for adults.

The product has several aspects to it.

For starters, the Bluetooth gaming baseball keeps tabs on catches, drops and other metrics. To this end you can see how you are performing on the field.

But the product goes way beyond simply spitting out performance metrics. It is more about the fun element and encouraging kids to practice, play and spend more time with their friends. And let’s face it, when you’re young that should be what sport is all about – enjoyment rather than anything else.

Essential reading: Swing trainers & other connected tech to up your baseball skills

To this end there are in-app games such as Fast Throw, Pop Fly, Precision Catch and Higher And Higher. These can help kids practice different skills and provide them with feedback on how they are improving. The software generates crowd noises and encouragement so your kids can star in the own baseball game.

As its name implies, the other aspect of Baseball League is competitive in nature. If your little one chooses to participate, there are various global leaderboards they can join. Then they can see how they stack up against others and try to move up the leaderboards. Users can join the competitions safely and anonymously – so no personal details are needed to register.

The baseball itself is MLB regulation size and weight – there is absolutely no difference so 9 inches and 5 ounces. But there is smart tech hidden inside alongside a battery which can keep the thing going for 70 hours between charges. Playfinity says the ball is durable so you need not worry that it will get damaged easily.

To us this sounds like an interesting project. Statistics show that kids are participating in sports less and less. For example, a recent survey by Aspen Institute’s “Project Play” shows that around 38% of kids between 6 and 12 play team sports regularly. This is down 7% from 10 years earlier. Most kids today quit playing a sport by age 11 and that should be a worry.

Are over-zealous parents who are making sports less fun to blame? Perhaps. No doubt, technology is also partly to blame. But perhaps technology has the answer to the problem. Any product that has the potential to reverse a decline in youth sports has our support.

Backyard League is available on Indiegogo from today for a budget-friendly $69. The retail launch is expected by October 1st at which point it will revert to $129.95.
