Fitbit Charge 3

best fitness trackers and health gadgets for 2018 7 - Best fitness trackers and health gadgets for 2018

Fitbit Charge 3 is our pick as the best device for the average person who does the occasional run here and there. The sleek looking fitness band builds on the best-selling Charge 2, and comes in at exactly the same price.

At first glance the Charge 3 comes across very much like its predecesor. But look closely and you’ll spot some important differences. The most obvious is the bigger OLED display. In fact, its 40% larger than on the Charge 2. Furthermore, the high-resolution, backlit screen is fully responsive to touch.

Waterproofing is another important upgrade. Charge 3 has a water-resistance rating of 5 ATM which means you can dunk it down to depths of 50 metres.

Battery life is an excellent 7 days on a single charge. This beats its predecessor by 2 days, allowing it to go 40% longer.

This is a sleek looking device which comes with a great software ecosystem. You’ll find everything you need for 24/7 activity monitoring, and the device will link to the GPS on your smartphone to provide more precise data on pace and distance when you’re running while recording a map of your route in the app.

Last but certainly not least are the smart features. These have progressed so much that they are starting to blend the line between fitness tracker and smartwatch. Charge 3 comes with call, calendar, text and smartphone app notifications. You can accept or reject calls and Android phone users are able to send pre-canned quick replies. There is a host of Fitbit and third-party apps, too. For an additional $20, you can slap on Fitbit Pay to the host of features.

This device can be seen as an upgraded version of the company’s popular Vivosmart 3 and Vivosmart HR+ trackers. In a sense, Garmin has taken the best from these two and come up with an entirely new fitness band. This is also Garmin’s first wristband with a color screen.

Measuring 21mm in width, 10.9mm in thickness and weighing only 27 grams, you’ll hardly notice you are wearing it. It feels great on your wrist, fitting very snuggly.

Despite the slim form-factor, Vivosport has some pretty decent specs under the hood. You’ll get everything you could possibly hope for 24/7 activity tracking, including detailed info on steps, calories, distance, heart rate, activity, floors and sleep. The GPS makes for more precise distance, time and pace tracking, along with route mapping for your runs. It will track your swims in the pool too.

top fitness trackers and health gadgets - Best fitness trackers and health gadgets for 2018

The Forerunner 935 is a fully featured running and triathlon GPS sports watch. You will find the usual Elevate wrist-based heart rate for 24/7 heart rate monitoring, and GPS and GLONASS coverage. Additionally, the wearable sports a barometer, altimeter, and a compass.

Essential reading: Gone for a run – top GPS watches for running and training

Where the watch stands out most though, is in its detailed analysis of performance. According to Garmin, the Forerunner 935 aggregates past training results and then uses that data to evaluate the amount of effort users exert during fitness sessions, i.e. if you are slacking off or overdoing it. It does this through two new additional metrics, training load and training status.

Training load looks at users’ exercise activity over the last seven days and compares it to the optimal range for your fitness and recent training history. Training status does the same thing with a more short-term view, and lets you know if you’re training productively, peaking or overreaching. Additionally, the training effect metric tracks and reviews the aerobic and anaerobic benefit of a training session. There are also other advanced dynamics for running, cycling and swimming, including FTP, VO2 max, cadence and others.

The only negative is the price. On that note, the lower priced Garmin Forerunner 235 is also a great option. In addition to tracking your runs, the gadget will provide you with the recovery advisor and VO2 Max, but you will miss out on the more advanced analysis of the 935.

There are no smartwatches that track blood pressure from the wrist. If Garmin, Fitbit, Apple have not come out with such a device – with millions and millions invested in research each year – other companies are not either – at least not with something that will be clinically precise in its measurements. There are plenty of connected blood pressure monitors that work by inflating the cuff (both from the upper arm and the wrist) – you can check them out here: http://gadgetsandwearables.com/2017/07/20/leading-smart-blood-pressure-monitors/

        Hi Marko

Having reviewed your article, you mentioned that there are no blood pressure wrist monitor.

There are a couple of ones being marketed on Amazon, but i am not sure how accurate they are:
        – Hometec S4
        – Arvin Heart Rate watch
        – NewYes
All the reviews on Amazon these seem to be mixed.

However, Omron who you referenced above seem to be developing a wearable smart watch blood pressure monitor: Project Zero 2.0. According to there website, they are trying to FDA clearance which they indicated might be 2018: https://omronhealthcare.com/generation-zero/

My wife has invested in Quardio Arm, which records all data through an app. Very happy with it, but you still have the faff factor of putting on the sleeve. https://www.getqardio.com/qardioarm-blood-pressure-monitor-iphone-android/

    Hi,

Very informative and helpful site. I really enjoy reading here.

I mostly do light sports (walking, trekking).
In general, is a built-in GPS really necessary for these activities? When I go walking I don’t carry my cellphone (so a cell phone connection won’t be available).

The functions that I think are applicable to me are:
    1. Wrist device
    2. Built-In GPS (when I go walking I don’t carry my cellphone)
    3. Battery life (with/without active GPS)
    4. Android App and how useful is it
    5. Steps
    6. Distance
    7. Calories
    8. Floors
    9. Sleep monitoring
    10. Waterproof/Water resistant
    11. Display size (I prefer medium/small as this won’t be my regular watch)
    12. Clock
    13. Bluetooth
    14. Sunlight visibility

Functionality such as the following is not applicable for me:
    1. Smartphone notifications
    2. Music
    3. Social media/competitions
    4. Multisport

Which of the following models would be the best, given my preferences? (I know that some of them do not have a built-in GPS, I’ve included them in case the best advice here is that ut’s not required).
    TomTom Spark 3 Cardio
    TomTom Spark 3
    Garmin Vivosport
    Huawei Band 2 Pro
    Samsung Gear Fit 2
    Garmin vívoactive HR
    Fitbit Charge 2
    Fitbit Alta HR
    Xiaomi Mi Band 2
    Garmin Vivosmart HR+
    Garmin Vivosmart 3
    Fitbit Flex 2

    Thank you.
    🙂

I think Garmin Vivosport and Vivosmart HR+ are the only ones that tick all the boxes from your wishlist. You don’t really need GPS unless you run on a regular basis – if you leave your phone behind a fitness tracker will still count steps, distance, etc… Therefore you could opt for one without GPS such us Fitbit Charge 2, etc.

Hi, my 14 year old daughter suffers from non eplispy seizures. We are trying to find her a tracker/watch that monitors heart rate & rest mode, sleep, and stress levels(all at the same time). Maybe if we could find a tracker that can do that all at once it may help our doctor figure WTH is going on with her. So far test, after test and no solid answers. We know of the Empatica brand but she doesn’t meet the clinical trial guidelines for seizures monitoring and alerts plus it requires a monthly subscription. Hoping someone can point us in the right direction.

Most of the latest generation of Garmin fitness trackers measure the metrics you mention. Garmin Vivosport for example measures heart rate, sleep, activity, stress 24/7.

There are no smartbands that measure blood pressure. You need to buy a blood pressure monitor.

A company called Veteran Merchandise is claiming to have a Fitness tracker that does it all, including heart rate, blood pressure, and pulse ox. Saw it advertised on Facebook today. I find this implausible, as all the big name companies have yet to introduce these features.
