A tale of two smartwatches: Huawei’s upcoming event

On September 14th, Huawei is set to unveil not one, but two smartwatches at their overseas event in Barcelona. The Chinese tech giant has been tight-lipped about the details but some information has filtered through. Here’s what we know so far about these intriguing wearables.

The known entity: Huawei Watch GT 4

Huawei’s Watch GT 4 has been the subject of speculation for some time. The timepiece will come in a total of nine variants and two sizes, 41mm and 46mm. Prices are expected to range from €249 to €399. The premium model will feature a stainless steel case and wristband, while other variants will offer more basic metal casings and fabric or synthetic bands.

Reports indicate that Watch GT 4 leans more towards being a fitness tracker, equipped with an expanded suite of fitness monitoring features. It’s expected to have a battery lifespan of approximately two weeks, thanks to energy-efficient OLED displays. The watch will run on HarmonyOS 4, promising new watch faces and enhanced touch interactions.

The mysterious companion

Alongside the Watch GT 4, Huawei plans to unveil a second, more mysterious smartwatch. The company has released a teaser image showcasing a partial silhouette of this enigmatic device. It features a black casing adorned with gold accents and a prominent gold triangle scale, adding a touch of luxury.

Which means Huawei is emphasizing forward-looking aesthetics for this unnamed smartwatch. The gold accents and triangle scale suggest that the company is targeting a different market segment, possibly those who prioritize style over functionality.

The high-end luxury smartwatch market is a niche but growing segment. These wearables blend cutting-edge technology with premium materials and sophisticated design, often resembling traditional luxury timepieces. Brands in this space aim to offer a seamless blend of style and utility, often incorporating exclusive features or limited-edition releases to attract discerning buyers. The market is also characterized by higher price points, reflecting the premium components and craftsmanship involved.

Echoes of the Watch Ultimate

The mysterious smartwatch’s luxurious design cues actually remind a bit of Huawei’s Watch Ultimate. Released earlier this year, the Watch Ultimate is a high-end wearable designed for outdoor lovers and divers. It features an LPTO AMOLED screen, a robust 530mAh battery, and a case made from high-end materials like liquid metal and ceramic. The watch also boasts advanced health tracking functions, including ECG and arterial stiffness readings.

While the new mysterious smartwatch is yet to reveal its full feature set, there clearly are aesthetic similarities with Watch Ultimate. However the upcoming device might have a different set of functionalities.

Huawei’s decision to unveil two smartwatches simultaneously is a bold move, signaling their intent to capture a larger share of the wearables market. It also adds an element of intrigue to their upcoming event.

With two smartwatches set to be unveiled, the company is clearly pushing boundaries. Whether these devices will live up to the hype remains to be seen.
