OnePlus Watch 2R: Something for those on a budget

OnePlus is gearing up for the launch of a new smartwatch – the Watch 2R. The company has just teased a full reveal on July 16th, where the timepiece will launch alongside the Nord Buds 3 Pro earphones, the Nord 3 phone and the Pad 2 tablet.

An image of the upcoming device has been posted by the company – you can see at the start of this article. There are also other images (posted below) that have been leaked. Along with the tech specs.

A more budget-friendly iteration

The 2R is a more budget-friendly version of the existing model, rather than a new high-end offering. At around $240, it retails for less than the $299 of its sibling. The company has used the “R” branding before to denote less expensive versions of its existing products.

Released only a few months ago, the OnePlus Watch 2 packs a sleek design crafted from high-quality stainless steel with a vibrant AMOLED display. Below the hood is a powerful dual-engine architecture that optimized performance and battery life through intelligent chipset switching. There is also a comprehensive suite of health and fitness features for monitoring heart rate, blood oxygen, stress, sleep, and more.

OnePlus Watch 2 has garnered attention for its impressive battery life, offering up to 100 hours in smart mode and up to 12 days in power saver mode, dual frequency GPS for enhanced location accuracy during outdoor activities, and access to a wide range of apps and services through Wear OS by Google. The only other wearOS watch that can currently match that sort of battery life is the Mobvoi TicWatch 5 Pro range.

Watch 2R: Technical specs

Some of the cost savings for the 2R have been achieved by simplifying the design. Rather than the lopsided casing, the company has opted for a more standard circular shape. Also, instead of stainless steel, the 2R will have an aluminum build. This means the device is 25% lighter than its predecessor.

The Watch 2R supports 10W fast charging and house a 500 mAh battery. It’s set to offer a comprehensive range of connectivity options, including WCDMA, TD-LTE, LTE FDD, WLAN, and Bluetooth, ensuring versatile communication capabilities.

Under the hood, the Watch 2R is powered by the Snapdragon Wear W5 chipset, working alongside a BES2700 low-power chip for efficient operation. The device sports a 1.43-inch AMOLED touchscreen with a peak brightness of 1,000 nits, promising excellent visibility in various lighting conditions. With 2GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage, the device offers ample space for apps and data.

Battery life is touted as a key feature, with the device reportedly capable of lasting up to 100 hours on a single charge. So just like its big brother.

The Watch 2R also boasts dual-frequency GPS for precise tracking and supports over 100 sport modes. Running on Wear OS, Google’s wearable operating system, the timepiece ensures compatibility with a wide range of apps and services.

The OnePlus Watch 2R carries an IP68 certification for dust and water resistance, with a water resistance rating of 2.5 ATM. This represents a slight downgrade from the Watch 2’s 5 ATM rating.

The bottom line

All of this doesn’t leave much to the imagination ahead of the launch tomorrow. The Watch 2R is positioned as a more affordable alternative in the OnePlus smartwatch lineup, balancing feature set with cost-saving measures. The device will be available in Forest Green and Gunmetal Grey.

  • I’ve owned 3 samsung watches. The active 2 the original and the classic. All except the original have had issues. Back came off the active 2 and the classic kept having a short batter life that I had to reload from factory image. I even made a YouTube video about the factory image reset (not a factory reset. That does NOTHING)
