Garmin has integrated the Run Coach feature into Connect for users in Beta. This update, currently available on select Garmin devices including the Fenix 7 series running software version 18.10 and Forerunners running on 20.15, aims to provide a more flexible and responsive approach to running training.
A replacement for Coach Plans and DSW?
The change-log for the firmware simply states “Integrates the Garmin Run Coach feature into Garmin Connect app.”
So what’s this all about?
Unlike previous versions that relied on pre-programmed plans from specific coaches, this system uses Garmin’s algorithm to create and adjust workouts. The feature can also serve as a replacement for the existing Daily Suggested Workouts (DSW). So you get a more integrated and goal-oriented approach to your training.
You can make plans based on specific race targets or general fitness improvement. These workouts are prepared seven days ahead. They are visible in Coach glance on the watch as well in separate tab in the smarthone app. Users can also create plans for longer distances, including full marathons.
The new Garmin Coach includes adaptive scheduling. This considers factors like sleep and fatigue to adjust workout intensity and timing – on the fly.
Also, users can see workouts in the Garmin Connect app, making it easier to plan their training schedule. The system even incorporates past workouts into new plans, providing a seamless transition for those already following Garmin’s training suggestions.
While the feature shows promise, some users have reported inconsistencies and bugs in the initial Beta release. These include issues with rest day scheduling and discrepancies between chosen preferences and generated plans. Not too surprising as this is an early Beta. Garmin will continue to refine and improve the system in subsequent updates.
How to install
Runners interested in trying the new Garmin Coach should ensure their compatible devices are updated to the latest beta software version. And yes, you do need to be part of the Beta programme. This is an early Beta which means the download has to be initiated manually from your watch.
