Garmin users eye EU push for Apple integration

The EU has issued a warning to Apple, urging the tech giant to open its iOS ecosystem to third-party devices and developers such as Garmin. This move is part of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) compliance efforts.

Currently, Garmin users face several limitations when using their devices with Apple products. While Garmin watches allow iPhone users to receive notifications such as emails, texts, and alerts, the ability to reply is restricted to Android users.

Some Garmin models offer a workaround for iPhonesby allowing them to respond to messages via Siri using the built-in microphone and speaker. However, this is not ideal.

The EU directive

The EU’s directive could potentially require Apple to open access to features like notifications, device pairing, and connectivity. This would allow third-party manufacturers like Garmin to offer a more integrated experience with iPhones. Apple has been given a six-month deadline to address these interoperability concerns, with potential fines of up to 10% of its annual turnover if it fails to comply.

Another key area where Garmin wearables face restrictions with iOS is LTE/cellular integration. It remains to be seen whether Apple will allow Garmin smartwatches to share the same phone number as an iPhone. It might be nice preparation before we finally see a fully fledged Garmin smartwatch with cellular.

The potential outcomes of this EU directive could be far-reaching for both Garmin and Apple users. Apple has previously shown willingness to loosen certain restrictions, such as granting NFC access, which suggests that further changes may be on the horizon.

User reaction

User reactions on social media to this development have been mixed. Many express support for the EU’s stance, viewing it as a necessary step to protect consumer interests and foster innovation. Some hope this will lead to enhanced integration between Garmin devices and Apple’s Health app.

However, concerns have been raised about potential regional limitations. Some users worry that Apple might create a segregated system, offering more openness in the EU while maintaining restrictions elsewhere. This has led to calls for similar regulatory actions in other regions, particularly the United States.

Garmin users have long expressed frustration with the limited integration between their devices and iPhones. Many are hoping for improvements in notification management, allowing for more fine-tuned control over which alerts appear on their Garmin devices. There’s also a strong desire for Apple Music and Apple Pay functionality to be available on Garmin smartwatches.
