Polar shuts down login features amid cybersecurity concerns

Polar is currently grappling with, what appears to be, a hacking incident affecting its United States online store. The company has reported various levels of disruption to its e-commerce platform.

The data breach seems limited in scope, with hackers accessing a small fraction of customers in Polar’s US online store. The company emphasises that no other customer data, including the data of Polar Flow users, was compromised and remains secure.

Polar believes that the user information associated with these fraudulent accounts likely originated from an external customer database. So not from Polar’s own systems. In a statement, the company says it is working diligently alongside a service provider to uncover the full extent and nature of the cybersecurity attack.

As a precautionary measure, Polar has temporarily disabled the login and registration functions for all its online stores. But you can still make purchases through the guest user option. This does not require logging in.

Further investigation ongoing

A thorough investigation is underway, involving various experts and authorities. Polar has promised to keep its US online store customers informed through direct communication and will provide updates as the investigation progresses.

For now, Polar advises that no immediate action is required from users, as the sign-in and registration functions have been deactivated. Customers can continue to make purchases safely as guest users.

This incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by companies in protecting customer data in the digital age. It brings to mind a similar situation from a few years ago when Garmin experienced a significant cyberattack that affected its website and services. That one left the company and its customers in limbo for a few days before things returned back to normal. This incident seems to be more limited in scope.
