Redmi expands smartwatch lineup with Watch 5 eSIM

Redmi has officially launched the Watch 5 series, adding a new wearable to its product lineup. The device features a large display and includes an eSIM-enabled version, offering better connectivity options for potential buyers.

Large display, more premium design

While maintaining a familiar design language with previous models, the Redmi Watch 5 distinguishes itself through its substantial 2.07-inch 60Hz AMOLED display (432 x 514 pixels). The screen’s generous proportions for a wrist-worn device are immediately striking, offering more visual real estate than many competitors.

With an exceptional 1500 nits of brightness and an expansive 82% screen-to-body ratio, the display should deliver a clear and engaging visual experience. The bezels around the edges are a mere millimeters thick, which helps to create a modern, minimalist look.

Available in a choice between white and black, the 5 ATM watch’s design language speaks of refinement. Its high-quality aluminium frame is coupled with an elegant stainless steel rotating crown that adds a touch of sophistication to its aesthetic. Worth noting is that the eSIM version is slightly thicker at 12 instead of 11.3 millimeters and heavier at 35.9 grams to 2.4 grams.

Under the hood

Under the hood, the Redmi Watch 5 runs on Xiaomi’s HyperOS 2. This lightweight operating system can manage notifications, track time, and control smart home devices through a single, streamlined interface. The system has an expanded app library, with nine native applications and support for third-party apps.

Also worth a mention is the innovative “focused notifications” feature. It curates digital interactions, helping users maintain productivity by minimizing distractions. Smart device integration enables contactless payments, smart home control (control home lighting, adjust thermostats), and smart car key functionality.

Users can personalize the watch face and track physical activities with reasonable detail (150 sports modes, 24-hour heart rate, SpO2, stress, sleep, activity, built-in GNSS). The company says a new AFE chip ensures improved heart rate accuracy.

Battery life is a highlight. The vanilla variant of the device allows for 24 days between charges thanks to a 550mAh battery. This comes down a bit with the eSIM version. In standard mode, that one is good for around 12 days, which is also pretty decent. Worth noting is that this is not a classic SIM card that is used, but a digital SIM card. It allows for standalone calls, SMS messaging and 25 hours of continuous walkie-talkie speaking.

Our takeaway

Contextualizing this release, the Watch 5 represents Redmi’s third smartwatch iteration this year. Earlier models like the Watch 5 Lite and Watch 5 Active demonstrated the company’s commitment to offering diverse options across different price points and feature sets. The Lite model impressed with its GNSS module and extensive training modes, while the Active version emphasized fitness tracking and smart integrations like Alexa.

The new Watch 5 series was made official in China today priced at 799 yuan ($110) for the Sim version. Sounds very reasonable considering the build and features. Alongside the smartwatch, other products were unveiled, such as the Redmi K80 smartphones and Redmi Buds 6 Pro earbuds. The non-Sim version sells for 599 yuan ($82).

Looking through the specs, it’s clear that Redmi Watch 5 offers incremental improvements over its predecessors. Its display is better, with increased screen size and brightness that improve visibility across different lighting environments. Reduced bezel width and an improved screen-to-body ratio contribute to a more contemporary aesthetic.

Structural upgrades include an aluminum body and stainless steel crown, which provide a more refined build quality. Battery performance and feature set have been refined, addressing limitations in earlier models.
