Global rollout of Harmony OS 5 begins for Watch GT 4

Huawei has started rolling out the HarmonyOS 5.0 update to its Watch GT 4. At 328 MB, this update (version 5.0.0.36) is now reaching users globally, although the release is staggered, meaning not everyone will get it at the same time.

Some GT 4 owners in Europe have confirmed receiving the update, but others are still waiting. This rollout builds on Huawei’s December Harmony OS 5 updates for other devices, including the Watch Fit 3 and Watch Ultimate.

What’s new in HarmonyOS 5.0 for the Watch GT 4

The update introduces a more visually engaging and user-friendly interface, alongside several handy tools. Two new watch faces—Route Beam and Eternal Moment—offer users more customization options, while optimized activity rings with four switchable watch faces provide flexibility for tracking goals. There’s also a new offline map feature, allowing users to manage maps and navigate during workouts without having to reach for their phone.

Fitness features get a notable boost as well. Wrist-based running form analysis is now supported, offering advanced metrics like ground contact time and vertical oscillation. This could help users fine-tune their running technique while minimizing injury risks. Cyclists aren’t left out either, with the update adding a workout linking feature for real-time data syncing between the watch and Huawei phones during rides.

Quality-of-life improvements include a calculator app, the ability to quickly log meal calories through Stay Fit, and an updated notification system. Notifications are now easier to track, while adjustments to alarm volume and multi-alarm clearing simplify daily use. Overall system performance gets a lift too, with smoother transitions and more accurate health data tracking.

Anticipation and skepticism in equal measure

While the feature list is impressive, the rollout process itself has drawn some criticism. Many users are eager to try out the new software, but the staggered release schedule means they may be waiting weeks for their turn. This has left some questioning Huawei’s communication about updates and whether these changes are worth the wait.

For now, Huawei Watch GT 4 owners will need to keep an eye on their devices and the Huawei Health app for the update notification. With its mix of fitness enhancements and interface tweaks, HarmonyOS 5.0 is certainly a step forward. But you may need to exercise patience until it reaches you.
