Huawei Watch Ultimate 2 pushes deeper with sonar messaging
Huawei has launched the Watch Ultimate 2, updating the 2023 version. This is a premium dive smartwatch that introduces underwater sonar communication and an extended 11-day battery life. The device doubles as a smartwatch-style dive computer.
Built for the deep
Right off the bat, the standout feature of the Watch Ultimate 2 is Huawei’s new sonar-based diver-to-diver messaging system. It allows users to send preselected messages or emojis to nearby divers up to 30 metres away. The communication happens directly between watches without the need for any tank-mounted transmitter. An SOS mode can also relay emergency alerts through another connected device, extending the range to 60 metres. So that’s some pretty cool stuff.
The watch supports freediving, recreational, and technical diving and is rated for depths up to 150 metres. Huawei has implemented the trusted Bühlmann ZHL-16C decompression algorithm with gradient factors to manage dive safety. It means divers can rely on accurate decompression guidance familiar from dedicated dive computers.
The zirconium-based liquid metal case and sapphire glass screen add durability, while the dual-colour nanocrystal ceramic bezel gives it a distinctive look. The 1.5-inch AMOLED display has a resolution of 466 by 466 pixels and a brightness of 3500 nits, ensuring visibility even in low-light underwater conditions. Dive data is colour-coded so that warnings appear in yellow and red as safety limits approach.
Features above the surface
Once back on land, the Watch Ultimate 2 works as a full-featured smartwatch. It supports phone-free eSIM cellular communication, meaning you can make and receive calls directly from your wrist. The watch includes an ‘Expedition Mode’ for outdoor adventures such as hiking or climbing, complete with altitude adaptation tracking and fall detection. There is also a ‘Golf Course Mode’ with digital scorecards, course maps and ball tracking through the Huawei Health app.
Health tracking is handled by Huawei’s TruSense system with X-TAP technology, covering 11 key wellness metrics such as continuous heart rate, SpO₂, sleep analysis, and stress levels. Data can be synced to the Huawei Health app for deeper insights.
Connectivity, battery life, and pricing
For navigation, Huawei uses its Sunflower positioning system with dual-band, five-satellite coverage, enhanced by a new Gap Antenna design for stronger signals. Bluetooth 5.4 support and AI-based noise suppression improve communication and call clarity. The built-in E-Wallet feature adds contactless payment support, and users can access a small suite of apps, including fitness, music, and even games.
Battery performance depends on how it’s used. The 867 mAh cell can last up to 18 hours in dive mode, around 4.5 days under normal Android use, or 3.5 days when paired with an iPhone. In power-saving mode, it stretches to 11 days. That’s impressive for a device offering such a wide mix of health, diving, and communication tools.
The watch comes in two models: a Black version measuring 48.5 mm across and 12.9 mm thick, along with a slightly smaller Blue version at 47.8 mm. The Blue edition retails for £899.99, while the Black version is priced at £799.99 on Huawei’s website. Early buyers before November 4 receive a complimentary pair of Huawei FreeBuds Pro 4 earbuds and a three-year warranty extension.
