Wyze has launched its latest smart scale, the Scale Ultra, featuring a sizeable 4.3-inch color TFT display that puts vital health metrics front and center. The new device builds upon previous Wyze scale offerings whilst keeping things affordable.

The most notable addition, this time around is the bright, large display that shows health metrics as well as trending data directly on the scale itself. This reduces the need to check your phone for updates.

Users can track 13 different body composition measurements, including standard metrics like weight and body fat percentage, as well as more detailed data points such as visceral fat, metabolic age, and protein levels.

Where many smart scales rely solely on Bluetooth connectivity, the Scale Ultra supports both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connections. So this is a nice plus. This dual-connectivity approach means your data will transfer even without a phone nearby. It takes the hassle out of syncing.

Essential reading: Top fitness trackers and health gadgets

The scale throws in some specialized settings. For example, a pregnancy mode disables bioelectric impedance analysis for safety. Also, there are separate modes for babies, pets, and luggage expand its utility beyond personal health tracking. The device can automatically recognize up to eight different users and includes a guest mode for occasional visitors.

Integration with major health platforms is there. The scale plays nice with Apple Health, Google Fit, and Fitbit, making it a practical choice for users already using these platforms.

Built with ITO-coated glass and anti-slip feet, the Scale Ultra comes in both black and white options. It operates on four AAA batteries with an expected battery life of nine months and can handle weights from 11 to 400 pounds.

The company is known for churning out products that won’t break the bank. The Wyze Scale Ultra is along these lines with a price point of $43.99 through the company’s website. It doesn’t bring any ground-breaking features, but it does seem to offer a lot for the money.

Whoop has officially launched its body composition tracking feature. This app update, which we accurately predicted in an article about a month ago, represents an interesting expansion of Whoop’s health monitoring capabilities.

As we anticipated, the company has implemented integration with third-party smart scales. The new feature allows users to track weight, as well as changes in muscle mass and body fat (depending on the scale that you own). This addition complements Whoop’s existing metrics on sleep, strain, and recovery, providing users with a more complete view of their health and fitness progress.

How to connect your smart scale to Whoop

Whoop’s body composition tracking supports data input from various sources. Users can connect Withings scales, Apple Health, or Google Health Connect to automatically sync their data. So if you don’t have a Withings scale, make sure your other scale posts to Apple Health or the Google platform.

For those with a dumb (traditional) scale, manual entry is also an option. This ensures the feature is accessible to all users regardless of their equipment.

I am a happy owner of both Whoop and the Withings Body Scan scale. Connecting the two took only a few minutes and all the data from my Withings account quickly found its way to the Whoop smartphone app.

Simply go to More > Integrations and find Withings. Then its just a matter of entering your Withings user name and password and approving the connection.

Short and long-term trends

Once the data is ported over (which is very quick), Whoop offers trend analysis for lean body mass and weight over weekly, monthly, and 6-month periods. One of the key strengths of this update is its integration with Whoop’s existing metrics. Users can now see how changes in body composition relate to other factors such as sleep quality, resting heart rate, and heart rate variability. This provides a more nuanced understanding of overall health and fitness.

Whoop has also included some customization options in this update. Users can choose to highlight lean body mass or weight metrics on their Whoop Home view, allowing them to focus on the data most relevant to their personal goals.

The integration with Withings Body Scan scale is particularly noteworthy, as it allows for the import of detailed segmental body composition data. As mentioned, some of the other integrations only allow for syncing of weight.

Essential reading: WHOOP 4.0 – train like the pros

Whoop emphasizes the connection between balanced body composition and health benefits, including reduced risks of chronic diseases, cardiovascular issues, and type 2 diabetes. This approach aligns with the platform’s focus on overall health and wellness, not just physical performance.

All in all, this is not a groundbreaking – but it is a welcome update – that represents a natural progression of the Whoop platform. The addition of body composition tracking provides yet another tool for tweaking performance and overall health. It allows for more targeted training and recovery strategies, based on a more complete understanding of the body’s composition and how it changes over time.

In this article we provide an overview of smart scales that work with Garmin Connect. You don’t necessarily have to opt for a Garmin-made scale. There are some third-party solutions such as Withings, Fitbit, Wyze that you can connect indirectly to your Garmin account. So your options may not be as limited as you may have thought.

Garmin scales

Garmin Connect and the web-dashboard provide a detailed overview of your fitness tracker and smartwatch stats. You can also connect other equipment to the platform such as smart scales. This results in a more holistic overview of your health and fitness stats. The ability to see your activity stats alongside your weight and body composition is very useful.

Essential reading: The best smart scales: keep tabs on your weight and body composition

The easiest and safest solution, of course, is to opt for a Garmin scale. This will work seamlessly as it is built to communicate with the company’s smartphone app.

There are a couple of products you can choose from including the first and second generation of the Index scale. We suggest going for the latest edition. The S2 comes with a number of upgrades on the S1 scale, including a sleeker design and bright LCD colour display, along with enhanced accuracy of sensors.

Mind you, both generations will spit out information on weight, body mass index (BMI), body fat, water percentage, bone mass and skeletal muscle mass. So you’ll be covered whichever you choose. Plus you should be able to pick up some nice discounts on the S1. But the S2 is more accurate and comes with some nice extras so we suggest going for that one.

To use a Garmin scale you’ll need to connect it. Fortunately, this is very easy. The process consists of:

Going to www.garminconnect.com/indexscale.

Selecting Mobile or WPS. The first allows you to setup the scale via the Garmin Connect mobile app. The second lets you set it up through a WPS-enabled Wi-Fi router. The mobile option is probably easier.

Then its simply a matter of following the on-screen instructions on the computer or smartphone app to configure the device so that it syncs to your Garmin account.

As mentioned, the Index S1 and S2 are the only scales that work natively with Garmin Connect. They are pretty straightforward devices that don’t go much beyond the basics. We have not had any word on the S3. But don’t be surprised if that one lands in the near future as the S2 is nearly 3 years old now.

But there are workarounds that allow you to link up third-party scales.

Third-party scales that work with Garmin Connect

If you don’t want a Garmin scale, we suggest going for one made by Withings. The French-based outfit is the leader when it comes to innovative smart scales. You might even say it is in a league of its own on this count.

Its product range has some of the most advanced tech you can find on the market. The scales work well and you won’t need to replace them after a year or two. One of the most high-specs of the bunch is the Withings Cardio. In addition to weight and body composition, that one also does a mini heart assesment each time you step on it.

If you want absolutely the best the company has on offer, then check the Body Scan. We published our hands on review of this device a few months back. It even tracks segmental body composition, metabolic assessment and heart health. There’s even an ECG monitor on-board that checks for potential heart rhythm irregularities.

How to sync a Withings scale to Garmin Connect

The bad news is that you cannot connect a Withings scale directly to Garmin Connect. The good news is that you can do this through myfitnesspal. Simply open a myfitnesspal account and link up both your Withings and Garmin account to it. The connection works flawlessly. If there is a glitch and the data stops syncing, simply disconnect/reconnect your Garmin account to myfitnesspal.

I used this solution to connect my Withings scale a few years ago. It was a 10 minute process and the connection has been working perfectly since then.

Mind you, only your weight will come through to Garmin Connect but you can always use the Withings Health app to check the other stats. The important thing is for the weight to come through. Because that is really all that you need as far as the Garmin software is concerned.

It’s worth mentioning – if you’re not going for the Garmin Index, no other scale will bring body composition stats into Garmin Connect. There’s a long-running thread on the Withings forums to bring a direct connection to Garmin Connect. But that’s unlikely to happen.

Other smart scales that work with Garmin Connect

In addition to Withings, you can sync other scales to myfitnesspall and than to Garmin. This includes Fitbit scales although we do not really see a reason for someone to purchase a Fitbit scale to work with Garmin as there is little difference between the two. But there are some inexpensive options you might want to opt for such as Renpho smart scales, Weight Gurus scales, Wyze scales and a few others.

Finally, if you don’t want to use the myfitnesspal route, another solution is to link up your accounts via smartscalesync.com. But that does require you to pay a $15 per year fee. The benefit of that type of connection is that this will sync more than just your weight to Garmin Connect. You can sync pretty much everything – including fat, muscle, water, bone, etc (depending on what metrics your smart scale tracks).

Want to go beyond simple weight tracking and get an in-depth look at your body’s health? Amazfit has just launched its Body Composition Analyzer Mat in France and Italy, and it’s designed to help you understand your fitness.

What information does it provide?

The Amazfit Body Composition Analyzer Mat utilizes cutting-edge Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA). This established method sends safe, low-level electrical currents through the body to estimate various health metrics. While BIA offers valuable insights, it’s important to acknowledge that its accuracy can be influenced by factors like hydration levels and recent meals.

Unlike a typical smart scale you won’t get your weight. But the mat unlocks a wealth of information including:

Body Fat Percentage: Get a clearer picture of your overall health beyond just weight.

Muscle Mass: Build strength and track your training progress.

Water Percentage: Understand your hydration levels, crucial for performance.

Bone Mass: Monitor skeletal health.

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR): Discover how many calories you burn at rest, tailoring your diet accordingly.

And more!

It only works with the Amazfit Balance watch

What you will need, in order for this to work, is an Amazfit Balance watch. The timepice already measures these metrics for your upper body, and now the mat tackles the lower body. The mat actually plugs into the watch via the charging unit! By combining data from the smartwatch with measurements from the mat, a more holistic picture of body composition emerges.

All of this information flows straight into the accompanying app. You’ll see clear visuals of your body composition, how it’s trending over time, and tailored recommendations for improvement.

We previously wrote a detailed piece on how to take a body composition reading on the Amazfit Balance watch. The jist of it is that you first need to ensure you have updated your personal information in the Zepp smartphone app. Clean the watch’s buttons and electrodes and make sure the watch fits snugly on your wrist, about a finger’s width from your wrist bone.

Next, find the Body Composition app on your watch and confirm that your weight information is accurate. Stand tall with your arms raised, then extend the arm wearing the watch forward with your palm facing upwards. Place your middle and ring fingers on the watch’s two side buttons, ensuring your hands or arms don’t touch each other. Remain still for a few seconds as the watch completes the reading. Your results will be displayed on the watch and can also be viewed in the Zepp app.

Price and availability

Currently available in France and Italy for €39.90, the Body Composition Analyzer Mat’s limited distribution strategy might restrict wider accessibility for the time being. Additionally, while the product offers enhanced tracking capabilities, Amazfit clarifies that it’s not a medical device.

Essential reading: Top fitness trackers and health gadgets

We’re on the fence about this product. It sounds intriguing, and the price is reasonable. However, at price point you could get a basic smart scale. In fact, Zepp Health sells an Amazfit smart scale that is in that price range. The Analyzer Mat’s main advantage seems to be its portability – you can easily fold it and pack it for travel. Beyond that, though, it’s unclear what significant benefits it offers compared to existing smart scales.

Withings Health Solutions has quietly launched the Body 2 Pro scale, a device that can help in early detection of diabetes complications. Unlike most other scales produced by the Withings brand, this one requires a subscription.

The French outfit is well known for its excellent range of smart scales. In fact, it’s fair to say the company is in a league of its own in this space. Their product range, known for seamlessly integrating into daily life, has helped demystify health monitoring for the general public.

We recently published our hands-on review of Body Scan. Think of it as the Apple of smart scales, a device that screams quality and advanced tech. This thing is like a mini health station right in your bathroom. It looks cool too, with a sleek glass platform and a handy handlebar that’s not just for show. It actually boosts its ability to measure all sorts of health stats. Plus, the scale is super easy to keep connected with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. And the battery life is awesome, lasting a whole year on a single USB-C charge.

What’s particularly impressive, though, is what this scale can do. It dives deep with metrics like segmental body composition, how your metabolism is doing, and even keeps an eye on your heart with its ECG monitor. This is the kind of scale you want if you’re serious about tracking your health. It’s got the looks, the brains, and the performance.

The Body Pro 2: Modular design, cellular connectivity & more

The company’s new offering comes as we observe World Diabetes day. A fitting opportunity to launch this device as it has some specialised capabilities.

Withings Body Pro 2

At its core, the Body Pro 2 is a cellular-connected smart scale designed to aid healthcare providers in managing chronic conditions. The scale’s debut module focuses on diabetic foot health, a critical but often overlooked aspect of diabetes care. By monitoring Electrochemical Skin Conductance (ESC), it offers early detection of Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathies (DPN) and assesses the risk of diabetic foot ulcers.

Its other key features include:

Advanced health metrics: The scale provides accurate measurements of weight, BMI, and body composition, including fat, muscle mass, water percentage, and bone mass.

Modular design: This is the first Withings smart scale with a modular design, allowing for the addition of health modules to monitor specific health concerns.

Cellular connectivity: The Body Pro 2 includes cellular connectivity, enabling it to transmit data directly to healthcare teams without the need for patient setup.

Health nudges: A unique feature that allows healthcare professionals to send reminders to patients for health-related actions, such as medication intake or blood pressure checks.

User-friendly design: The scale is designed with grip feet for stability, high-precision sensors, and gravity compensation to provide accurate readings regardless of geographic location.

The big picture

You won’t find the Withings Body Pro 2 scale in regular stores, as it’s specially crafted for healthcare professionals. This scale is part of the Withings Health Solutions lineup, a dedicated branch of Withings focusing on medical-grade technology. This means its use is restricted to patients who are under medical supervision, so it’s not readily available for the average consumer.

Essential reading: Withings Body Scan review – a symphony of health metrics

But a few interesting things to observe here, which might be a sign of things to come. The scale’s ability to assist in managing chronic conditions is a standout feature. This might eventually find its way into consumer products. If this happens, it could significantly enhance the usefulness of personal health gadgets. Of course, there will be regulatory hurdles to overcome. Beyond that, the modular approach of the Body Pro 2 is particularly noteworthy. It opens the door to a future where personalized health products are more accessible and adaptable to individual needs.

This article is our roundup of the best smart scales you can buy in 2024. Use one of these to track your weight, body composition and more.

Smart scales connect wirelessly to your smartphone, tablet or computer to fitness apps. Step on one of these, and your weight data will magically find its way to a corresponding software on your mobile device or a Web dashboard. Using the app or dashboard, you can then track your progress over time which should help you make healthy choices as far as diet and exercise.

Scales that also measure body fat and other advanced metrics do this by sending a low electrical current through one foot and reading the current with a sensor under the other foot. The current passes through fat more slowly so the scale calculates the amount of resistance to come up with a body fat percentage. This is often referred to as bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA).

Essential reading: Top fitness trackers and health gadgets

Consumer Reports tested six popular bathroom scales a while ago and came to the conclusion that while they were all excellent at measuring body weight, none were particularly accurate when it came to measuring body fat. But they were consistent which means the scales can be used to track relative gains and losses over time as they are comparing like with like.

This doesn’t really come as much of a surprise. The accuracy of body fat and other more exotic measurements such as visceral fat, body water, protein, lean body mass leaves a bit to be desired. These are estimates rather than something that is measured precisely. Hence, many of us have learned to ignore them. The readings are more a nice-to-have rather than something that should be religiously followed. At least until accuracy of such measurements on these types of devices improves. Which will come.

Generally, we can separate smart scales into two camps. The ones that come from well known brands such as Fitbit, Withings and Garmin, and the dozens and dozens of scales released by the lesser known companies. These are generally cheaper, but in many cases also less precise. This article focuses on the more established brands. In our mind, paying a bit more extra is worth it as you get a better quality product, advanced software and more accurate readings

The best smart scales of 2023 – here’s our pick

Withings Body Smart

Let’s cut to the chase right away. Scales produced by Withings are our pick of the bunch. They look great and do the job extremely well. There are several options you can choose from.

One of these is the Body Smart scale. As noted in our hands-on review, the gadget stands out for its cost-effectiveness, feature set, and reliability. Once set up, Body Smart requires minimal attention, save for routine weigh-ins. It offers an array of health-related metrics, impressing especially with its weight measurements, accurate to two decimal places.

The aesthetic of the scale is contemporary and clean, enhancing the user experience. Its interface is intuitive, and the multiple modes it offers are tailored to meet diverse requirements. The scale’s multi-user capability also makes it an excellent option for household use.

Though it may lack some of the advanced features found in pricier models, the Body Smart scale excels in essential areas. It serves as a dependable, precise, and user-friendly instrument for those keen on monitoring their health metrics.

If you love gadgets and find tracking your weight useful to help you diet or maintain a healthy weight, you won’t go wrong with the Body Smart. This is a quality product that comes at a reasonable price.

Amazon | Withings*

Withings Body Scan

Another smart scale that we reviewed recently, the Withings Body Scan scale transcends the role of a mere weighing apparatus. It positions itself as an all-encompassing health hub that delivers an extensive range of metrics for wellness monitoring. Priced at $399.95, this is not a casual purchase, but it offers value for those committed to in-depth health tracking.

Aesthetically, the scale marries form with function, boasting a robust tempered glass surface and a handlebar that elevates both its design and measurement capabilities. Seamless connectivity is ensured through Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, allowing for effortless data synchronization. Battery longevity is another strong point, with a single charge lasting up to a year and recharging facilitated through a standard USB-C cable.

When it comes to precision and dependability, the Withings Body Scan scale is designed to excel. It goes beyond mere weight measurement to provide a comprehensive set of metrics such as segmental body composition, metabolic evaluations, and cardiac health indicators. The built-in ECG monitor is especially significant, acting as a preliminary alert system for potential heart rhythm anomalies.

For those in search of a smart scale that offers more than basic weight metrics, the Withings Body Scan scale stands alone in its capabilities. Its broad range of features, reliable performance, and sophisticated design make it a worthy investment for individuals serious about health and well-being.

Long overdue for an update, the original Aria scale was released back in April 2012. At the time, it was one of only a handful of connected scales on the market.

Aria 2 was introduced a couple of years ago. It has a fresh design and a few other updates, but its core features remain largely the same. This means the scale tracks weight, BMI, body fat percentage, with now the addition of lean mass. Just like its predecessor, it can recognise up to 8 users and you can set weight goals with a daily calorie plan, log food and other workouts.

Fitbit says its much easier than before to set up the new scale and you can do it over the smartphone using the app. It also offers more accurate readings.

If you’re looking to lose weight or just keep tabs on your current weight, this scale makes a good choice. Particularly if you own a Fitbit fitness tracker or smartwatch as it makes sense to buy from the same brand. It is simple to use. Your weight is transferred to your Fitbit dashboard so that it sits there along with all your other stats.

Garmin is also on the second generation of its scale. The Index S2 is the successor to Garmin’s original S1 scale. Overall, the S2 comes with some nice new upgrades.

The S2 has a sleeker design then its predecessor and bright LCD colour display whilst retaining the same 9 month battery life. You also get enhanced accuracy of sensors and some useful features which allow you to follow your trends without reaching for the smartphone app.

Both generations dish out info on weight (lbs, kg, st), body mass index (BMI), body fat, water percentage, bone mass and skeletal muscle mass. If you don’t want to be bothered with the other metrics, the S2 allows you to choose a weight only option. It also allows for customisation of widgets.

If you are the owner of other Garmin devices you might want to opt for this one due to easy integration with the Garmin Connect app. You can also check out our separate piece with a detailed comparison between the S2 and S1 scale.

It’s worth noting – these scales are the only body composition monitors that are integrated directly into the Garmin ecosystem of products. You can connect other products such as the Withings scale by using workarounds such as third party apps. One of the often used ones is Myfitnesspal.

Perhaps not as feature rich as some of the other connected scales, the Xiaomi scale sells at about half the price of the leading brands.

The device tracks weight and BMI, and connects via Bluetooth to Xiaomi’s Mi Fit iOS and Android apps, so you can track your weight over time. It is capable of managing the weight of up to 16 people with its app, so its suitable for the whole family.

There are 161 LEDs which light up to show your weight. The overall body of the scale has a smooth design and round edges, and is protected by tempered glass panels. The display itself is embedded into the body.

This is a great product, particularly when you factor in the low price. If you own other Xiaomi products such as a smartwatch or fitness band, it makes sense to purchase from the same brand.

Once you have customised the settings in your profile, the app and web service will provide you with motivational guidance on how to reach your daily activity goal. The app works on the basis that 60% of the excess calories should be cut from your diet and 40% should be burned with activity.

Daily activities such as steps, distance and calories are recorded from one of Polar’s fitness trackers (if you own one), and the food intake you will need to record manually. A interesting aspect is the beautifully designed Weight Loss Speedometer.
The second generation QardioBase retains the signature circular “floating” look of its predecessor but enhances it with a wider base for added stability. The screen is brighter and crisper and there is a better haptic engine installed.

Qardio says it has enhanced the sensor system and introduced new and improved algorithms. This means your weight, body mass index and body composition (% muscle, fat, water, bone) measurements will be more accurate than before. There is also a unique Pregnancy Mode which helps expecting moms safely track their progress during this happy time and beyond.

Fitbit’s most recent scale is designed to be light on your wallet. It only retails for $49.95 on the company’s website. That is less than half of what you’d pay for its more expensive siblings!

You sacrifice some of the functionality, for the lower price. There’s only Bluetooth sync (so no wi-fi connectivity) and the scale only captures info on weight and body mass index (BMI). And that’s pretty much where it ends. It’s a no-nonsense device which spits out the essentials. The more expensive Aria scales also track body fat percentage and lean mass, hence the higher price.

Design-wise, the scale does not stray too much from other offerings in the Aria range. It features a simple square-ish design that comes in a choice between White or Black. The LCD display is still there although it now lacks the metal ring around it.

Aira Air is great if you are looking for a budget smart scale that is user friendly and that integrates into the Fitbit app and platform of products. You step on it, step off – done. The scale plays nice with Fitbit’s Premium Subscription service, you can set goals, follow weight trends, connect to third party apps and access the Community section for support from other Fitbit users and bragging rights.

Withings Body Cardio

Body Cardio is another scale from French-based Withings. The device looks great, plus you get a host of data some of which is to do with your heart health. One of these metrics is called Pulse Wave Velocity (PWV).

This is info that cannot be found on any other smart scale. It measures arterial stiffness by calculating the time it takes for the pressure wave generated by the heart to travel along the arterial tree and reach your feet. The resulting value can be useful in assessing your risk of having or developing hypertension. Faster speeds indicate stiffer arteries.

The company has also introduced a new Vascular Age metric. It builds on PWV to provide users an even easier way of understanding their heart health. It does this by taking the readings and comparing them to people your age and physical characteristics.

Beyond that you get everything you can wish from a scale and more. What sets this scale apart from the competition is the variety of health data it records. As well as standard weight, BMI and fat percentage figures, every time you step on the scale you get a host of other data including a mini heart health assessment. This is plenty for most people.

In our testing we were very impressed with the Body Cardio. From setup that went without a hitch, to ease of use, to use of data – it simply does the job. An example of how all smart home health appliances should be.

Step aside, traditional bathroom scales; there’s a new maestro in town, and it’s conducting an orchestra of metrics that Mozart would envy. The Withings Body Scan scale has landed on US soil a few weeks ago, and it’s not just here to tell you how many holiday pounds you’ve gained. Oh no, this French virtuoso is a health concierge, a weatherman, and a fitness coach all rolled into a sleek glass platform that even James Bond would give a nod of approval.

You might be thinking, “A scale that does more than just weigh me? Preposterous!” But hold onto your skepticism. This isn’t your run-of-the-mill smart scale; it’s a multitasker that juggles everything from your weight to your segmental body composition, and even throws in the day’s weather and air quality for good measure. And let’s not forget its battery life, which outlasts most New Year’s resolutions.

But before you reach for your wallet, be warned: this scale comes with a $399.95 price tag (check price on Withings / Amazon). Yet, considering it’s the world’s first health station to receive FDA clearance for detecting atrial fibrillation through a 6-lead ECG, perhaps it’s worth every penny.

So, is this the scale that finally bridges the gap between health and home? Stick around as I delve into its features, accuracy, and whether it’s worth the investment.

Withings Body Scan review: Design and build quality

Look & feel

The Withings Body Scan Scale is a study in modern, minimalist design that effortlessly blends functionality with aesthetics. Its high-strength tempered glass platform is a sleek, reflective surface that adds a touch of elegance to any room. The glass is not just for show; it’s a durable material that can withstand the rigors of daily use. The scale’s compact dimensions of 12.8 x 12.8 x 1.1 inches make it easy to place in any corner of your home, from the bathroom to the bedroom, without it feeling obtrusive.

One thing I’ve noticed is that at 4.8 kgs, the scale’s weight is more substantial than its sleek design might suggest. This heft might be a nod to the advanced technology packed inside, but it’s something to consider if you plan to relocate the scale often. Additionally, while the glass surface adds a touch of elegance, it’s worth noting that it can show smudges.

The handlebar, positioned at the top, extends upward when pulled. It serves both a functional and aesthetic purpose, elevating the scale’s capabilities while adding a modern, clinical flair to its appearance. Although the scale shares visual similarities with other Withings models, it’s the handle that sets it apart, signaling that this scale offers something more.

The high-resolution LCD color screen is a focal point of the scale’s design. Measuring 2.8 inches with a pixel resolution of 320 x 240, the display is crisp and clear. What I like is that when it’s off, you can’t even tell that it is there. It’s embedded seamlessly into the glass platform, maintaining the scale’s clean lines and minimalist appeal.

While the scale is a technological marvel, its design ensures that it doesn’t scream “gadget.” There’s a timeless quality to its appearance, making it a device that you won’t mind keeping out as a permanent fixture in your living space.

Under the hood

At the heart of this health station lies its patented Position Control technology, employing four weight sensors to ensure highly accurate weigh-ins.

The handlebar, equipped with electrodes, plays a crucial role in capturing 6-lead ECGs, tests commonly conducted in medical settings to monitor heart electrical activity. Frequent ECGs enhance the likelihood of identifying and recording atrial fibrillation, a prevalent arrhythmia that, if undetected, could result in severe cardiac issues.

Additionally, the handlebar enables detailed segmental body composition analysis. You get specific data on fat and muscle content in the torso, legs, and arms. The scale conducts a full-body scan, sending a current from the hands to the feet, making the measurements notably accurate compared to other scales. But more about that later.

Like many Withings scales, this device offers dual connectivity options: Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. This ensures your health data is consistently current and easily accessible on your mobile device.

While Bluetooth-only operation is an option, I’d recommend configuring the Wi-Fi settings by entering your password. Doing so simplifies the user experience considerably. Once set up, your primary responsibility is to step on the scale occasionally for measurements; the data will automatically sync to the cloud without further intervention.

Battery life

The battery life on this scale is engineered for longevity, running on a rechargeable Li-ion battery that can last up to a year on a single charge. This is particularly convenient, as it eliminates the need for frequent battery replacements or the hassle of keeping it near a power outlet.

Charging the device is straightforward, utilizing a standard USB-C cable for the task. This commonality in charging options is a subtle but appreciated feature, allowing for easy integration into a home where USB-C has become the norm for other devices. It means one less unique charging cable to keep track of, simplifying the overall user experience.

Withings Body Scan scale review: features, performance

Setup and user experience

Initial setup of the scale is uncomplicated and quick, even for those without much technical expertise. A concise guide outlines the essential steps, making the process a breeze. This is particularly the case if you’re already a Withings Health account holder. Simply add the scale through the app and it will guide you through setup. Gone are the days of jumping through hoops to get a scale to sync with an app; this device avoids such pitfalls.

Body Scan comes with an optional self-adhesive attachment in the box. You can affix this to your bathroom wall and extend the handlebar into it, potentially aiding those who’d rather not bend down to pick up the handlebar for a full weigh-in. Personally, I opted to forgo this option, as it provides me with the flexibility to relocate the scale throughout my home as needed.

The user experience is mostly smooth, but it’s worth mentioning that a full measurement cycle clocks in at about a minute. Roughly half of that time is dedicated to capturing the EKG data. While this might feel a bit long if you’re accustomed to quicker weigh-ins, the depth of information you gain makes the extra time worthwhile. If you’re in a hurry, you can opt for a faster, though less comprehensive, reading by not using the handlebar. The screen serves as more than just a digital display; it’s an interactive interface that adds an engaging dimension to each weigh-in.

While the scale is designed for individualised health tracking, it does offer the capability to recognise up to 8 users in total. This feature generally works well and adds a layer of convenience for households where more than one person is invested in health monitoring. The scale is designed to automatically recognise who is stepping on it based on the weight data it has stored for each profile. And if it is not sure, it will ask for help in the Health Mate app.

You can also manually switch users. When stepping on the scale, if you find that the wrong user profile is selected, you can easily switch to the correct one by leaning to the left or right. This intuitive feature allows for quick profile selection, ensuring that your health data is accurately recorded under your individual account. It’s a simple yet effective way to manage multiple users without having to go through complicated settings or menus.

Software and app integration

The software and app integration is where this scale truly comes to life. The iOS and Android Health Mate app serves as the central hub for all the data the scale collects. You can also link up to software so that it syncs to Apple Health, Google Fit and other fitness apps.

The Withings app has recently gone through a revamp. In my view it looks perfectly fine, offering a user-friendly interface that provides a wealth of information at your fingertips. From detailed breakdowns to historical trends, the app makes it easy to track your progress over time. It even offers explanations and hints for each unit of measurement, helping you understand what the numbers actually mean for your health.

As mentioned, the scale offers a plethora of metrics that go beyond the simple weight measurement. In fact the scale has the largest number of health biomarkers ever seen on a smart scale. Here’s a breakdown.

Weight & Metabolic Assessment

The scale begins by measuring weight, a fundamental yet essential metric, with a high degree of accuracy up to 50 grams. The device quickly settles on this reading, and for those who prefer not to see their weight, there’s an Eyes-Closed Mode that displays motivational graphics instead of numerical data.

Alongside your weight, the scale also provides your Body Mass Index (BMI) and a Metabolic Assessment. The latter offers insights into your resting metabolic rate, a crucial element for understanding weight loss or gain. This rate indicates the number of calories your body requires when at rest and is calculated based on your weight, BMI, age, height, and gender. In my experience, it estimated my resting metabolic rate at 1,852 kcal.

This data is further utilised to gauge your Metabolic Age, a figure that can be either encouraging or a wake-up call. In my case, it was reassuring to find that my metabolic age was slightly lower than my actual age.

Segmental Body Composition

The Withings scale introduces Segmental Body Composition, a feature not found in other home scales, and executes it pretty well. This metric offers a granular analysis of your body, segmenting it into torso, legs, and arms and providing data on the fat and muscle mass for each. It goes beyond the usual overall percentages of body fat and muscle mass of bioelectrical impedance analysis scales. I have learned to typically ignore these types of readings in the past as I didn’t have much confidence in their accuracy.

What I also like is the scale’s ability to benchmark your segmental body composition metrics against those of other Withings users in the same age and gender group. This contextualizes your data, giving you a clearer understanding of where you stand. In my experience, as a keen runner, the segmental results were consistent with my expectations – particularly the very low body fat in my legs. In fact, all of my readings were in the low to very-low category for body fat. For muscles they tend to fall more in line with the average. Again – something consistent for a person who runs more than 150km each month.

Additionally, the scale provides a historical chart that tracks changes in your muscle, fat, and bone mass over time. It also displays your Visceral Fat Index, which measures the fat surrounding vital organs in your abdominal area. This type of fat is known to pose health risks. The scale and the accompanying app conveniently indicate whether your metrics fall within a healthy range, a feature that I found particularly useful.

ECG & heart health

The ECG (Electrocardiogram) monitor is among the scale’s more sophisticated features, designed to detect irregularities in heart rhythm. It can serve as a valuable early warning system, particularly for those who may not be aware they have a heart-related issue. The monitor provides four possible outcomes: Normal Sinus Rhythm, Atrial Fibrillation, Inconclusive, and Noise Inconclusive. Each of these outcomes is straightforward and easy to understand.

What sets this ECG monitor apart is its 6-lead capability, which offers a more comprehensive view of the heart’s electrical activity compared to standard single-lead monitors. This added complexity lends greater confidence in the readings, making them more reliable for tracking heart health over time.

Additionally, the scale provides a detailed recording of your ECG signal, which can be reviewed in the smartphone app and shared as a PDF file. This feature is particularly useful for those who want to keep a close eye on their cardiovascular health or share the data with healthcare providers for further analysis. Having this level of detail readily available on a home scale adds another layer to your overall health monitoring, making it a truly multifaceted device.

In addition to heart rate info which you will get each time you step on the scale, there are other Heart Health metrics. They combine to help provide a quick snapshot of your cardiovascular health.

The European version comes equipped with a Pulse Wave Velocity (PWV) metric, a feature that measures the speed at which waves generated by heartbeats travel along your arteries. This is a valuable metric for gauging arterial stiffness, a key indicator of cardiovascular health. Meanwhile, the U.S. version omits this particular metric and instead offers a Vascular Age metric (also available in Europe), which serves as a more user-friendly, albeit less detailed, assessment of arterial health.

The differences between the US and European scale don’t stop there.

In the United States, the scale offers an Electrodermal Activity (EDA) Score, a biomarker that measures the activity of sweat glands in the soles of your feet. This score can offer valuable insights into your stress levels, diet, and overall health. On the flip side, the European version, which I tested, provides a Nerve Health Score. This is designed to identify early signs of peripheral autonomic neuropathies, which could be indicative of pre-diabetic states.

Rounding off the data is a daily weather forecast which optionally appears on the screen of the scale. This is aA small but convenient feature, that sits alongside air quality information. It’s a nice touch for planning your day right from the moment you step off the scale.

One of the standout features is the app’s ability to integrate with other health monitoring devices. If you’re using other Withings health gadgets, like a blood pressure monitor or the Sleep Analyzer, the app can consolidate all this information into a single, comprehensive health report. This makes it easier to get a holistic view of your well-being, enabling more informed decisions about your health regimen.

Accuracy and reliability

When it comes to accuracy and reliability, the scale performs admirably. The four weight sensors, enhanced by Position Control technology, ensure that you get highly accurate weigh-ins. The patented body position detector aids in this by guiding you to stand correctly, minimizing the chances of error. The scale’s measurement precision goes up to 50 grams, which is excellent for a consumer-grade device. What’s more, I found this type of accuracy regardless whether the scale was sitting on a tiled floor or carpet.

The inclusion of a 6-lead ECG in a home scale is a noteworthy feature. Traditional ECGs often utilize a single lead to capture the heart’s electrical activity, providing a limited view. In contrast, a 6-lead ECG offers a more comprehensive picture, capturing data from multiple angles around the heart. This allows for a more nuanced understanding of heart rhythms and potential irregularities. In essence, the 6-lead ECG turns the scale into a more potent tool for proactive health monitoring, elevating it beyond mere weight and body composition tracking.

However, it’s worth noting that for the most accurate results, it’s advisable to use the scale under consistent conditions—same time of day, similar room temperature, and preferably on an empty stomach. These best practices ensure that the data you collect is as reliable as possible, allowing you to track your health metrics over time with confidence.

The Withings Body Scan scale has recently hit the U.S. market, following its debut in Europe last year. While the hardware is consistent across regions, the metrics it displays are not, thanks to differing regulatory standards. In this article, we’ll demystify these differences for you.

Available on Withings.com, the scale comes with a $400 price tag, post-FDA approval. While that might sound like a hefty sum, remember, this isn’t your run-of-the-mill smart scale. The French outfit has once again set a new standard for smart scales. In fact, it’s in a league of its own in this market segment.

Our comprehensive review will be published soon, offering hands-on insights into its capabilities. So keep an eye out for that.

Why Body Scan is special: Way beyond the basics

Think of the Withings Body Scan as your personal health concierge, all packed into a sleek glass platform. With a retractable handle that James Bond would envy, this device is more than just a pretty face on your bathroom floor.

It’s a multitasker, juggling everything from weight to a plethora of other information about your body, all while boasting a battery life that outlasts your New Year’s resolutions. The 3.2-inch color LCD screen doesn’t just show your metrics; it gives you the day’s weather and air quality —because why not?

Precision? It’s got it down to 0.1 lbs. And it doesn’t just tell you what you weigh; it tells you what you’re made of, literally—breaking down body composition. It uses multi-frequency Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) to get this info, including whole-body fat and water percentage, visceral fat, muscle and bone mass. It even provides readings for individual body parts, including the torso, arms, and legs.

The Body Scan is also the world’s first health station to receive FDA clearance for the detection of atrial fibrillation through a 6-lead ECG. Plus it uses Galvanic Skin Response to monitor foot sweat levels, providing a screening method for signs of neuropathy.

US vs Europe: The differences

The differences in metrics are not arbitrary but are dictated by varying regulatory requirements in the US and Europe. Nevertheless, the hardware remains consistent across all versions.

Electrodermal Activity vs Nerve Health Score

In the United States, the Body Scan spits out an Electrodermal Activity (EDA) Score, which measures the activity of sweat glands in the soles of the feet. This biomarker can provide valuable insights into a patient’s stress levels, diet, and overall health.

On the other hand, the European version offers something called a Nerve Health Score. This metric helps to identify early signs of peripheral autonomic neuropathies. Many patients are unaware of underlying nerve or sweat gland dysfunction, which could be indicative of pre-diabetic states. With appropriate lifestyle changes, treatment modifications, and the right home monitoring tools, it’s possible to reverse or mitigate this damage.

Pulse Wave Velocity: The missing metric

In the EU and UK, the Withings Body Scan comes equipped with a Pulse Wave Velocity (PWV) metric. This feature measures the speed at which waves generated by heartbeats travel along the arteries. It’s a valuable metric for gauging arterial stiffness, a key indicator of cardiovascular health. PWV is often used by healthcare professionals to assess the risk of heart diseases and hypertension.

Contrastingly, the U.S. version omits this particular metric. Instead, it offers a Vascular Age metric, which is also available in the EU and UK models. Vascular Age serves as a more user-friendly, albeit less detailed, assessment of arterial health. It compares your cardiovascular health to age-specific norms, providing an estimate of your “vascular age” as opposed to your chronological age.

Regardless whether you opt for the U.S., EU, or UK version of the Withings Body Scan, rest assured you’re investing in the market’s most feature-rich smart scale. Despite regional differences in metrics, each version offers a comprehensive suite of tools designed to empower you in your health journey.

Withings has announced that its groundbreaking Body Scan Health Station has received FDA clearance. The device, priced at $399.95, will be available for purchase in the United States this fall. This comes after its launch a few months ago in the UK and EU, where it has already made waves for its innovative features.

FDA clearance: A milestone

The FDA clearance is a significant milestone for Withings. It makes the Body Scan as the world’s first health station to receive such approval for detecting atrial fibrillation via a 6-lead ECG.

Essential reading: Top fitness trackers and health gadgets

For those not in the know, the FDA is a US federal agency responsible for protecting public health by regulating a wide range of products, including medical devices. Its clearance signifies that the Body Scan has undergone rigorous evaluation and testing to meet the agency’s stringent criteria for safety, effectiveness, and quality.

Beyond weight management

While traditional scales focus on weight, the Body Scan is an all-encompassing health station. It offers daily analysis of biomarkers associated with common health conditions, including heart rate and vascular age.

Segmental body composition

One of the standout features is segmental body composition analysis via Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA). The electrodes in the base of the device and in the handle provide precise measurements of individual body parts, including the arms, legs, and torso. It’s a leap forward in body composition monitoring, offering a level of detail previously only available in sports labs.

Electrodermal activity monitoring

Developed in collaboration with Impeto Medical, the Body Scan also tracks sweat gland activity in the feet. This feature offers a daily assessment of small nerve activity, which can be crucial for identifying conditions such as degenerative nerve diseases. Users get an easy to understand score.

Cardiovascular health

The Body Scan is also equipped to offer a variety of cardiovascular measurements. It records a 6-lead ECG and tracks heart patterns associated with atrial fibrillation. The device dishes out these types of stats through its patented Vascular Age technology.

There’s more

Other metrics that are tracked by the scale include water percentage, visceral fat, muscle mass, bone mass, extra cellular and intracellular water and more. This is coupled with ultra-precise weight measurements (accurate to 50 grams). Withings Body Scan is also able to measure Basal Metabolic Rate, or the number of calories the body burns at rest.

The French outfit has always been about empowering users, and the Body Scan is no exception. The device comes with in-app coaching, clinical specialists, and personalized health plans. These programs are developed by experts in cardiovascular, neurologic, and metabolic conditions, providing users with actionable insights.

As far as hardware, the Body Scan features a high-strength tempered glass platform with an integrated retractable handle. It houses four weight sensors, 14 ITO electrodes, and a high-resolution 3.2-inch LCD color screen. The device runs on a long-life rechargeable battery that offers 12 months of use.

The FDA clearance positions the Withings Body Scan as a significant player in the US smart scale market. Winner of three CES 2022 Innovation Honoree Awards, the device goes way beyond simple weight management, providing users with a comprehensive health assessment right in their homes.

Withings, a notable player in the smart scale industry, has continually released devices that effectively couple utility with intuitive design. Their products are recognized for offering an expansive understanding of a user’s health, extending beyond mere weight.

Their newest gadget, the Withings Body Smart scale, is a prime example of this. Priced at $99.95 (check price on Withings, check price on Amazon), it’s not just a regular scale, but a tool designed to give you a more complete view of your overall health. Made with the user in mind, this entry-level scale uses Withings Precision Technology, which employs several frequencies to figure out exact body composition metrics.

In this review, I’m going to dig into the features of the Withings Body Smart scale, weigh up its good and bad points, and decide if it meets the standards we’ve come to expect. So, let’s step onto the scale and find out what it brings to the table.

Withings Body Smart scale review: design, hardware, battery life

Look & feel

The Withings Body Smart scale, while being an affordable option in Withings’ line of smart scales, doesn’t compromise on quality or functionality. It’s the younger sibling to the more advanced Body Scan and Body Comp scales. While these big brothers boast more capabilities, they also come with much heftier price tags, making the Body Smart scale a cost-effective choice for those seeking a balance of functionality and affordability.

This scale is not only easy on the wallet, but it also combines style and usefulness. Its strong tempered glass platform has a modern and clean look, which makes it a fashionable touch to any bathroom or bedroom. The display is very shiny, which looks nice, but it also means it shows dirt and fingerprints more easily.

One thing I liked about this scale is its very thin design. It adds to its good looks. You can choose between two colors, black and white, so you can pick the one that suits your style best. As you can see in the pictures in this article, I tried out the black one.

The Body Smart scale boasts a design focused on ease-of-use, featuring a bright, high-resolution LCD color screen (2.8”, 320 x 240 pixels) that shows your measurements at a glance. The scale itself measures 325 x 325 x 25.6 mm, which makes it a bit larger compared to some of the other scales I’ve tested previously. It’s something worth considering. However, its larger size contributes to its sturdiness, ensuring a steady platform for easy stepping on and off.

The screen is large, bright and extremely sharp. Making it super easy to read.

All things considered, the scale comes across as a high-end product. A design that doesn’t overcomplicate things. It’s attractive with a bright, colourful, and easy-to-read screen.

Under the hood

When it comes to the technology powering the Withings Body Smart scale, it’s all about precision and versatility. The scale is armed with advanced sensor technology, including four weight sensors that deliver highly accurate weigh-ins. This is facilitated by the patented Position Control technology, which guides users to find the optimal stance for the most precise weight measurements. The scale has an accuracy of 0.1 lbs, according to the documentation.

The scale’s versatility is evident in its wide weight range, accommodating weights from 5 to 200 kg (9 to 440 lbs). This makes it suitable for a diverse range of users.

The Withings Body Smart scale doesn’t stop at weight. It also measures a variety of other health metrics, including body fat percentage, total body water percentage, muscle mass, bone mass, Visceral Fat Index, Basal Metabolic Rate, and standing heart rate. This comprehensive set of metrics transforms the scale from a simple weight measurement tool into a holistic health tracker.

However, it’s important to approach some of these additional metrics with a healthy dose of skepticism. While smart scales have improved significantly, the most reliable metric is still weight. The other data should be viewed as estimates rather than precise measurements. That being said, having used several Withings scales in the past and considering the company’s long-standing presence in the market, I have more confidence in the accuracy of their additional metrics compared to most other brands.

Connectivity is good. The scale has the ability to link to WiFi and Bluetooth and syncing is automatic. The on-board memory feature stores up to 16 weigh-ins at one time if the scale cannot sync wirelessly to the app. The smartphone software, of course, stores an unlimited amount of data and provides in-depth analysis.

Battery life

As far as battery life, the Withings Body Smart scale is powered by four 1.5V Alkaline cells (AAA). With normal use, these should provide a battery life of up to 15 months. This is a decent lifespan for a device of this nature, reducing the need for frequent battery changes.

It’s important to mention that the scale lacks a rechargeable battery feature. This might be a concern for some, as having a rechargeable option is not only more convenient but also eco-friendlier. When your batteries eventually run out, you’ll have to purchase new ones. Even with this consideration, the battery longevity of the scale should adequately serve most users’ requirements.

On a positive note, there’s no need for an immediate battery purchase when you first acquire the scale. It arrives with batteries already installed, and you just need to pull out the plastic separator in the battery compartment.

Withings Body Smart scale review: features, performance

Initial setup

Setting up the Withings Body Smart scale is a straightforward process, even for those who are new to smart scales. If you already have a Withings account and the app installed on your phone, you’re halfway there. If not, creating an account and downloading the app should only take a few minutes.

The process begins with opening the Withings app, tapping on Devices, and then the + symbol. From there, you select Scales, then Body Smart, and then Install. The scale is activated by pressing and holding the pairing button on the bottom for at least three seconds. The scale screen will display a QR code. Once the app detects the scale, you’ll be asked to pair your scale by entering a 6-digit pairing code that appears on the scale.

The gadget provides connectivity options through either Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. My recommendation is to connect it to your Wi-Fi network for convenience. If Wi-Fi is ever unavailable, the scale has the capability to automatically switch over to Bluetooth for direct phone connectivity.

The next step involves personalizing the display screens. Via the smartphone app, you can opt for a preset selection of screens or tailor everything according to your preference. A unique feature is that the scale can display daily weather forecasts and air quality levels. As someone who frequently works out outdoors, I appreciate this kind of information. It means when I weigh myself in the morning, I know the conditions outside.

Different modes

The scale provides some unique features including three modes that you can choose from:

Weight-Only Mode, also known as Pacemaker Safety Mode. This is a feature designed for users with pacemakers or other medical implants. The mode disables all impedance-based technology, including ECG and body composition measurements like body fat, muscle mass, bone mass, and water mass, to prevent interference with the medical devices.

Eyes-Closed Mode is designed for users who prefer not to see their weight and other measurements during each weigh-in. When enabled, this mode replaces the usual measurement screens with motivational graphics. Don’t worry, all measurements are still recorded and can be viewed in the Withings app.

Athlete Mode is designed for users with a specific body type, typically those who work out more than 8 hours a week and have a resting heart rate below 60 bpm. The regular algorithm may not accurately calculate fat mass for these users, so Athlete Mode uses an alternate algorithm that takes into account the user’s athletic body type. When enabled, fat mass measurements will be lower and muscle mass measurements higher.

You also have the option of enabling the Baby Mode. For this, you first need to create a profile for your baby in the Withings app, enter their height and weight, and then weigh yourself alone. After your measurement syncs with the app, you weigh yourself again while holding your baby. The scale will display your combined weight and then your baby’s weight separately.

That’s pretty much it as far as setup. Once you find a suitable spot for the scale, you’re all done. The feet of the scale are quite grippy on tile floors which is a good thing. If you plan to use it on a carpet, it includes carpet feet that you can easily attach to the bottom of the scale. This ensures accurate measurements even on soft surfaces.

It’s a good idea to keep the scale away from bathtubs and similar. In the past, I’ve had an instance where my smart scale went haywire because I placed it too close to the shower, causing it to get wet repeatedly. If the surface of the scale gets splashed repeatedly, it can ultimately damage the internals or the battery.

Enhanced accuracy, lots of data

As mentioned, I’ve owned a few Withings scales in the past. Even though this scale is more towards the budget end, the company has made strides in the precision of measurement technology. You now get weight information down to two decimal points. Weigh yourself, drink a half of a glass of water and weigh yourself again – you’ll notice a difference in weight. It’s very precise. Also, you’ll find that the scale records measurements impressively quickly.

What I have also noticed is that the body fat measurements are much more consistent than previously. With some of the earlier generations (and other brands’ scales), you can get quite a large variance in body fat on different weigh-ins. The Body Smart is remarkably consistent. Obviously, the company has updated its algorithms and/or tech. I now have a bit more confidence in these types of measurements.

When it comes to tracking your weight, the scale will display a graph on its screen showcasing your historical data, enabling you to identify whether your weight is rising, falling, or staying put. The measurements of body fat and muscle are shown in percentages. For metrics like visceral fat and external air quality, the device illustrates a healthy range and indicates the current position within that spectrum.

I found the large colour display of Body Smart to be very easy to read, even without my glasses. The results are presented across several screens for a comprehensive view – a sort of a slideshow view.

Of course, for more information and detailed insights into your metrics you will need to head over to the Withings smartphone app. The company offers optional premium subscription plans but they are not mandatory to access the scale’s raw data.

The data syncs automatically so the smartphone software acts like a repository for all your health statistics. You also have the option of linking this up to your Apple Health or Google Fit account which is useful, as well as Fitbit. Other integrations can be done via IFTTT.

As mentioned, in addition to weight you also get info on total body water %, muscle mass, bone mass, Visceral Fat Index and Basal Metabolic Rate. I particularly find the scale useful to keep track of my muscle versus fat ratio.

The scale also measures your standing heart rate, which I find is of limited use. It is not the same as your resting heart rate so this metric is more a nice-to-have than a must have.

Also worth a mention is goal tracking. The app provides this feature and predicts the timeline to achieve your set goals based on your data trajectory. This type of info can help motivate someone who is on a journey towards a particular weight or muscle % goal, for example.

Multiple users

The Body Smart scale is designed with family use in mind, capable of accommodating multiple users. This means that everyone in your household can use the scale to monitor their health metrics. You have the option to group all users under one account or create individual Withings accounts for each user, ensuring privacy for everyone’s data. The scale can recognise up to eight users, making it a practical choice for larger households.

The positive thing about this scale is it can automatically figure out who is using it. If it’s unsure, the mobile app will ask you to confirm before saving the measurement. You can see these in the ‘Unknown measurements’ section in the app. Even though I was the only one using the scale, there were a few times when the scale wasn’t certain about the measurements. But I sorted it out quickly.

Withings Body Smart scale review: the bottom line

Withings is a reputable French company, known for quality health devices including other models of scales. Its Body Smart scale offers an impressive blend of affordability, functionality, and quality. It’s a device that you set up once and then forget about, apart from the regular weigh-ins. The scale provides a wealth of health metrics, with a level of accuracy that is impressive, particularly when it comes to weight measurements down to two decimal points.

Essential reading: Top fitness trackers and health gadgets

The scale’s design is sleek and modern, and its user-friendly interface makes it a pleasure to use. The various modes cater to different user needs, and the ability to accommodate multiple users makes it a great choice for families.

While it may not have all the bells and whistles of its more expensive siblings, the Body Smart scale delivers where it counts. It’s a reliable, accurate, and easy-to-use tool for anyone looking to keep a closer eye on their health.

In terms of value for money, retailing for $99 (check price on Withings, check price on Amazon), the Withings Body Smart scale is hard to beat. It’s a quality product that delivers on its promises, and I have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone in the market for a smart scale.
