Movano Health gets FDA clearance for its EvieMED Ring

Movano Health has received FDA 510(k) clearance for its EvieMED Ring. This is a close sibling to the Evie Ring.

The device’s clearance covers pulse oximetry features, including heart rate and blood oxygen monitoring. It’s worth noting at the outset that EvieMED Ring is a clinical-grade device for B2B channels. So its not consumer-focused like the Evie Ring

What makes it special is its smart design that actually feels good to wear. Unlike those clunky medical devices that make you feel like you’re hooked up to a machine, the EvieMED Ring slips comfortably on your finger with a clever little gap that allows for finger swelling.

A standout detail? The device has proven accuracy across different skin tones, as verified by a Fitzpatrick scale study. This addresses a limitation in some medical monitoring technologies that fail to provide consistent readings for diverse skin types.

Evie Ring

Movano has already positioned the device in serious medical research, with the ring selected for an MIT study on long COVID and chronic Lyme disease. They’re also deep in conversations across the healthcare industry, with plans for a pilot study with a major healthcare provider in early 2025. The study will focus on health management for high-risk populations, demonstrating the device’s potential beyond individual consumer use.

Beyond basic pulse oximetry, the EvieMED Ring tracks a range of wellness metrics. These include sleep patterns, activity levels, temperature variations, calorie expenditure, and respiration rates. Available in eight sizes, the device aims to provide a wealth of health information.

The consumer story

As mentioned, behind the medical-grade EvieMED Ring lies the consumer-focused Evie Ring. Made available in early 2024, it is specifically designed with women’s health in min.

The device can monitor an impressive array of metrics, from activity and sleep to menstrual cycle and mood. Its accompanying smartphone app translates complex data into actionable insights, empowering users to understand the interconnections between their various health indicators.

We’re not sure on the exact differences between EvieMED Ring and Evie Ring. Presumably, there are very few. So this FDA clearance bodes well for the consumer version, demonstrating its accuracy.

Movano isn’t stopping here. They’re exploring potentially game-changing developments like non-invasive glucose monitoring and cuff-less blood pressure tracking. These are two areas where we are yet to see significant progress, not just in terms of smart rings but also with the wider wearable tech industry.
