New Oppo smartwatch appears in certification database

A new Oppo smartwatch has surfaced in the MIIT certification database in China, carrying the model number OWW251. Registered under the brand’s name, the device hints at the continued overlap between Oppo and OnePlus, both owned by BBK Electronics.

LTE connectivity and esim support

Some info can be gathered from the listing. It seems the new Oppo smartwatch will support LTE connectivity across multiple standards, including TD-LTE, LTE FDD, and WCDMA. This connectivity will be bolstered by eSIM support through an independent eUICC chip, enabling standalone use without relying on a smartphone.

The operating system mentioned in the certification is Android. This indicates the smartwatch will likely be compatible with a wide range of apps, providing users with an experience consistent with other Android-based wearables.

This is pretty much where the available info ends. Everything else is speculation.

Parallels with OnePlus

Looking back at Oppo’s previous patterns, we can draw some conclusions. For example, the release of the Watch X earlier in 2024. That device was pretty much identical to the OnePlus Watch 2 in every respect. Given that both Oppo and OnePlus are subsidiaries of BBK Electronics and have a history of sharing technologies, it’s plausible that the upcoming Oppo smartwatch may align with the upcoming OnePlus Watch spotted recently in FCC filings.

The new Oppo smartwatch, model OPWWE251, features a circular design and a 648 mAh battery—a 29.6% increase over its predecessor. Connectivity options include Bluetooth, GNSS, NFC, and Wi-Fi 4.

We dont know yet whether this will be the Oppo Watch 3 or an interim version of Watch 2. Regardless, the new device is expected to debut globally alongside the OnePlus 13 in January. This suggests that Oppo’s new smartwatch could follow a similar timeline with comparable specifications.

Oppo Watch X has a lot going for it. But it also has a few notable limitations. The device comes in only one size, which may not suit all users, and lacks a cellular option, requiring a phone nearby for full functionality. Key health tracking features such as ECG, body temperature sensors, fall detection, and period tracking are absent, putting it behind competitors. Addressing these shortcomings could make the next version a more well-rounded device.

As they say – watch this space. We may, very well, get a new Oppo Watch in about a month. Besides Watch X, internationally the brand also sells Oppo Watch and Oppo Band 2. However, its wearable range in China is more broad. So it is possible this new device could be for the local market.
