Huawei Watch 4 Pro gets new faces, better metrics & smarter workouts

Huawei just dropped a fresh update for the Watch 4 Pro, and it’s a pretty solid one if you’re into tracking workouts or just want your watch to be a bit smarter. Firmware version 4.3.0.588 brings Harmony OS 4.3 to the device, and the focus here is clearly on fitness.

There’s quite a bit to unpack in this update so let’s start with the cosmetics. There’s a new watch face called Route Beam. It looks clean and shows your workout history and fitness stats right on the main screen. No need to swipe around or dive into menus to see how you’ve been doing.

There’s also a tweak to how watch faces work in general. A layout called Time Combo that lets you mix and match different widgets.

The most interesting improvements in this update are to do with new running-focused features. Users now get wrist-based running farm analysis, and it tracks stuff like ground contact time, vertical bounce, leg stiffness, and more. This is aimed at helping runners improve their form and hopefully avoid injuries. Basically, if you’re putting in serious miles, this could be useful. Apple recently introduced these types of metrics on their watch, and Garmin has had them for a while.

Huawei has also given some of the core apps a bit of a facelift. Workout, Activity Tracker, Heart Rate, Sleep, Breathing Exercises, and Stay Fit now look a bit more polished, with brighter visuals and a more dynamic feel. They haven’t reinvented anything here, but the changes make things easier to read and navigate.

Cycling mode gets some love too. The watch can now automatically detect when you start riding and kick off a workout. If you’re using it with a Huawei phone, you’ll also get expanded real-time data and sensor support.

Two new training modes also show up in this update: basketball and esports. Bit of an odd combo, but there you go. On top of that, there’s a feature called Smart Suggestions. The watch will start nudging you with tips about recovery, when to hydrate, or even calorie tracking.

One nice quality-of-life update — you can now reject calls from WhatsApp, Messenger, LINE, and Telegram right from your wrist. Handy if you get pinged a lot and don’t want to keep pulling out your phone.

Huawei’s also done a bit of backend tuning. They say health and fitness data is more accurate now, but don’t go into much detail. It could be better heart rate tracking, improved sleep detection, or just general polish.

All in all, it’s a hefty update. Nothing flashy, but a bunch of thoughtful upgrades that make the Watch 4 Pro more useful, especially if you’re someone who trains regularly or likes digging into metrics. Definitely worth updating when it hits your device.
