Huawei Watch 5 health button likely just bundles standard metrics

Huawei has posted another teaser clip for its upcoming Watch 5, and this one gives a clearer idea of what to expect. It looks like the mystery button is geared toward launching a quick one-minute health check, combining common metrics into a single scan.

The clip, posted on X, shows the same sensor along the side of the device. This time it’s clear that tapping it initiates a bundled health measurement. Think heart rate, blood oxygen, ECG, stress, and temperature. That’s a solid feature set, but it’s nothing out of the ordinary. It mirrors what’s already available in many other wearables.

Presumably, the fact that the button is on the side makes it easier to take a quick on-demand measurement. It probably means not having to go through menu options in order to initiate a reading.

This clears up some of the earlier speculation. Our hopes for more novel tracking like non-invasive blood glucose or even cuffless blood pressure seem off the table, at least for now. The floating orbs in the original teaser had stirred up guesses ranging from glucose molecules to hydration levels. In the end, the visuals appear to point to standard stuff.

The positioning of the sensor still makes sense for a feature like this. Resting a finger against the sensor is a familiar interaction on ECG-enabled watches, and it’s an easy way to guide users through a guided, multi-metric scan.

The rest of the hardware design continues along expected lines. We still see a rotating crown above the sensor, suggesting the device retains full smartwatch functionality. There’s been no reduction in ambition here. Huawei is simply bundling health metrics in a more accessible way.

Watch 5 launch event now just weeks away

The official launch event is locked in for May 15 in Berlin. It’s also worth noting that pictures of the Watch Fit 4 has also been leaked. There’s a good chance Huawei may introduce that device alongside the Watch 5. Also, there are a bunch of pictures of Watch 5 that have been released ahead of time by a retailer.

The Watch 4 series already includes strong health and connectivity features, so expectations for Watch 5 were high. The new teaser doesn’t kill the buzz, but it does reset it. This might be less about introducing new sensor tech and more about simplifying what’s already there.
