Withings smartphone app beta revamps calorie tracking

The latest Beta of the Withings app adds glucose tracking, a redesigned calorie view and an improved sleep score that now factors in HRV. It also introduces support for two new languages and tighter integration with Apple Health and MyFitnessPal.

Calories get a clearer spotlight

Withings says it has cleaned up the way it handles nutrition data. The old “Food Intake” section is out. In its place is a new Calories biomarker that gives you a proper readout of daily intake, sourced from MyFitnessPal.

What’s changed is the way this information is displayed. Instead of buried in menus or isolated from other health stats, calorie tracking is now pulled into a central location. The visual layout should make it easier to spot trends or gaps.

Blood sugar makes its debut

Another useful addition is support for glucose values, as long as those readings are coming from Apple Health. If you’re using a CGM or log your glucose elsewhere and sync it to HealthKit, it should now show up automatically in the Withings app.

The appeal is obvious. Having blood sugar data alongside sleep, activity and weight lets you see how different behaviours affect metabolic health. It’s not doing analysis yet, just surfacing the numbers in context.

Sleep score gets smarter

The sleep score is also being updated, though the change is more subtle. It now includes HRV-based recovery information, which means you’ll start to see how restful your night was in terms of recovery, not just duration or interruptions. To remind, it is only recently that Withings devices, such as the Scanwatch 2, have started dishing out HRV data.

This brings the sleep score more in line with the way recovery metrics are used across the wider wearables ecosystem. We actually think it would be a good idea for Withings to include a dedicated Recovery metric of its own – something that would let you know if it is a good idea to push hard on a particular day or take it easy.

No word on a public release date

One final note in this beta is language support. Withings has added both Hindi and Turkish to its list of available languages. This feels more like infrastructure work, but it’s worth pointing out as the company tries to widen its reach geographically.

It’s not yet clear when this Beta will move into the public version of the app, or if all the features will make it through unchanged. But it does show that Withings is investing in the app experience, which continues to be a key part of its overall offering.
