RingConn smart ring update brings light exposure tracking

A new update for the RingConn smart ring introduces a redesigned Health section, a firmware upgrade for Gen 2 devices, and support for light exposure tracking. Users now get a weekly Lifestyle Score, enhanced workout integration, and deeper Apple Health and Google Health Connect sync.

RingConn shifts from raw data to personalised guidance

The RingConn app is now on version 3.12.0, and once installed, it triggers a follow-up firmware update for the ring itself. The standout change is a redesigned Health section. Instead of just throwing metrics at you, the app now rolls them up into a weekly Lifestyle Score. It looks at seven factors and tells you how your recent data compares to previous weeks. If you’re off track, the app suggests a personalised plan to get things moving in the right direction.

There’s also a new icon in the upper corner of the Health tab that lets you dive deeper into trends over time. The Trends tab itself has been renamed Lifestyle, reinforcing the shift in tone from passive tracking to active coaching.

A good example of this is the pre-sleep preparation score. Instead of listing your heart rate drop before sleep in isolation, the app now shows how that drop compares to your baseline, and whether it sits in the normal range. Same goes for HRV. The system highlights your weekly change and maps it against what’s typical for you.

Light exposure tracking arrives for Gen 2 users

Another standout feature is light exposure intensity, a metric currently available only on the Gen 2 version of the ring. It tracks how much light you get before bedtime and after waking, as these periods can affect melatonin production and morning alertness.

RingConn is the first smart ring to offer direct insight into this. The device uses its built-in PPG optical sensors not just for heart rate, but also to detect ambient light levels. This allows it to measure the intensity of environmental lighting throughout the day.

The sensor estimates your exposure to both natural and artificial light by monitoring how much light enters the ring in different conditions. These readings are then combined with your sleep and activity data to offer a view into your circadian rhythm and lifestyle habits.

You’ll find the light data under the pre-sleep and wake-up sections. It takes at least a week of wearing the ring after the update for data to start appearing.

Expanded workout support and better syncing

Two new exercise modes have also arrived: indoor rowing and gentle yoga. These are also only available on Gen 2 hardware, likely due to sensor or processing requirements. The update brings more precise metrics for these workouts, helping users better categorise low-intensity or non-traditional training.

There’s also a welcome quality-of-life change on the integration front. RingConn now offers two-way sync with both Apple Health and Google Health Connect. This means you can pull in your workout data, type, duration, calories, heart rate, distance, and see it in one place alongside the ring’s sleep, stress and readiness scores.

The firmware update (to version 02.017) also adds a new sensor function: light intensity collection. This ties into the new health tracking tools mentioned above. Stability improvements and bug fixes round out the firmware changes.

Period tracking and cycle trends get visual

One other addition worth noting is the expansion of cycle tracking features. The updated app now includes visuals of menstrual cycle length, skin temperature fluctuations, and mood or symptom patterns. These are meant to help users better understand their rhythms and share insights if needed.

The feature can be turned on or off from the app settings. It’s still in its early stages, but the visualisation looks clean and should appeal to those already using the temperature sensor for fertility or hormonal monitoring.

So as can be seen – quite a significant update. Definitely worth installing. If you are in two minds about purchasing this ring, make sure to check out my full hands-on review.
