As originally spotted by FitnessTrackerTest, Tacoma Bike & Ski, an online retailer, briefly listed the Edge 1050 on their website. This confirmes the rumored price of $699.99. A “Device Only” label hints at a potential bundle option for $799.99, likely including additional sensors or accessories.

The timing of these leaks coincides with two major cycling events. The first is the Tour de France, starting June 29th, and then there’s Eurobike, opening its doors on July 3rd. These events provide a perfect platform for Garmin to unveil the Edge 1050 to a global audience of cycling enthusiasts and industry professionals.

Also, it is worth noting that Garmin often has product releases on Tuesdays. So don’t be surprised if we get the official reveal tomorrow. Wednesday, the 26th, is also a realistic option as one of the leaked images of the device shows that date.

The leaked images suggest the Edge 1050 will retain the three standard hardware buttons (one on the left side and two on the bottom). Furthermore, some rumors suggest additional touch-sensitive sliders for zooming.

A major improvement has to do with the display.

The leaked images strongly suggest a departure from the transflective MIP display used in previous models. Speculation points towards either an AMOLED display, similar to the Garmin Epix watch and Forerunner 965, or a high-resolution LCD screen. Most likely, the latter.

A boost from 470 x 282 pixels to 800 x 480 pixels would be a welcome improvement, enhancing readability and potentially sacrificing some battery life. To remind, the Edge 1040 comes with a display packing a resolution of 282 x 470 pixels.

Battery life and other hardware upgrades

The new design and potential display upgrade raise questions about battery life. Rumors suggest the Edge 1050 may offer around 20 hours of use, a decrease from the Edge 1040 but still respectable. Solar charging appears unlikely based on the leaked images. So we may be limited to just a non-solar variant.

Other hardware upgrades include a rumored built-in speaker for voice navigation, a larger 64GB memory capacity (double that of the Edge 1040 non-solar), and the potential inclusion of Garmin Pay NFC functionality. The device’s dimensions are rumored to be 60.2 x 118.5 x 16.3mm with a weight of 161 grams and IPX7 water resistance.

One leaked image showcases a GroupRide navigation route, suggesting this feature may receive more attention in the new model. Of course, Garmin could have some other software upgrades in store.

Smart helmets have gained in popularity in recent years. In addition to protecting you in the case of an accident, these types of products slap on a host of other functionality. Which over 1 million customers, LIVALL is one of the best known names and a pilot in this space. It launched its first smart helmet in the now distant 2014.

The latest product from the outfit is the BH51M NSO smart helmet. The company has turned to Kickstarter to raise funds for manufacturing and promote its latest offering.

Comprehensive safety features

We all know that riding a bike comes with risks, particularly in urban settings. So let’s start off with safety features.

The gizmo has a total of 53 built-in LED lights so drivers on the road and pedestrians can see you from all angles. The intensity of lights adjusts automatically depending on the time of day helping to preserve battery life and keep you visible.

There’s a gravity acceleration sensor inside capable of picking up on deceleration. The helmet will then activate the front and rear lights for 8 seconds. Other lights will be activated when you press the turn signal button on the bar-mounted remote controller. That means you do not need to lift your hands off the handlebar to safely indicate turns.

Rounding off the safety features is a patented SOS alert and fall detection system. If the helmet determines you have had an accident, an SMS alert will be set to your preset lists of emergency contacts containing your GPS location. This will be fired off after 90 seconds which gives you enough time to switch off the alert before it goes out, if needed.

Great sound by JBL

Another big selling point of this product is its open ear speaker system with sound by JBL. For those not in the know, this is one of the worlds most renowned audio makers. This is actually the only smart helmet manufacturer that has integrated JBL technology. You can use audio to make calls, listen to music or navigation instructions, access your smartphone’s voice assistant service.

Lightweight, adjustable, water-resistant

The helmet itself is adjustable, lightweight (only 480 grams) and waterproof (IPX4). It comes with a dial-fit wheel to ensure everything is held firmly in place.

LIVALL says they’ve designed the product for long rides. You can get up to 12 hours of battery life on a single charge which should suffice for even the longest of day trips. The helmet also comes with an anti-loss alarm which kicks in if the distance between the helmet and a paired smartphone exceeds 20 meters.

All of this makes the LIVALL BH51M NSO quite a feature-packed product. It is therefore no surprise that, with a couple of weeks to go, the campaign on Kickstarter has raised more than $200,000.

A pledge of $129 will see one of these delivered to your doorstep in September. This is quite a big saving on the $219 the product will sell for after the official launch.

So what is it that makes it so popular?

Design

Starting with looks, the sleek looking Reevo is totally hubless. This makes it very unique, unlike anything else out there.

The wheels and tires are centerless. There are no spokes, no transparent centre. Nevertheless, the company says the bike is extremely safe and can carry weight up to 265lbs or 120kg. Not to waste any space, there are even storage hooks attached to the wheel itself!

The thick aluminium alloy body with a sleek stealth black finish makes it look a bit more bulky than the typical bike. But this has the advantage of being built around a strong but lightweight core. The whole thing does look very futuristic!

Reevo comes with a few features to enhance your safety on the road. It packs a bright headlamp, built-in turn signals and tail light (800 lumens). There’s also an ambient light sensor, which can detect outside conditions and turn the lights on and off automatically.

Security

Security is a strong point of the Reevo. The thing comes with a triple level anti-theft system which is designed to ensure the bike remains yours.

• One touch fingerprint sensor: this allows for keyless access. No need to attach chains or locks, you can secure your bike at the press of a button. The biometric authentication looks to be is very cool. It unlocks the bike in one second.
• Built-in wheel lock: this is a security system that is built into the bike’s frames preventing the wheels from turning. So no access for bolt cutters.
• Built-in GPS with motion detection and geofencing: The electric bike has a microchip with a GPS module inside its frame. This automatically monitors for movements and will send you alerts when triggered. It is extremely difficult to remove without cutting the frame, so you’ll always be able to locate the bike on a map inside the Reevo smartphone app at any time.

Performance and battery

Of course, Reevo comes with everything else you’d expect from an electric bike. There’s a 750W motor inside that can go up to 25mph. This comes with Class 2 throttle and pedal assist which provides tailored assistance depending on the road gradient. An alternative is to use the handlebar throttle for manual control.

The 48V, 10.5Ah battery is detachable so you can carry it with you for easy charging. The internal security system has a hidden second battery with a standby time of 10 hours – ensuring the safety of your bike while the main battery is charging.

When the battery is empty it takes about 3 hours to fully refuel. This will keep you going for about 37 miles, which compares well to most of the competition. There’s even a little USB port so you can charge your smartphone on the go.

Release date, price and availability

According to project updates, delivery is on schedule for the end of this year. There’s still time to get in and join more than 2,300 backers.

At $2398, it isn’t exactly cheap, but it is one of the most feature-packed bikes around. Also, you can get it now at 34% off the final retail price. The bike comes with a 1 year warranty from the date of shipping.

This is a well known company which has been manufacturing smart helmets including some for skiing, mountain biking and cyclists for the past 7 years. In this time it has grown to be the industry-leading smart helmet provider.

In the short time that it has been on the platform, the LIVALL EVO21 Smart Helmet has raised over $300,000. This is well above what has turned out to be a rather modest $10,000 goal.

The smart helmet comes full to the brim with advanced features. It has been designed to go much further than just protecting you in case of a crash. Its aim is to prevent accidents before they happen.

Comprehensive set of LED lights

To this end the EVO21 packs a comprehensive set of auto-brightness LED warning lights. This includes a 270° rear light with higher lumens that maximizes your visibility from long ranges. There’s a multi-color front light with a 45° reach, so even if you tuck your head the light will be visible.

A smart brake warning light and turn signals are there to let drivers around you know what you will do next. These are connected to accelerometer sensors which automatically signal when you are slowing down or stopping.

This is combined with a remote on the handlebar which you can use to communicate to the LEDs whether you are turning left or right. Much safer and quicker than signaling with your arms.

It’s the same type tech that is built into automobiles and motorcycles. The company says the helmet is brighter and lighter than anything else on the market today.

SOS alert system

It is also safer. EVO21 comes with fall detection and SOS smarts. In the unfortunate case you experience a fall, it will send a text message to your emergency contact. The notification provides them with your exact location thanks to a GPS signal obtained from your smartphone. All of this is done automatically, so no need for you to press any buttons.

LIVALL says the tech can detect falls anywhere above 1.5 meters. A text message will be sent within a minute and a half after you experience the accident. This gives you time to switch it off in case of false emergencies. For example if you drop your helmet and do not need any help.

The customization of emergency contacts is done through the smartphone app. This has fitness tracking, route tracking and a battery indicator. The LIVALL Riding App also connects you to a riding community so you can link up with others.

Durable and comfortable build

Of course, build is the most important part of a helmet that is meant to protect you. The company is very serious about this aspect and has passed rigorous safety standard tests with an A-star rating.

To this end the ultra-lightweight (350 grams) EVO21 comes with a top protective PC shell. This is combined with an EPS impact-absorbing liner and a lower protective PC shell.

The impact protection is enhanced by a dual-protection system. The first layer is made of PC material that distributes evenly the force of an impact through the helmet. The second is made of Polysource PSI. Its purpose is to absorb the remaining pressure and keep it away from your head.

There’s also a layer for comfort. It is made of memory foam to ensure a snug fit which is just what you need for those long bike journeys. To keep you cool, the helmet packs an aerodynamic ventilation design and increased venting area.

All of this comes with an IPX5 water-resistance rating. Which means the smart helmet and its lighting system will work just fine in most weather conditions, including rain. Having said that, the company does not recommend you ride on a rainstorm day.

Battery life is a pretty decent 10 hours on a single charge. For a typical cyclist that should last about a week.

Price and availability

The LIVALL team has already started turning their prototype into a finish product. With a number of smart helmets under its belt, they’ve got lots of experience in this sort of thing. In fact they ship an incredible 200 thousand helmets across the globe each year.

The LIVALL EVO21 is the latest and greatest smart helmet created by the company to date. It has won the iF Gold Award 2021 for its perfect fusion of highly functional and aesthetic demands. Winning an iF Gold Award is a ‘thumbs up’ from an international design jury – a stamp of approval. To remind, Google had pulled support for Maps on the Apple Watch back in 2017. No reasons were stated for this but the lack of user engagement and limited functionality certainly played a part. At the time the search giant said it would add support back at some point in the future.

Well, it has stayed true to its word. The Maps functionality has been reinstated as detailed on Google’s blog last month.

‘When you’re out and about, smartwatches help you stay connected and see essential information at a glance. With the Google Maps app for the Apple Watch, you can easily navigate by car, bike, public transit or on foot.’

” Quickly get estimated arrival times and step-by-step directions to destinations you’ve saved, like Home or Work, and other shortcuts you’ve designated in the app. For all other destinations, you can start navigating from your phone and pick up where you left off on your watch.”

This is excellent news for those that like to navigate by using online sources. A choice is good as most of us have a personal preference in terms of what we use for this purpose. Not to mention that while Apple Maps is good, in certain cities and regions Google Maps outshines it. Over 220 countries and territories mapped on the service.

The software provides step-by-step directions, along with estimated travel times. You can start an existing location directly from the watch such as Home or Work, but for new ones users will need to initiate using the phone app.

A list of routes will then be offered  for traveling by car, public transport and walking. In addition to this, you’ll finally be able to get cycling directions on your wrist. Even before the functionality arrives to the Apple Watch as part of watchOS 7.

There’s rerouting based on live traffic, incidents, and road closure. This is in addition to offline maps to search and navigate without an internet connection. The directions are clearly displayed in cards on the watch.

After a few years Lumos is back on Kickstarter with a new bicycle helmet. Lumos Ultra combines lights, turn signals and smart features into a single cohesive whole.

The company got their start via crowdfunding some 5 years ago. The original helmet went out of its way to make sure you’re seen when cycling. The next generation product is even better. The company says it has received a ton of feature requests in recent years which it attempted to address with its latest product. Best of all, despite all the improvements Lumos Ultra is very affordable.

Bike mounted lights don’t always do enough to make you visible to everyone on the road. Plus they can easily be stolen. The roads are becoming more congested so a smart rider needs a smart helmet.

The IPX6 rated Lumos Ultra comes with a super-light and aerodynamic design with a front light, and two rear lights which double-up as turn signals. All of these rechargeable via USB-C. The lights feature Chips On Board (COB) LED technology which delivers a more compact footprint and a higher intensity of light. Others on the road will see you coming no matter where they are.

More interestingly, the helmet comes with multiple ways to control the lights. For starters you can use the remote button that attaches to handles. Simply push the button before you turn to indicate your intentions. With the help of the Apple Watch, the gizmo even allows for gesture controls! This means you can control the turn signals on Lumos Ultra by simply raising your arm.

With three large exhausts in the rear, Lumos says this is their most ventilated helmet yet. Plus, it weighs just 370 grams, which is 120 grams less than the original. As far as safety, the thing carries multiple crash certifications including CPSC, EN 1078 and AS/NZS 2063:2008.

Finally, there’s also an accompanying smartphone app. You can use that to track your rides, check battery levels and personalize your helmet with custom blinking patterns.

The first generation helmet was a huge success and this looks like it will be a repeat. The $60,000 Kickstarter goal was achieved in just 4 minutes. The funding is up to $2.2 million now, and that’s with 8 more days to go before the campaign closes.

Assuming all goes according to plan with production, a pledge of $79 will get a helmet delivered to your door in November. There’s a choice between Charcoal Black, Jet White, High-vis Green, Neon Pink Mix and Deep Blue Mix. You’ll also need to decide between Small, Medium to Large and Extra Large.

Garmin’s new Connect Courses API now allows for a direct connection. Strava and Komoot are the first to take advantage of the functionality. This works with any Garmin GPS device that supports .FIT files. This includes Forerunner 245 and above, along with Garmin Fenix and Instinct.

The steps are pretty straightforward. To start off you will need to give Strava (or Komoot) permission to share data with Garmin. This a one time task that needs to be done through the Garmin Connect app. From that point on the software will communicate directly and routes created on other platforms will sync automatically and appear in the ‘Courses’ section of the Garmin navigation menu.

Needless to say, this is a particularly useful function for cyclists and runners. It means they will spend less time mapping and more time exercising!

The news comes just over a month after Strava announced a revamped route building tool with more changes to come. The upgrades include smart features such as personalized route suggestions, info on the ins and outs of routes and more.

To create your own routes on Strava, you will need a paid subscription – called Summit membership. However, those with free access can star a friend’s ride and have it sync over to their Garmin. Komoot also allows certain route planning features free of charge.
