The RingConn and the Whoop 4.0 take very distinct approaches to their form factor. The first, as the name suggests, is a sleek ring, designed to be worn on the finger. It’s surprisingly comfortable, made of durable titanium, and barely noticeable once you get accustomed to it. RingConn comes in nine size options to ensure a perfect fit.

Whoop 4.0, on the other hand, is a one-size-fits-all affair. The thing is a more traditional fitness band that can be worn on the wrist or bicep. I found that, while slightly bulkier, it remains discreet and comfortable for all-day wear.

Neither device has physical buttons, simplicity is the idea here. This contributes to their streamlined and modern appearances – a design element I appreciate.

Since they are fundamentally wellness trackers, neither device has a screen. While I sometimes miss the immediate feedback a screen provides, this design choice aligns with the goal of minimizing distraction and focusing on continuous data collection.

Both the RingConn and Whoop 4.0 are designed with water resistance in mind. The RingConn boasts an IP68 rating, making it suitable for everyday use and even swimming. The Whoop 4.0 also carries an IP68 rating, ensuring it can withstand sweat, rain, and even submersion in water. This water resistance is a feature I particularly value for worry-free wear.

Finally, in terms of color options, the RingConn offers a choice of Moonlit Silver, Midnight Black, and Pale Gold – a classic and elegant selection. Whoop 4.0 is initially available in Black, but the company offers a wide range of interchangeable straps in various colors and materials. Which means you should have no problems adopting the Whoop to your style and mood.

Sensor technology

As far as sensors, the two devices utilise comparable technology. They both incorporate features like an accelerometer, infrared sensors, and sensors for monitoring blood oxygen and skin temperature. This allows for the collection of similar core health metrics.

While the sensors are very similar, the way the data is utilized likely differs. Whoop 4.0 has a greater focus on advanced metrics like heart rate variability and recovery scores, aimed at providing in-depth analysis of health and fitness. RingConn is more an all-rounder.

Neither device offers built-in GPS, so they will need to rely on a connected smartphone for location tracking. The duo also doesn’t have NFC or dedicated music storage capabilities.

Battery life

RingConn advertises a battery life of up to 7 days on a full charge. That’s pretty impressive, and the included charging case allows you to easily top up the battery on the go. After several months, though, I observed a minor decline in battery longevity, but not enough to warrant contacting customer support.

Whoop 4.0, on the other hand, offers advertised battery life of somewhere between 4 and 5 days. In my real-world testing, I found that to be accurate. The upside is that the Whoop 4.0 charges by sliding a battery pack over the device while you wear it, which is convenient. Overall, while the Whoop 4.0 battery life is decent, it doesn’t quite match the RingConn’s potential 7 days.

Sporting largely the same sensors, the duo excels in health and fitness tracking. But they do offer different strengths within this space.

Let’s start with sleep tracking, a crucial pillar of overall health. Both devices analyze sleep stages, quality, and duration, and I found them surprisingly accurate compared to dedicated sleep monitors. The insights they provide helped me identify areas where I could improve my sleep hygiene, which contributed to noticeably better recovery.

Both RingConn and Whoop 4.0 monitor your activities and workouts. While they do this well, I found the RingConn focuses on a more general overview of activity. If you primarily want to track steps and encourage more movement, it serves that purpose adequately. In fact, Whoop doesn’t track steps – it compiles a daily Strain metric which quantifies your effort based on heart rate.

Whoop 4.0 shines when it comes to fitness specifics. It automatically identifies various exercise types and calculates those insightful strain and recovery scores. As a runner, I particularly valued how this helped me understand the effects of workouts on my body and whether I was pushing too hard or not hard enough. The ability to see these trends over time is incredibly helpful for optimizing training and avoiding overexertion.

It also has a useful Journal feature. This allows users to track various daily habits. Over time, Whoop’s analysis has revealed how these choices significantly impact my recovery scores. For example, I noticed that eating late in the evening consistently leads to poorer sleep and a lower recovery score the next day. Similarly, going to bed earlier directly translates to a higher HRV and improved recovery. Armed with these insights, the Whoop Journal has been instrumental in helping me adopt healthier habits for a healthier me.

Overall, RingConn seems to prioritize sleep tracking and basic activity monitoring as its focus. I enjoyed its simplicity and accuracy in those areas. Whoop 4.0, on the other hand, goes beyond those core functionalities and offers a more holistic, data-driven approach to fitness. If you’re serious about workouts and want in-depth analytics to push your limits, Whoop 4.0 likely offers more meaningful insights.

The WHOOP 4.0 hardware is provided without an upfront cost. Yes, you read that correctly – it is free. However, the hardware is useless without a monthly subscription. This allows you to access its full range of features and data analysis. Subscription prices range from $20 to $30 per month, depending on the length of commitment. So the price does add up over time. A one year Whoop subscription pretty much equals the total cost of the RingConn smart ring.
