What Garmin data taught us about 2024

Garmin’s 2024 report has landed, and it’s full of surprises. The Dutch crushed it with the highest energy levels and best sleep scores, while Saturdays turned out to be the most stressful day of the week. Did you manage to keep up with Hong Kong’s average of over 10,000 daily steps? Or maybe you’re just wondering why everyone seemed so exhausted on July 20th.

These numbers tell a story about how we lived, moved, and recovered in 2024. We get one of these reports from Garmin each and every year. Whether you’re tracking steps, monitoring stress, or trying to squeeze in better sleep, there’s something here to compare against. Let’s break it all down.

Body battery reveals global energy patterns

The Body Battery feature, designed to track daily energy levels, provided insights into how Garmin users managed their energy reserves in 2024. Most Garmin devices are capable of tracking this metric. So what did the numbers reveal?

On average, users woke up with their Body Battery at 71, with levels dropping to 22 by bedtime. Tuesdays emerged as the most energetic day of the week, while Saturdays marked the lowest evening energy levels. Perhaps due to Friday night partying…

January 1st marked the lowest Body Battery score, likely a result of New Year’s Eve celebrations. No surprise there. Other energy fluctuations were less predictable: September 10 (a Tuesday) saw the highest daily Body Battery, while August 27 (another Tuesday) recorded peak energy expenditure. The most exhausting day of the year was Saturday, July 20, when Body Battery scores hit their lowest point. No idea why.

Notably, the Netherlands boasted the highest average Body Battery score globally. This means Dutch Garmin users consistently started their days feeling more energized than their counterparts.

Sleep trends highlight the power of rest

Sleep data from 2024 underlined the close link between rest and overall energy. The average sleep score among Garmin users was 71, indicating room for improvement.

Mondays led to the best rest, likely setting up higher energy levels for Tuesdays. Conversely, weekends proved disruptive, with Saturday nights yielding the lowest sleep scores. Users in the Netherlands again topped the charts with the best sleep quality, while Indonesia struggled with the lowest scores.

Stress and training readiness insights

Stress levels, measured through Garmin’s Firstbeat Analytics, revealed intriguing patterns. With an average score of 30—considered low stress —users were relatively calm.

Mondays were surprisingly the least stressful day, while Saturdays saw a slight uptick in stress. Training readiness, which reflects the body’s preparedness for exercise, showed Tuesday as the optimal day for intense workouts. The average readiness score for the year was 60, with April 23 marking the highest collective readiness.

Fitness and movement trends across the globe

Garmin users collectively averaged 8,317 steps per day, with Hong Kong leading at 10,340 and Indonesia falling behind at 5,375. Fitness Age—a feature that compares biological and chronological fitness—revealed that users, on average, were 2.48 years younger than their actual age. Interesting.

Final reflections on 2024

Garmin’s 2024 report is like a snapshot of how we’ve all been getting through the year. From the Dutch dominating energy levels to Hong Kong clocking the most steps, and those brutal Saturday evenings that left everyone drained, it’s all here. Some of it makes sense; some of it doesn’t, but that’s life, right? Here’s to learning from it, tweaking a few things, and seeing what 2025 brings.
