Amazfit T Rex Ultra 2 is official and clearly built for harsher places
The Amazfit T Rex Ultra 2 is now official from Zepp Health, landing with a 51 mm titanium case, sapphire glass, a 1.5 inch AMOLED display rated at 3000 nits and a massive 870 mAh battery. Despite months of speculation, there is no MicroLED panel, which tells you a lot about where this watch is meant to perform.
This launch closes the door on leaks and makes the positioning clear. The Ultra 2 is built as a serious outdoor tool, aimed squarely at long expeditions and harsh environments rather than everyday wear.
A massive build that skips the microled hype
The rumors of a MicroLED screen did not pan out this time. Instead, Zepp Health chose a big 1.5-inch AMOLED display with a 480 by 480 resolution, which works out to about 322 pixels per inch. With a peak brightness of 3000 nits, this screen focuses on visibility, especially in bright sunlight or snowy conditions.
There’s a chunky bezel around the screen that adds to its rugged feel. This look might not be for everyone, but it definitely does its job. Compared to smaller outdoor watches, the Ultra 2 clearly emphasizes readability and packs in a lot of information.
The case is 51 mm, made from a blend of Grade 5 titanium and fiberglass-reinforced polymer. This keeps it strong without going full metal, which helps with the weight. At just under 90 grams, it’s definitely a heavy watch, but Zepp Health seems fine with that trade-off.
The display is protected by sapphire glass, and the classic T Rex shape is still intact. This is a watch built to take a beating, not to fade into the background.
Endurance that supports the mission
Battery life is a major highlight of the Ultra 2. With an 870 mAh cell, you can expect up to 30 days on standard use, plus there’s enough juice for multi-day GPS activities without worrying about running out of power.
For anyone heading out on an expedition, that battery capacity is way more important than just making the watch thinner. It means you can run sensors, GPS, and background tracking without a hitch.
Charging is done through a magnetic base with USB-C. The box comes with the charging puck, but there’s no extra cable included. This fits with Zepp Health’s recent effort to trim down on extra accessories.
Navigation storage and offline maps
Offline mapping is a key part of the Ultra 2 experience. You can download regional color maps using the Zepp Health app and save them directly onto the watch. With about 30 GB of internal storage, there’s plenty of space for large areas and route files.
Global base maps come preloaded, but you’ll need to download more detailed contour maps and ski resort info separately. You can follow and adjust routes right from your wrist, and the watch can even reroute you if you stray off course.
The dual-band GPS with six satellite systems enhances accuracy. It means things like tree cover, cliffs, and deep valleys won’t mess with your signal as much as older single-band designs.
For winter sports, the watch features ski resort maps that include slope layouts and lift info. Along with altitude and pressure data, this makes it perfect for spending extended time in alpine areas without needing to connect to a phone.
All these features highlight that the Ultra 2 is built for adventures far from coverage and comfort.
Survival features for extreme cold and deep water
The Ultra 2 has a water resistance rating of 10 ATM, allowing for recreational diving down to 45 meters. You can track dive metrics directly on the watch, so there’s no need for a separate dive computer for casual use.
It also comes packed with environmental tools like a barometric altimeter, storm alerts, and altitude reminders that link to blood oxygen checks. An ambient light sensor helps adjust brightness automatically based on the conditions.
A built in dual tone flashlight adds genuine utility. The white light is great for general visibility, while the green light helps preserve your night vision. There’s even a higher output mode for when you need extra brightness, plus an SOS flashing mode for safety.
Health training and smart features stay the same
Beneath its tough exterior, the Ultra 2 acts like a complete health and training watch. It tracks heart rate, blood oxygen, skin temperature, stress levels, sleep stages, and heart rate variability, plus it provides insights on training load, VO2 max, and readiness through the Zepp Health app.
There’s a one-tap measurement feature that lets you check several vitals in under a minute, which is super handy when traveling or adjusting to different altitudes.
With 187 sports modes, it also supports syncing with Strava and TrainingPeaks. You can make NFC payments through Zepp Pay, and it has Bluetooth calling thanks to the built-in speaker and microphone.
Another practical tool is the voice memo support during activities, letting you record notes without needing to stop and pull out your phone. That recently rolled out to a few other Amazfit watches.
Our takeaway
At $550 (check price and availability on Zepp Health), the Amazfit T Rex Ultra 2 sits at the upper end of the T Rex range, but the hardware explains the price. This is a large, heavy and uncompromising watch built around battery life, durability and offline capability.
Compared with high end outdoor watches from Garmin or Suunto, it competes on endurance and hardware while still trailing in software polish and navigation refinement. That trade off will make sense for some users and not for others.
The Ultra 2 does not try to disappear on your wrist. It leans fully into its role. If you want a watch built for long days far from civilisation, it fits the brief. If you want something discreet or lightweight, it never will.
The Ultra 2 is basically a slightly stretched T Rex 3 Pro. Most things are the same, but you get a larger case, a bit more battery to play with, more capable maps and additional storage. The case is tougher and heavier thanks to more titanium, which you will notice on the wrist. Aside from that, it is mostly familiar territory, with a few small extras bolted on rather than a big rethink.
