Moona: pad that keeps your pillow cool all night

We’ve all been there. You’ve been tossing and turning in your bed for the past half hour trying in vain to fall asleep.

In addition to food, water and air, sleep is the one thing we can’t live without. Skimping on shut-eye can be detrimental to our health. Sleepless nights are typically a result of overactive stressed out minds and underactive bodies. But there are other reasons as well.

Did you ever wonder why you sometimes flip your pillow to the cool side during the night? Its one of life’s little oddities. This is because there is a link between the quality of sleep and head temperature. Temperature is key to good sleep.

Research has shown that in order to get shut-eye, body temperature needs to come down. Furthermore, cooler temperatures help people stay asleep and improve the quality of kip time. On the flip side, similar to an alarm clock, warmer temperatures trigger a natural wake up.

Moona is a water-based system which brings cooling and heating to your pillow so you sleep better and wake up more easily. Its a relatively simple concept which consists of a number of elements.

First there is the pad which slips into any pillowcase. There are no electronics under the head, just a thin membrane with water and memory foam. It is connected via a tube to a container which resembles a speaker and sits on the bedside.

Throughout the night the water-filled container cools or warms up the pad, as needed. This delivers a cool or warm sensation to your head, making turning the pillow during those summer heatwaves a thing of the past. The sensors and algorithms monitor your sleep, the light level, humidity and room temperature in order to determine the best temperature.

“Moona has been developed to reflect research on temperature and sleep to create a system that uses the power of cooler temperatures to help people get deep, restorative sleep,” said Co-Founder and CEO Coline Juin.

“When we fall asleep, our bodies cool off. By controlling this and making it happen sooner, Moona successfully facilitates sleep.”

There is also an accompanying smartphone app which tracks circadian rhythm and uses the data to enhance sleep cycles. It also allows you to set up a personalized temperature cycle.

The company has now turned to Kickstarter hoping to fund the product. Early bird Moonas can be grabbed from $219, with delivery set for November.
