Anyone with even a passing interest in this topic will have heard of Fitbit, one of the pioneers of the wearable tech market. The king of fitness trackers also has a few smartwatches under its belt. One of these is Versa, a smaller and better looking version of its first smartwatch – the Ionic. Fitbit has obviously learned a thing or two from its acquisition of Pebble.

When it comes to 24/7 activity monitoring the device ticks most boxes. Step count, distance, calories, floors, heart rate – its all there. Plus you get Fitbit’s simple to use app and web dashboard.

The water-resistant gizmo comes with a high-quality 1,000 nit display and Fitbit says its the lightest metal smartwatch sold in the US. You’ll also get Fitbit’s new female health tracking feature, along with on-board storage for music and NFC payments (selected models). There is no built-in GPS though, only connected GPS.

With a battery life of 5 days, this is a stylish device which represents a great compromise between a fully fledged smartwatch and fitness tracker.

Vivoactive 3 is a Swiss knife of activity trackers. But one that has been designed to appeal to both men and women.

Apart from the aesthetics, built-in GPS and tracking everything under the sun, the timepiece also comes with some smartwatch features. One of these is Garmin Pay. The functionality is enabled by FitPay and supports Visa and Mastercard debit and credit cards from major issuing banks. The original version of the device has no built-in storage for music, but if this is important to you there’s always the upgraded Vivoactive 3 Music.

Apple Watch Series 4

the apple watch fall detection might land you in prison - Top smartwatches for women: stylish timepieces built for small wristsIf you’re in the market for the best all-rounder, look no further than the Apple Watch. With each iteration, the device is getting better at tracking your fitness, too.

The Series 4 Watch delivers solid improvements over its predecessor. The screen real estate is larger by 30% on both the 40mm and 44mm version. Other hardware improvements include a revamped digital crown, 50% louder speakers, and a back that is made of black ceramic and sapphire crystal for better cellular reception.

In addition to dishing out more accurate fitness tracking stats, the device can now identify and send out alerts if you fall or trip. Something that will no doubt be of use to the older generation. Series 4 also intermittently analyzes heart rhythms and sends alerts for atrial fibrillation.

And let’s not forget the new FDA-approved ECG sensor. This provides a full report that lets you know if your heart rhythm is normal or there are issues.

Amazfit Bip comes packed with features such as built-in GPS, heart rate sensor and notifications. In addition to keeping tabs on your activity 24/7 the timepiece provides tracking of your runs, cycling and other sports with mapped routes, detailed stats and heart rate zones.

But Bip’s claim to fame is its astonishing 30+ days of battery life, and that’s with an always on colour touch-screen! Choose the ‘minimal notification’ setting and battery life climbs to 45 days.

In terms of looks, this is a cheerful-looking smartwatch. Most would equate it to a blend between Pebble Time and the Apple Watch.

Is it perfect? No. It doesn’t have an altimeter for counting floors climbed and the non-fitness features pretty much end with notification support.

But if you’re after a simple wearable that keeps tabs on your fitness, tracks your running and cycling with GPS and you don’t want to be bothered with charging often, the Bip makes a strong case for itself. You’ll struggle to find a smartwatch that delivers anywhere near the same level of features for the price.

Of the lot, heart rate was perhaps the most glaring omission from the previous generation. There is also the usual array of sensors, including an altimeter, accelerometer, gyroscope, ambient light and microphone. Combined with Google Fit, the Wear OS device now has some serious fitness tracking smarts.

Design improvements mean the timepiece is water-resistant. You can finally hop in the shover, bath or go for a swim without risking your Fossil smartwatch.

The design tweaks mean the watch diameter has shrunk by 2mm to 40mm. There are new minimalist watch dials and two customizable push buttons. These can be programmed to perform tasks such as providing quick access to often used apps.

The biggest design tweak of all, though, is the water-resistant casing. You’ll be able to use Falster 2 come rain or shine and it will track your swim sessions, too.

In addition to tracking your steps, distance, sleep and activity, Skagen’s new smartwatch will keep tabs on your heart rate. There is built-in GPS as well, something those serious about exercising outdoors will appreciate.
