A sensor packed Connected Scarf will soon be made available to fans of Manchester City and other global football clubs. It will be able to track a range of physological indicators.

Next year clubs might go beyond launching the typical new kits, streetwear and training wear. Smart tech is all around us and it will soon be introduced into the fan experience.

Manchester City might be the first out of the box with a scarf capable of measuring heart rate, body temperature and emotional responses. The garment has a sensor from EmotiBit that is stitched into the thing to capture the data.

Currently in pilot testing, the device has been created to measure the highs and lows of the spectator experience. This would make it one of the first wearables to track how fans feel during the game!

It is clear what’s in it for the clubs – they will be more in tune with their supporters. The benefits that fans will get from purchasing the smart scarf are a bit less clear. Hence, the reaction on Twitter has been mixed.

Matchday can be a of emotions for #ManCity fans!

The @Cisco Connected Scarf plans on capturing them all to bring fans closer to the game than ever before

Find out more
— Manchester City (@ManCity) July 27, 2022

The technology has already been trialled in Manchester City’s final games of last season. A total of six City fans were invited to try it out. The scarf captured 120 moments of interest during the matches.

Cisco, which is the official technology partner of Manchester City Football Group, has partnered with Octagon agency to come up with the wearable. You are meant to wear it just like you would any scarf. The biosensor comes in contact with the neck from where it gathers the necessary data.

If things go well with further trials, the Connected Scarf will be made available to Manchester City fans from next season. It will also be introduced to other global clubs.

“For more than 100 years, the scarf has been the ultimate symbol of football fandom,” Manchester City club said in a statement.

“It’s seen the highs and the lows; and captures the blood, sweat and tears of fans, week in and week out.”

“Now, together with our partner Cisco, we are excited to share an innovative upgrade to the scarf that allows us to measure those ups and downs and get a better understanding of the emotion at the heart of the world’s beautiful game.”

Catapult has announced Catapult One. A Fitbit-like device for soccer players – it brings pro-level stats to amateurs.

The company is well known for working with professional athletes and teams for some 15 years now. According to its press release, its equipment is currently utilised by over 3,200 elite teams in 137 countries. These are wearables that help to optimise performance, mitigate injury risk, and quantify return to play protocols.

Essential reading: Training sensors for soccer (aka football) players

Unlike some of its competitors, Catapult has not made its athlete monitoring devices available to amateurs. It was all reserved for professional athletes. But now we have Catapult One – a device meant for the rest of us.

Catapult One – pro-level soccer stats for amateurs

Like some of its other equipment, Catapult One is a pod-like device that slips into a vest. Inside the thing is a 10Hz GPS tracker and a few other sensors. The combination of these provides info helping players track, analyse and improve performance on the pitch.

The stats that you can expect to receive via the app and web based dashboard include sprint distance, acceleration and intensity, with 10-times the amount of data you’d get from a high-end smartwatches. All of these stats are designed to mimic info that is available to pro-level athletes.

Catapult One is designed both for individual and team use. Coaches can utilise the info to make tactical decisions and mitigate player injury risk. Or you can just strap it on and analyse the stats post practice or game in the comfort of your living room.

The novel thing about the device is that it goes beyond soccer. Players of American football, rugby, field hockey, cricket, lacrosse, tennis, and Australian rules football can also benefit from tracking their performance. Presumably, these come with their own set of metrics.

The company says after 3 months of use, players typically see a 26% increase in sprint distance, 25% increase in power output, 11.7% increase in distance covered and 3.5% increase in top speed. These are some pretty impressive stats.

The wearable can be purchased by going to one.catapultsports.com. Unfortunately, this is not a one-off cost. You will need to fork out for a subscription which starts at $15.99 per month on top of a $34.00 kit cost. The $179 annual subscription comes with a free kit so there’s some saving to be achieved by going for that option.

Hublot has launched another addition to its stable of football (soccer for our American readers) watches. This one is a limited edition Premier League piece.

It follows the Big Bang E UEFA Champions League smartwatch that was unveiled for the UEFA tournament last October. That one was a revamped version of the Big Bang E which launched for the last World Cup. The original cost a whopping $5,800 so you really had to be a hardcore football fan to buy it or have deep pockets.

Big Bang e Premier League

The latest watch in the Hublot collection is a revamped version of the Big Bang E. This limited edition piece was created in partnership with the Premier League. The company has been the Official Timekeeper of the competition for a number of years now. In case you were wondering, Hublot is first Swiss watch brand and luxury brand to get involved with football.

The watch comes with the league’s purple colorway and a new dial. This is coupled with a purple fabric strap with velcro. Other extras over the original version include a new football app which will, at a later stage, be made available to existing Hublot Big Band e connected owners.

As before the watch is powered by Wear OS. Football dedicated features include notifications of Premier League kick-off times, alerts for goals, penalties, substitutions yellow and red cards are dished out and more. Other functionality includes pre-match team line-ups and real-time VAR decisions.

Essential reading: Top fitness trackers and health gadgets

Unless you’re a hard-core fan all of this might be information overload. Thankfully, the alerts can be customized from the smartphone app so that you are not overwhelmed with too many notifications.

“In these challenging times, football continues to be a source of much-needed joy for fans all over the world. Hublot loves football and continues to partner with the game’s greatest competitions,” said Ricardo Guadalupe HUBLOT CEO.

“It’s our privilege to introduce the Hublot Big Bang e Premier League, a connected watch designed to bring passionate fans even closer to the world’s most-watched league. Hublot is really proud to be working with the Premier League and to be creating memorable experiences for people who love watches and love football.”

Big Bang e Premier League has a 42mm diameter with satin-finished and polished titanium case. Water resistance is 3 ATM. The watch is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 3100 processor, while battery life is around a day between charges.

Three big name brands have teamed up on new a Jacquard technology product, a pair of connected soccer (football for our European readers) boot insoles – the Adidas GMR.

Essential reading: Top fitness trackers and health gadgets

Project Jacquard, which is made out of Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) group, is all about developing commercial products that utilize touch-sensitive fabrics. The last Jacquard product was released in October 2019. It represented a high-tech take on the brand’s iconic Sherpa and Classic Trucker Jackets.

The apparel uses a Bluetooth connect conductive yarns and electronic tabs in the garments to a mobile device. This allows for some cool functionality such as asking the smartphone for directions, answering calls, controlling music playback and more. A month earlier, Google announced a $1,000 smart rucksack, developed in collaboration with Saint Laurent.

The initial hint of the first 2020 product landed a couple of weeks ago. The soccer arm of Adidas posted a teaser gif on something being developed in collaboration with Google’s ATAP group and EA Sports. The short clip made it clear the product will be “powered by Jacquard technologies.”

We thought perhaps it might be a smart football jersey or jacket, but instead it turned out to be a pair of intelligent football boot insoles. Adidas GMR comes in the form of a tag that has a accelerometer, gyroscope, and microprocessor inside. This allows it to keep tabs on your movements on the pitch, collecting data on ground covered, kicks, ball touch and other control metrics.

All you need to do is slot the tag into the complementary insoles that come with the product. The insoles (sized between U.S. 4 to 13.5) fit into any standard cleats and are meant to be worn on the dominant foot.

The most interesting bit is that the stats will be used by FIFA Mobile soccer and this is where EA Sports comes in. Real-world performance will help you compete in virtual weekly challenges and progress in overall team ranking – “the more you play in real life, the better your FIFA Mobile Ultimate Team becomes.”

The Adidas GMR can be picked up on the company’s website from today for a very reasonable $40. They are available in the US, as well as 24 other countries.

Soccer has been slower to embrace technology as compared to say tennis, golf and some other sports. This is slowly starting to change, however, not just at the amateur but also at the professional level. We first saw the debut of goal line technology at the World Cup in Brazil four years ago. Last year, the Russian tournament saw the inclusion of Video Assistant Referees and an NFC enabled ball.

Essential reading: Wearable technology at FIFA World Cup 2018

This is only the beginning. Sports wearables are a growing field and FIFA is, to this end, looking to establish a global wearables standard. The idea is to have all professional teams using the same data-tracking technologies for training purposes. Eventually, some of this technology could make its way into live matches to help doctors and coaches. It could also open a whole host of possibilities for broadcasting, allowing fans to view in-depth player statistics.

There are a number of products on the market that have already built a good customer base with some of the major clubs and amateurs. This is our round-up of ten devices that are out there right now for amateurs.

Zepp Play Soccer is a small tracking pod which slips inside a calf sleeve that is sold as part of the bundle. The device pairs via Bluetooth to a smartphone app, which uses a soccer-orientated algorithm to convert statistics into performance crunching data. You also get game reports and optional video highlights.

Once you are ready to play, simply pair the sensor with the mobile app and click “Start Game” to begin tracking. After the match, head over to the app to sync the information. You will get detailed stats on distance travelled, number of kicks and kick speed, number of sprints and maximum speed, and total time of game play. Unlike the company’s other sensors, Zepp Play Soccer is not about helping you train with video tutorials or tips from professionals. Instead, you are meant to use the raw data from the sensor to determine what specific skills you need to improve.

The video recording feature provides a nice, separate dimension to the product. Its perfect for parents wanting to preserve memories of their little ones, or for budding professionals to keep highlights of their accomplishments.

The app automatically produces a post-game summary. There is also a Team Game mode, which lets multiple players connect to the same match by entering a code or by enabling their location to discover nearby games. You can then combine data with other teammates and see how you compare.

Adidas miCoach

From the outside the Adidas Smart Ball looks just like a normal soccer ball (size 5 and thermal bonded 32-panel), which is a good thing. The miCoach, however, has a built-in sensor that tells you most things you need to know about your kicks so you can learn to control, strike and manipulate the ball like a pro.

Once you connect the smart ball to your Android or iOS device you’ll get instant feedback on power, spin, strike and trajectory, along with tips and guidance to help you develop on-pitch skills.

For example, when learning how to curve the ball, the app can instruct where and how your foot should strike in order to get the desired result. The trajectory can be mapped out so you can see exactly where the ball has travelled, and this can be zoomed in via a two-finger pinch on the smartphone’s screen and even rotated as a 3D model to get an in-depth look at what’s going on. Or, if its simple training you are after, the measurements are relayed back to the app after each kick.

The great thing about it is that ball feel and reaction is just like a normal soccer ball – you won’t notice any difference. If you’d rather, you can always opt for the official ball of the World Cup 2018. The Adidas Telstar 18 (view on Amazon) is an NFC enabled ball. But this one won’t measure your kicks or passes. Rather its more about the fan experience. The accompanying smartphone app offers different functionalities such as competitions, challenges and Adidas football content.

This intelligent soccer ball comes from two young brothers in Brooklyn. Just like their connected basketball, most of the clever work is done by the accompanying smartphone app rather than the ball itself. The app tracks the ball in real-time using the smartphone camera, analyses thousands of data points and synthesises this into training feedback. Interactive skills and drills include shooting, juggling and ground work.

The virtual trainer provides audio feedback and grades your performance at the end of each drill. No worries if you are just starting out. The app adopts to the player’s skill level making it a useful whether you are a 4 year old just starting out or a well seasoned professional soccer player.

A week ahead of last year’s World Cup, Catapult launched a wearable that helps amateur footballers prepare, perform and recover like the world’s top pros. Like the company’s other device for amateurs, Playertek, the gizmo consists of a SmartPod, SmartVest and the SmartCoach app.

The main difference between PLAYR and Playertek is that the new wearable also offers detailed insights on preparation, performance and recovery. Catapult calls this AI system SmartCoach. It tailors the advice to a soccer player’s age, gender, position, and training schedule, and will even give tips on aspects such as nutrition and sleep.

Catapult hopes to transform the way aspiring footballers understand and improve their performance. To find out more about their newest sports tracking wearable, head over to www.playrsmartcoach.com.

First 11 is different from other devices in this article in that it comes with two sensors, one for each foot. Needless to say, this gives players and coaches more in-depth analysis over their players’ skills and fitness.

The sensors come with different-sized elastic bands/sleeves for better comfort. After the game, the accompanying smartphone app lets players view a range of important data to help improve their training, hone their skills, and find deficiencies. This includes distance, number of kicks per foot, time spent walking/running/sprinting, strength of kicks and movement speed.

No need to worry about battery life. The sensors record data for up to 150 minutes to easily cover an entire game or two.

Hublot is planning to release a sequel to the Big Bang referee smartwatch. Another tie-in with a major football tournament, this one will launch at the Euro Cup in 2020.

Essential reading: Training sensors for soccer (aka football) playres

Hublot’s CEO Ricardo Guadalupe confirmed this in an interview with Fortune India.

“We brought out a smartwatch during the football world cup in Russia in 2018 and will be launching a new smartwatch next year during the Euro Cup,” said the Spaniard who lives in Switzerland.

He added that the company will continue to produce limited quantity editions rather than smartwatches “en masse” like Apple.

Classic Fusion Chronograph ICC Cricket World Cup | Image source: Hublot

Earlier this year Hublot launched the Classic Fusion Chronograph to coincide with the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. This was the official timekeeper for all 48 matches that took place in the UK and Wales between the 30th of May and final on 14th of July.

The Cricket watch was very much along the lines of Hublot’s Big Bang referee which was unveiled in time for the football World Cup in Russia two years ago. Only 2018 pieces were released of the $5,200 device. It runs Wear OS and comes with an assortment of World Cup-themed goodies.

During the tournament this included reminders 15 minutes before the match as well as live scores and info on the number of cards, names of goal-scorers, player substitutions and time left to play. Whenever a goal was scored the device vibrated with the word GOAL prominently displayed across the face. A special non-commercial version of the timepiece was warn by referees during the tournament.

No details have been released yet on the UEFA Euro 2020 watch but we imagine much of the above functionality will make its way to the new device. The 16th UEFA European Championship is set to take place in 12 European countries from 12 June to 12 July 2020.

Hublot’s Euro Cup timepiece might make a nice souvenir for those planning to attend the tournament. But let’s hope the next edition of the watch is priced “en masse”.

DashTag has unveiled the first soccer tracking platform for your Apple Watch. The device on your wrist will track movement, the free app will package this info into visual and straightforward stats. It is all coming this Fall.

Essential reading: Training sensors for soccer (aka football) players

Soccer has been slower to embrace technology as compared to some other sports. This has changed, though, and now both professionals and amateurs have a healthy selection of devices to track all aspects of their game. However, most of these options involve buying a separate piece of kit.

DashTag is the first to offer a solution that uses data from your existing wearable. The platform has been in public beta since late last year, with about 250 monthly users.

The software does its thing by turning info churned out by the Apple Watch into an overview of your performance on the pitch. Along with its own algorithms, the app harnesses Apple’s augmented reality platform (ARKit) to come up with simple and easy to understand analytics.

Users will have access to stats such as playing time, steps, distance covered, acceleration, number of sprints, stamina and more. This is in addition to insights into their workload, intensity levels and endurance.

In order to make it more attractive to teenagers, the startup has decided to use a formula that approximates what the soccer video game by EA Sports uses to determine pace and acceleration. This is perhaps the most novel aspect of the platform.

“When we ask [youth players] what is your speed, they had no clue in terms of miles an hour, let alone your acceleration—miles an hour squared,” DashTag CEO Epco Berger told SportTechie.

“But if we ask them what is the pace of Cristiano Ronaldo in the game, they all knew it’s 92 [referring to Ronaldo’s FIFA 17 rating].”

Players will get their personal FIFA card and detailed highlights of the session. What’s more, they’ll be able to see how they stack up with their soccer idols.

For example a user will be able to record a video of a sprint and see it digitally rendered with Lionel Messi or Christiano Ronaldo added to the replay. They’ll actually see themselves running against their hero as an AR depiction.

DashTag was incorporated in 2015. Up to now the startup’s main offering was a simple and affordable, small clip-on device that collects player data from the field.

Once it launches this Fall, this new product will make performance data accessible to more players. It does not require any additional hardware, presuming you already own an Apple Watch. The company says it plans to widen the offering to include compatibility with other smartwatches in the future.

“Our mission is that we want to provide every single athlete the chance and guidance of setting their goals and tracking their performance against that goal, so we want to reach everyone,” Berger added.

“We want to reduce barriers.”

The app will be available for free. You’ll also have the option of a $1.99 premium subscription that adds personalised coaching insights.

La Liga’s Real Sociedad has teamed up with SOLOS on a digital scarf. The garment is designed to reward loyal fans with perks and discounts for buying authentic merchandise.

Essential reading: Training sensors for soccer (aka football) players

Many football clubs are faced with a problem of knock off, copy-cat merchandise that is sold cheaply in front of stadiums. The Basque club may have found a novel way to deal with this nuisance.

As part of their stadium redevelopment, they are trialing what they refer to as smart guernsey technology. This essentially consists of an electronic tag that is embedded in a traditional football scarf via SOLOS Smart Wearable technology. The garment is priced at 20 Euros, which is five times more than the non-digital version.

The idea is to more than make up for difference in price by savings fans can achieve on exclusive offers and rewards such as food and drink vouchers. The scarf is also designed to enhance the match experience by linking up with a smartphone app to provide access to exclusive videos and content, and chances to win prizes.

“This is an opportunity for us to create the best possible experience for our fans, rewarding them for their loyalty to the club and to transform Anoeta into a world-leading smart stadium,” said Real Sociedad head of digital Juan Iraola.

“Athletic Bilbao have just built a new stadium as well so there’s a lot of investment around and because of this the club has to think about new ways to make revenue. The technology can activate quite fast but we have to upgrade the stadium at the same time and those things take a bit longer.

Plans are afoot to expand on this functionality. Once Sociedad’s Anoeta Stadium redevelopment is complete, the intelligent scarf will allow fans to enter the ground completely ticketless. It will also be used as a contactless payment tool.

At the moment 500 scarves are being trialled, with more to be rolled out in the near future. The official launch is timed for the start of next season.

STATSports have announced a deal which will see their technology used by the Australian national soccer team, the Socceroos.

Essential reading: Training sensors for soccer (aka football) players

GPS devices for player performance tracking have become an important part of professional football. The deal with the Socceroos follows similar STATSports linkups in 2018 with US Soccer, the Chinese Football Association and the Brazilian Football Confederation. Its Apex devices are also used by teams across the English Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, MLS, NFL, NBA, Rugby Union and International hockey.

Worn in a vest, the STATSports Apex system tracks each player’s performance and provides real-time feedback to coaching staff and players. This includes info on distance, speed, acceleration, deceleration, high-speed running, heart rate and more.

Such data can be utilized to make sure each player is in his or her peak condition on match-days. Even more importantly, the gizmo provides insights on player load and level of fatigue. Both of these are important indicators that can help when it comes to avoiding player injuries.

“Our partnership with STATSports is hugely exciting and will help mould a successful future for the Socceroos and Matildas,” A spokesperson for Football Federation Australia said.

“By switching to their APEX system, we make use of the most accurate GPS tracking technology available and will be able to hone our performance to achieve the best possible results. That STATSports are now on the ground in Australia is a big help and means we have the benefit of their excellent client support.”

The Northern Irish company which was founded in 2007 has recently made its technology available to the masses. The STATSports APEX Athlete Series retails for €279.99. It’s available for purchase worldwide at www.statsports.com.

“This latest deal with the Socceroos is a landmark for STATSports in Australia and rubber stamps the accuracy and quality of our technology,” Sean O’Connor, co-founder and Chief Commercial Officer at STATSports said.

“The Socceroos rely on their ability to track, monitor and analyse their players during matches and in training and our system will do just that, using the most accurate performance monitoring technology available”.

Catapult has landed a multi-year deal to supply over 100 athlete monitoring devices to FIFA World Champions France.

Essential reading: Training sensors for soccer (aka football players)

As part of the agreement Catapult products will be used by teams that the French Football Federation (FFF) is responsible for. This includes the senior men’s and women’s teams, as well as ‘B’ teams and age-group squads.

“We’re very excited to be working with the FFF and look forward to supporting their sports science and performance initiatives over the coming years,” added Joe Powell, CEO of Catapult.

“The FFF are an organisation that continually demonstrate an impressive commitment to performance innovation, something that has been further underlined by the success of their teams on the field.”

Sports wearables are a growing field and more and teams around the world are recognising this. The FFF has been gradually implementing Catapult technology, with the senior men’s team using the devices both in the build-up to and during their successful 2018 FIFA World Cup campaign.

This latest agreement will see also Catapult technology used at the new Clairefontaine Performance Centre when it opens in 2020. The FFF has twelve elite academies located in and around France that specialize in training football players.

“We are delighted to be able to work with Catapult as a member of the FFF Performance Centre,” said Pauline Gamerre, Director of Business Development at FFF in a statement.

“Catapult’s experience and the effectiveness of their solutions make them a leader in their field and we are looking forward to working together to put the best technologies and cutting-edge sports science at the heart of the Performance Centre.”

The Catapult range includes a number of different models. This includes the OptimEye X4, G5 and S5, HPU and PlayerTek devices. The wearables help optimise performance, mitigate injury risk, and quantify return to play protocols. The press release did not mention which of these products will be used by the French teams.
