Technology enthusiasts, programmers, and Apple aficionados mark their calendars for a very special date every year as the summer season gets underway. It’s not a national or international holiday, but for those who are deeply engrossed in the Apple universe, it might as well be. The WWDC is Apple’s yearly showcase, where technological prowess, innovation, and creativity take centre stage.

But what is WWDC exactly, and why is it so important? The conference, which was first held in 1983, serves as a hub for Apple’s sizable developer and innovator community. Apple presents its most recent hardware and software updates here. It also gives a preview of what its ecosystem will look like in the future. Numerous ground-breaking announcements have been made at WWDC over the years. This includes the introduction of new iOS versions, macOS upgrades, and of course, watchOS releases.

Wearable technology has undergone a revolution since the 2015 release of the Apple Watch. It now puts a wealth of data and functionality right on our wrists. Every new version of watchOS has brought significant improvements to performance, new health features, and personalization options.

Because of this, the launch of watchOS 10 is more than just a software upgrade; it’s a new chapter in a tale of ongoing innovation. What exactly has changed this year, then? Here is a summary.

iOS 17: Bringing health to the iPad

One of the most anticipated features unveiled at WWDC 2023 was the introduction of the Apple Health app to the iPad. This move has been long-awaited by Apple users, marking a significant step forward in Apple’s health-oriented ecosystem. The larger screen format of the iPad provides a much more conducive environment for sifting through health data. It offers a broader and more detailed view of information that was previously confined to the iPhone. The release of the Health app on the iPad is a clear response to user requests.

But the Health app is not the only health-centric feature coming to the iPad. Apple HealthKit, the powerful platform that enables developers to build health and fitness apps, is also making its debut on the iPad. HealthKit provides a secure repository for health and fitness data, facilitating the exchange of information between apps and devices. With HealthKit, developers can create innovative applications that tap into the rich data available within the Health app. It allows them to create new possibilities for health and wellness management on the iPad.

A smarter way to navigate

Apple’s watchOS 10 introduces new ways to navigate and quickly access content. Users can now turn the Digital Crown on any watch face to reveal widgets in a smart stack. They display relevant information when you need it most. Long pressing allows the addition of a widget to the smart stack. The smart stack even includes a widget that holds your favorite complications, adding another layer of customization to the Apple Watch experience.

Redesigning apps for better accessibility

WatchOS 10 also ushers in a redesign of existing apps. The World Clock app now features dynamic background color coding, making it more visually appealing and easier to interpret. The Activity app has been enhanced with corner icons that serve as shortcuts to various functions. Plus, rotating the Digital Crown now reveals new full-screen views of certain data, offering a more immersive and detailed view of your health and fitness stats.

New watch faces for a personal touch

To celebrate watchOS 10, Apple has introduced two new watch faces. One is called Palette and its colours shift with time. The other one features the beloved characters Snoopy and Woodstock. These new additions offer more options for personalizing your Apple Watch, allowing you to express your personality right on your wrist.

Cycling and hiking improvements

For cycling enthusiasts, watchOS 10 brings several noteworthy enhancements. The Apple Watch can now connect to Bluetooth-enabled bike sensors, providing a new cycling workout view, a Functional Threshold Power (FTP) feature, and power zones. Plus, cycling workouts on the Apple Watch can now be displayed as a live activity on the iPhone, perfect for riders who rest their iPhone on the handlebars. This offers a convenient way to view workout stats on a larger screen while on the move.

Hiking also gets a boost with new features. The compass can now generate two waypoints – one indicating the last place you had a cellular connection. A new elevation view using the altimeter offers a 3D view of your waypoints. Additionally, a new topographic map with detailed information reveals trails and information about them, enhancing the hiking experience.

New Workout APIs: power to the developers

watchOS 10 extends new Workout APIs to developers, providing them access to high-frequency motion data. This will enable the development of more sophisticated and accurate apps, particularly useful for sports like golf or tennis where tracking and analyzing precise movements can improve performance and technique.

Moving into new health areas: mental and vision health

In a significant step towards comprehensive health management, watchOS 10 is branching out into two new health areas: mental health and vision health.

The introduction of a mindfulness app signifies Apple’s commitment to mental health. Users can log their state of mind, identify what’s causing them to feel a certain way, and analyze how their lifestyle affects their mental state. The app also allows users to take standardized assessments often used in clinics to understand their risk for conditions like depression.

On the vision health front, watchOS 10 is tackling the global issue of myopia or nearsightedness, which affects approximately 30% of the population. The new app feature measures time spent in daylight, encouraging behaviours that can potentially lower the risk of myopia. It also detects if a user is holding their device too close, prompting a warning to adjust their viewing distance.

Privacy: a fundamental commitment

At the heart of all these features and updates is a core commitment to user privacy. Data related to mental and vision health is encrypted, ensuring that only the user has access to this sensitive information. It’s a testament to Apple’s longstanding dedication to privacy, giving users control over their data and peace of mind in their journey towards better health and wellness.

As we unpack the full potential of iOS 17 and watchOS 10, it’s clear that Apple’s vision for the future is centered around personalized, comprehensive health management. With new features and improvements that cater to a wide range of user needs and interests, Apple continues to redefine the boundaries of what’s possible in the world of technology.
